At the risk of piling on…
I called Paul at Stalwart last week thinking I needed to have my water heater replaced. He came out to take a look and immediately figured out that the problem lied elsewhere and said a new tank was not necessary. Had I called anyplace else they would have sent a crew and swapped out the tank without checking to see if it was truly necessary. Talk about professionalism and integrity – if I ever have another plumbing need there is no question who I will call.

AnonymousInactiveI would suggest going to the School fair at SSC, as well as making a persoal visit to the schools you are interested in and maybe take your children there. When it was time to enroll our daughter in kindergarten I just called the school spoke with the principals and made some visits with my daughter with me. Sine she was the one that would be attending one of these schools it was important that she feel comfortable and familiar with the school. We were able to observe afew different classrooms at different school, meet the principal, office staff and the teachers. It made going to school on that first day less nerve racking for our child.
Right now I believe we still have reference schools, meaning you have priority to our neighborhood, but going out of your reference area you might not always find room for your children. Our daughters class at Roxhill has just 18 students and I hear from a friend who’s child attend LaFayette there are 30 kids in her sons class!!

DJSonstengMemberHey everyone,
I am EMT in the local Seattle/King County area so I thought I might be able to help you all out since I spend a lot of time at the local hospitals.
Highline- 16251 Sylvester Rd S- This is the main campus and the ER entrance is located just south of SW 160th St on 8th Ave SW. This is their main ER, the ER at 128th and Military Rd (Riverton Campus) is more of an urgent care. If you go to the Riverton Campus and your symptoms are more severe than they can handle, you are in active labor, or they need to admit you. They will trasfer you to the main campus by ambulance, which is aprox an $800 ride.
Harborview Medical Center- 325 9th Ave- Harborview is the only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. They are ALWAYS busy and always packed. Harborview’s Centers of Emphasis for neurosciences, trauma, burns, reconstruction and rehabilitation, mentally ill and medically vulnerable, and AIDS/STD treatment provide leading edge teaching, research, and clinical care for all patients. They are also the only county hospital. Harborview gets the majority of the Airlifts from outside of seattle due to their level 1 rating. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine
Swedish First Hill-747 Broadway- The ER here is located on the West side of the building. They are fairly busy on a regular basis. They don’t really handle major Trauma.
This is what else is located at first hill:
Swedish Cancer Institute
Swedish Orthopedic Institute
Emergency Room
Emergency Room for Children
Eye Center
Health Education Classes
Joslin Diabetes Center
Medical Imaging Services
Pediatric Specialties
Primary Care
Surgical Services
Women’s Health & Childbirth Services
Swedish Cherry Hill-500-17th Avenue- The ER is located on the west side of the building.
This is whats offered at Cherry Hill:
The Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute
The Swedish Neuroscience Institute
Behavioral Health
Breast Center
Emergency Room
Executive Health Center
Orthopedics
Primary Care
Surgical Services
Rehabilitation
Wound Healing Center
Virgina Mason Medical Center- 1100 9th ave- The ERis located on the south side of the building. This ER is on the smaller side, but they are building a new one in the next few years.
UW Medical center-1959 NE Pacific -Among the top dozen medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report 2007 “America’s Best Hospitals. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine. This is quite a ways from West Seattle espically during rush hour.
Childrens Hospital-4800 Sand Point Way NE- Pretty much self explanitory. Most kids with trauma type injurys will go to Harborview if transported by ambulance or medics.
Valley Medical-400 South 43rd Street- South King county trauma center. Valley is a level III trauma center. They handle anything. This is a ways from West Seattle as well.
All the other hospitals in King County are a fair distance from West Seattle. The exception of is West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital @ 2600 SW Holden St. West Seattle Psych has the capacity to serve individuals who voluntarily seek psychiatric inpatient services. Case management, counseling, crisis stabilization services, group services, vocational services, domestic violence treatment, expanding community services program and child/adolescent psychiatry are other main services provided by the hospital.
I hope this information helps.

WesMemberErik, that’s funny. I always think of that old Almost Live! skit with all the white men taking off their shirts and blinding everyone. They used a mirror to exxagerate the relection in peoples eyes. Hilarious! Tanning too much is bad though to. I was in Sarasota, Florida last year and the amount of elderly people with very brown, wrinkly skin was unbelievable. It was really disturbing and tanning taken too far. It really does harm the skin.

AnonymousInactiveHi WSMOM!!!
I try so hard to help our daughter have different experiences, she is an only child and there are no children in our neighborhood which makes it worse!!! We have always been open to having her friends over to the house, that is if she can find some friends and maybe someday have a sleepover at our house. Our daughter luckily is very outgoing and very friendly and does not seem to have a hard time making friends at school it is just after school everyone disappears and she has us and her cat as playmates. Rarely are other parents at the school so I can’t even get to know the other parents!
I have always had her in at least 1 activity twice a week to be around other kids.
I will give the Girl Scout idea a try and see what they say and if there is room for her to join.
I have since written the school principal and also asked her to give my suggestion to the schools PTA so we wil see if anything comes of this!
January 14, 2008 at 6:04 pm #613888In reply to: Swimming Pool Etiquette
SAMemberAs a new swimmer can you tell me how the slow/medium/fast lanes are supposed to be orientated? Is lane 1 the fastest, lane the lane farthest right or determined by the individual pool? I swim at Mercer Island and WS Allstar and I haven’t see anything posted. Also, what happens at a place like WS Allstar where there are always a minimum of three lanes open for lap swimming but switch to all lanes of lap swimming at a specified time… are people supposed to re-seed themselves and switch lanes?
January 14, 2008 at 5:19 pm #613869In reply to: Class directory
AnonymousInactiveNo, unfortunately there is no class directory at Roxhill Elementary. It is heartbreaking that our daughter had to forgo a birthday party just because no one even bothered to RSVP. What more could I have done, I went to the school and handed out in person the invites, I went again to deliver cupcakes and both times I told the kids that if they wanted to come to the party we need to receive a call from an adult so we know how much food, etc… to bring.
I guess I an old fashion but I was always brought up to call or tell someone in person if I planned or not to go to a party.
As my husband told me it was not my place to contact people even if we had an email address or phone number, that would be tacky. If for some reason not everyone had transporation we would have helped them out.
We still would like to throw a party for our daughter but how do we when people don’t RSVP????
January 14, 2008 at 2:26 am #613844acemotelParticipanthe said: “I always vote anyway…”, and the point is that the possibility of vote fraud should always be in the forefront. The great thing about this country is that <i>everyone</i> has the right – and freedom – to criticize, voter or not. :-)
January 13, 2008 at 6:04 am #613840flipjackParticipantThe whole “running for election thing” seems to be just a HUGE waste of time and money. Nothing more than a really long spectator sport. Or another MAJOR distraction from what is really going on in this country and the world.
I always vote anyway, but I truly do not trust the system as it stands at all.
January 12, 2008 at 7:31 pm #613814In reply to: WS Bridge Tips…anyone?
MissKMemberYou could always drive underneath the bridge? I think along Spokane? Or you could get on 99 and get off on the Seneca exit? Depends what time you leave your house. If its between 8am-9am you pretty much have to suffer the commute. The cops are really rude and yes the woman motorcycle cop is a royal pain. She has riden along side my car and motioned for me to slow down. WHAT!! I was going the speed limit. I think she just is taking he power she has too far. By any means STAY OUT OF THE BUSLANES!! Unless you want to put up with the coppers.
Good Luck on the commute.

KenParticipanthehe. I got a quote from WS radiator of nearly 500.00
Courtesy tire came in at about 350.
I decided to replace it myself and figured if it would take a real mechanic half a day that I could do it in two.
parts Cost 160.00 + tax for the extra cooling version and I only skinned one knuckle.
I did however find out that a mixture of coolant and transmission fluid makes a Rod Stewart hair gel of great strength.
Here I was assuming standard html 1 did not work. Lets test some stuff.

January 11, 2008 at 11:56 am #613795KenParticipantYou think I despise charlatans and hypocrites because I have never been exposed to the “gospel”? I am from North Carolina. I have seen it close up and know a few of the children of major fundies. I have been a cast member in a traveling evangelical show. I have lived in Christian fundamentalist communes and compounds.
I have no problem with the gospel, my issue is with those who read it, and ignore the words of Jesus to concentrate on those parts of the old testament which reinforce their own prejudices, and justify their hatred and averice.
Throuout history there have been those who use religion for personal gain, political power or as a cover for their mental health issues. There have also been good and decent people who derive great comfort and strength from their belief.
It is when the former use the latter for personal gain that I get upset.
I see above a sweetened up standarization of Calvinism with the parts that scare people glossed over or removed. Lets look at the thing in a bit brighter light.
“The doctrines of Jesus are simple, and tend all to the happiness of man. But compare with these the demoralizing dogmas of Calvin.
1. That there are three Gods.
2. That good works, or the love of our neighbor, is nothing.
3. That faith is every thing, and the more incomprehensible the proposition, the more merit the faith.
4. That reason in religion is of unlawful use.
5. That God, from the beginning, elected certain individuals to be saved, and certain others to be damned; and that no crimes of the former can damn them; no virtues of the latter save.”
— Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Waterhouse, Jun. 26, 1822
And in response to Dave Barry, lets try Garrison Keillor
You might not have always liked Republicans, but you could count on them to manage the bank. They might be lousy tippers, act snooty, talk through their noses, wear spats and splash mud on you as they race their Pierce-Arrows through the village, but you knew they could do the math. To see them produce a ninny and then follow him loyally into the swamp for five years is disconcerting, like seeing the Rolling Stones take up lite jazz. […]
It is painful to look at your father and realize the old man should not be allowed to manage his own money anymore. This is the discovery the country has made about the party in power. They are inept. The checkbook needs to be taken away. They will rant, they will screech, they will wave their canes at you and call you all sorts of names, but you have to do what you have to do.

JanSParticipantWes…absolutely…there is always the chance that a belief/feeling will influence their decisions. This particular belief/feeling…the separation of church and state…is kind of important.
Even we will use our personal feelings/beliefs to make this momentous decision.
“It’s interesting that what I was taught about those that were coming to America to settle, were those that were being oppressed by religion in their countries. They wanted to worship freely.” Absolutely on that one, too, Wes…freedom from religious persecution….I suppose that’s why I have a difficult time with people who want to cram their religion down my throat. I even had the woman who stood up for me at my wedding tell me that if I didn’t believe as she did (her version of being “born again”) that I was going straight to hell. She sat in my living room with a straight face and told me that…I showed her the door, and never invited her back again.
So… a little insight into where I’m coming from, I suppose…
We just need to read, read, read some more…and make the best decision that’s right for us based on our beliefs….
Wes, you almost sound like you’re mellowing a bit :)

WesMemberKayleigh, (I really like that name by the way) what date does science give about the age of the Earth today anyways? I think it just got bumped up last month to almost 1 billion. It seems that both have no clue how old the earth is.
Good stuff Ken, but as always I have to take this with a grain of salt, considering daily kos does have it’s own biases about how they think things should be too. But I would agree, what does our military have to do with evangelism?
Also the other article by the kos points out particulars about this very weird house resolution, and says, “It’s a lie.” Ok, show how this is a lie. In all fairness for me to find something you have written and then write in response, “It’s a lie.” would not be just. If it’s true let’s see it. Just because they say it doesn’t make it true, and that goes the same with those pushing for the bill. It still doesn’t seem like theocracy, which I would again assert has nothing to do with the New Testament or Jesus in any way.
As far as Rushdooney’s quote, and I have no idea who he is, what was the context for that statement?
Gary North’s comments are not at all correct biblically and is quite laughable.
It’s interesting that what I was taught about those that were coming to America to settle, were those that were being oppressed by religion in their countries. They wanted to worship freely.
Jan, would it be fair to say that every canidate, despite what they say, will make decisions based of their own presuppositions and beliefs that will affect us daily?
In the end I am still undecided, just like last time.
Good times neighbors!

KenParticipantJust a note on an option.
I always have a computer with a tv card connected so I can watch tv in a window and capture bits I want to save or record entire shows for later. My DVR also does this but I also connect the output from my telescope and video camera to record digital video for later viewing or editing.

JayDeeParticipantWhile there is always that “dead zone” between the top of the hill and the bottom (right around “Alki Mail and Dispatch”), I have found Verizon to have the best customer service, and the best coverage in general. From my understanding Clearwire is only an Internet provider of slower-than-DSL speeds (Clearwire is a tad coy about actual upload speeds…)
I do not know about your area–I’d quiz your neighbors if you are looking into it. There was/is an odd dead spot in Verizon coverage in the Alaska Junction if you hang there.
While this sounds lukewarm, I’ve gotten better customer service from Verizon wireless than any comparable utility.
cjboffoliParticipantI just had Paul Lewan from Stalwart Plumbing out yesterday to change out some fixtures for me in my new house. I have to echo the other recommendations here about him. He was a great guy. Pleasant, smart, efficient and reasonably priced. I’m already planning to have him do some more work for me.

credmondParticipantIt’s funny, in the Wiki entry for Pennsylvania, they mention Tastykake as being one of the local food traditions – previously citing Pennsylvania as the capital of the snack food world. Yum, I think I can even remember one of their radio jingles. I’d said caramel earlier, obviously I meant to say butterscotch. That’s probably also the only butterscotch item I ever liked – hate the stuff, otherwise. I always thought they put something in the recipe so that it would become addicting. Also, apparently Philadelphia is the heart of the American food flavor and scent industry. Knew someone who worked there and they were always inventing new compounds which totally tasted or smelled like – a Jones Soda. Wonder who does the chemistry work for Jones.

On another note Ola salon, I tried 3 times and was not pleased with the results.

westwoodMemberThe Little League fields are near Alki, the Pee Wee fields are in Highland Park. So if you live in Admiral or Alki, Little League is probably your better bet. If you live in the south end of WS, Pee Wee will be easier. Your son will be playing T-Ball at 5, so you can always switch later if you wish. My son loved Pee Wee. They play T-Ball, then two years of B ball, then two of A ball, then Bronco at Lincoln Park. Each level changes the rules. Coaches pitch most of the time in B-ball.
Good luck.

WSBKeymasterWell, just to tamp the cynicism a tiny bit: As we posted here in finally belatedly introducing ourselves last month, I worked in “conventional media” for many years, including 14-plus years as a manager in TV news departments here in Seattle. The political coverage was always “my thing” because few people in the newsroom really took the time to pay attention to it, get passionate about it, learn about the people and the issues, much more a case of negligence than deliberate malfeasance. But — and this is part of the reason why I have left that business — it’s true, it doesn’t get much coverage any more till the last minute, hard to squeeze it in between the latest bursts of mayhem coverage, which is where most local tv news is hanging most of its hats right now. But thank heavens for this here medium that we are all using for communication right this moment … it makes it possible to learn as much as you want to know, provided it’s not too tough to find. Which is part of our mission here in this small corner of the Internet: make the hyperlocally relevant info easy to find. Going to add an election page before long. — TR @ WSB

acemotelParticipantPeewee worked very well for my boys. I was disappointed that they had to go through “tryouts” at some point, I think it was when they were about 10 or 11. They all made it through the tryouts, but I thought it was a bit brutal for the little ones. All the various coaches were there watching them catch and field and hit balls, and then the coaches would pick the kids they wanted for their teams. I don’t know how it works with little league, but I’ve always heard that they are far less competitive, maybe more easygoing. (but I’m not sure?)
AnonymousInactiveWhen I was looking for something unique I went to every nursery in the greater Seattle area. The choices were slim and not that healthy looking. A friend sent me to Bamboo Gardens of Washington. It’s between Redmond and Fall City, but if you have an afternoon, it is so worth the drive. They have a complete forest almost, of full grown (some are 30+ feet) bamboo. You really get a feel for what they will become. I thought I was looking for black, like everyone always is. But when I saw all the choices, many were much more attractive. Look at their website and you’ll see what I mean. Everything from shrub to timber varieties.
