We went last night, my two kids and I. We shared a combination pho, egg roll, shrimp salad roll, and coconut juice. Everything was delectable. We had more food (or is that phood?) than we could eat. Unbelievable depth to the broth. It was full of warm, complex flavors. We loved the various meats, except the tripe, which wasn’t to our taste. The mint and crunchy bits in the salad roll raised it above the usual salad roll.

Oh, and I always overtip when it’s me and the kids, as they take up as much space as grownups but eat far less. Even with an over 20 percent tip, it was still $20. And leftovers for the hubby tonight. He ooooohed and aaaahed over the pho.

The folks who work there are friendly, solicitous, and unintrusive. They are quick to accomodate any request and go above and beyond what I’d expect. When we ordered the coconut juice, I explained that the kids wanted to share it, so she brought it in two glasses. Fortunately for me, the kids didn’t want to eat the slices of young coconut in the sweetened coconut water. Delectable. Again.

I have a feeling that this place will become our refuge this winter when it’s cold and we haven’t time to fix dinner.

We are a business that provides quality resale clothing, shoes, and accessories for men, women, plus women, and children. We also have local art and beautiful handmade jewelry. Most of our prices are $15 and under.

Hi Nat – Gatewood has a small care facility within the building called “Cottage” – I think that is short for something but anyways … they offer before and after school care. I think for after school care its something like $265 a month. Both my girls went to Gatewood and we would always see the kids going to cottage and it looked like they loved it.

If that doesn’t work for you – I own a small in home daycare less than a mile away from Gatewood (on the school bus line – it drops off in front of my home) and although I generally do ages 2-5 I would be happy to watch your child until you could find a long term, good-fit for your needs.

    Good Luck !

I was walking across the bridge this morning and noticed the backs of a sign or signs but didn’t stop to check the message. Personally I always thought the signs on the ped bridge gave some life and character to an otherwise somewhat dreary entrance to West seattle. Now all we have are the signs threatening you with a fine for hanging signs (?!) and, of course, the Smile You’re On Camera signs. I still haven’t managed to locate something that looks like a surveillance unit anywhere near there, unless it’s a blockwatch thing and someone has cams in their house. At least they’re somewhat taking care of the blackberry infestation on the sidewalk on the east side of the bridge!

I was SO happy to see that someone hung a sign yesterday AND today from the little walkway over the bridge. How I miss the days of signs always hanging there. It was such a great welcome to our wonderful community. I loved to see who was married, had a baby, was coming home from the military… Why this stopped I have no idea. IMO it added to our great little neighborhood. My husband finally hung one for my on my 30th birthday and I was so excited. I hope it continues.

I’m with you jwws on the water bill! I always wonder why they can’t alternate billing, instead of getting both water and electric bill every other month. Would be a little easier on the budget!

Is protesting a ticket a civil right?

Actually, it does appear to be a civil right, under the “due process” clause of the Fifth Amendment:

No person shall be deprived of . . . life, liberty, or property [i.e., their cash, as a result of a fine or other penalty] without due process of law.

Applicable to all cases, great and small.

I’ve never contested a ticket, but I always thought you could do that at no cost to yourself, even if you lost the appeal.

Something smells fishy about this $3.00 fee, nicoleg. Please let us know what you find out.

well, two months later and I’m happy to say: Red Star has this Gatewood-West Seattle resident as a loyal customer and hopefully for a long time too. So nice to have quality, value and great personable service so close to home. Being in the foodservice business myself, Red Star is very, very good. Pizzas yes but their meatball & other subs are delicious and filling. Salads fresh, dressings chilled properly and good price points too. I always call in my orders and like clockwork, its ready when I arrive per the time quoted.

thank you, thank you Red Star Pizza…Mark in Gatewood

Does anyone know of a place that has drop off child care in West Seattle? There is Whirlwinds in NE Seattle but I was hoping for somewhere closer so I can go run errands. Thanks.

I just took a cobbler out of the oven made from locally picked berries. Smells sooo good.

I walked around the neighborhood looking for vines overgrowing onto the sidewalk, and checked in dead end alleys below embankments. Also check public staircases. Blackberry bushes always seem to be overgrowing those.

The spiders seem to be doing quite well this year, especially those that spin webs on blackberry bushes.

    JoB,

Its always been like that. 30% (more or less) go right, no matter what, the same number go left. Its the 40% in the middle that always make the difference. I used to be part of the former, until the religious right took ownership and I saw the light!

Pho Thu Thuy at 9627 15th St SW is my personal favorite.

It’s not the cleanest place I’ve ever been in, and the decor is pretty drab. However, the pho is consistently good. The stock is just right (not too salty, not too thin) and there’s always plenty of meat, cooked to perfection. Bean sprouts and other condiments are always fresh, like they’d just been delivered from the farm.

It’s better than any of the pho I ever got in ‘Nam, and that’s saying something. (Had better in Cambodia, but it’s not quite the same thing.)

I can’t speak to any of their other dishes, because I’ve never tried them. But the pho is outstanding and the portions are generous. A small beef combo is a meal, and then some.

We used Bob Sweeney with AAA water heaters. He’s actually from the eastside, but came recommended from Paul at Stalwart Plumbing. We had it all scheduled with Paul to replace our water heater at the same time as a replumb, but of course the heater went two weeks early. Paul couldn’t reschedule so he recommended Bob. He was amazing! Came on the Sunday over Tgiving weekend, didn’t charge for holiday or Sunday hours. Our old one was about 20 years old so the job was much more complicated than expected. He worked at least 4 hours on the job and only charged us for 2 at regular rate. Total for a 50 gal tank w/ 2 extra hrs work, w/ 6 year warranty was $820 (including tax). Felt really good about the entire deal and process. I have a couple numbers and not sure if it’s his business or he just works for them. I had the impression it was his business. Either way…Eastside 425.455.0895 (he was from Bellevue I think) and Seattle 206.417.9523. He grew up in West Seattle and I think his parents still live here. Maybe his brother too.

    Good luck!

We just had a very strange, and persistent, door to door solicitor — well dressed (he pointed that out to me.) When I said, I don’t respond to door to door sales people he said, “I’m used to rejection — what would you do to help me?”

As always, I watched him disappear down the sidewalk and the road — when he turned away, he called someone on his cell phone. His back pockets appeared to be full of tools — couldn’t tell what. I think he stopped next door first — the very big dogs were barking and he didn’t stay there long.

    Keep eyes peeled — :-)

So the true reason for this opposition to the project is revealed. It is trying to prove the continued need of a US military presence in the Middle East to “protect” us from the violent Muslims. (Please note, I do not agree with the above mentioned belief system.) It is about oil, has always been about oil and continues to be about oil… They have it and we want it.

We have an electric range, white, not glass top, that we no longer need. It came with our house when we bought it. It’s always worked well, but we upgraded and have no need for two.

$50 OBO, you pick up at our location, we’ll help you load it. We’re in White Center. Email me at devilduck@mysocalledblog.com if you’re interested.

Thanks you for the responses & helpful links. I did call & met with an officer who was helpful. I am worried about what to do when I leave my house for longer than an hour because I have always been careful about locking doors & windows, and have a fairly protective dog that they would have had to pass…

I guess it’s the alarm & monitoring cameras for now.

    Velvet bulldog..

thanks for the offer… i am on my way to trader joes today.. so i suspect that is where i will start…
