Lein always gets my recommendation. I haven’t really compared prices, but they are certainly not substantially more than other places. Maybe the convenience would be worth a little more to you, or maybe this doesn’t help at all :).

    Hey all –

Thought I’d pop in on this one briefly.

Todd – if you, or anybody for that matter, are witnessing crimes on the streets of White Center, I will assume you are getting on your cell and calling KCSO. And remembering while you do that there are usually only three on-duty deputies in all of North Highline – to serve about 20,000 people. Budget cutbacks took ’em.

If you, or ANYBODY, sees ANYTHING, call the phone number. The KCSO Storefront is not always manned and if you do go in, they will likely ask if you have called the report in already. The storefront is not intended as a place to report crime. And while you are being a good citizen and calling the KCSO to report something, and that absolutely includes suspicious activity, go knock on the doors of the nearby businesses and bug them to call in the same thing. If businesses don’t call in anything, the cops do NOT have the data for effective coverage, even with the scant number of deputies. Everybody and their brother needs to call everything in. Dispensaries or no dispensaries.

The Green Piece lounge is NOT the standard dispensary model. There is only one other *known* existing medical marijuana lounge in the entire country and it is located in Portland, OR – the Cannabis Cafe. Many unique issues with this model arise. For instance, do DUI laws affect the “patients/clients” who emerge? Yup.

This is a strange interim in the process of the legislation and the rampant growth of the dispensaries is all over the entire state, not just here. But White Center is definitely the only “lounge” model anybody I’ve talked to knows about. And, most of the people who should know, haven’t heard about it because it hasn’t opened up yet. That’s scheduled for May 1, as is the other “store” style Herbal Legends a half-block north.

I’ve been told by Cannabis activists/lawyers that something is probably going to be announced on Friday out of Gregoire’s office. Perhaps a veto, perhaps not. Even the Cannabis advocates who are directly talking to Gregoire are barely clear on what the heck is going on in Olympia with proposed alternative legislation for the special session. So hopefully everybody can sit tight till then so we can begin to know the what and the why and how. And, remember, you can always contact your legislators, right?

And JanS, hoping you’re on your way to a successful surgery and feeling better very, very soon.

my only issue with the Jefferson Safeway is they got a new deli person who is VERY unhelpful… hubby & I went in at 7PM (deli closes at 9PM), asked for several things & the gal would NOT cut anything for us because “the slicer was being washed” (no, it was not…) any of the other deli staff are always apologetic & ask if I can wait while they slice things for me, but this girl apparently doesn’t know what good customer service is… I realize it’s 2 hours from closing, but umm… 2 hours… I can understand if I come in like 2 minutes before they close, but not 2 hours. Oh well, their meats are still better than QFC’s IMO (and cheaper).

Both of my children have been at the ILC since they were three months old. The entire staff is dedicated, capable, and truly care about the children. I would second all of the positive comments from Oliver.

In addition, the intergenerational activities provide experiences for my children that are invaluable to me. Both of my children are comfortable around the elderly and disabled. When my son was in YTR, he developed a special bond with one of the residents and when he would go to visit that floor each week, he would shout out the resident’s name as soon as he got off of the elevator, until the resident came out of his room.

My children know other staff members in the building and are always treated with respect.

The staff and teachers are no nonsense about expectations and identify behaviors and work with the children to problem solve. They have always been respectful of my children and are careful to not offer information about other children in the program.

My son will be starting kindergarten in the fall and he is excited about learning; he loves to spell out words, draw pictures, play, build, participate in the music and art activities, and always has a story to share at the end of the day.

I’d recommend visiting at different times of the day. Drop off and pick up can be more stessful for kids and the teachers work hard to keep as much of a routine as they can to help make the transition from home to school, and back, smooth.

I wouldn’t say that the teachers sugar-coat anything and that may come across as not being compassionate, but my experiences have been positive and I know my children are very well cared for during the day and that all of their teachers care for very much for them.

I hope you have the same experience!

Love West Seattle Produce! such an easy location and parking lot to get in and out of.

Their produce is always fresh and the prices are really good for the quality you get. I try to get as much produce there as I can.

Must try to taco truck next time!

Look forward to seeing you back in the future. While I don’t always agree with your views, I have appreciated your willingness to see the other side. The best way to actually tell if raw chicken or meat is bad is very simple. If you aren’t even sure or skeptical about the pull date, use your NOSE! The package it’s in often spoils along with it, but the butchers know this so they’ll repackage it so it still looks fresh even if the date is a day a way. They can’t fool an old pro like me though. Jefferson Square Safeway produce is the worst around. It always looks like a hurricane went through it and even if the lettuce is lined up and looks neat, it literally falls apart when you touch which is not a good sign. I look at the root(the bottom of the lettuce )for freshness first other than the leaf itself.

I have to go away for awhile. From the forum, not the city.

This is a great community of people. I Love West Seattle. But I have a ton of personal matters to deal with.

I will check in at times but I wish all of you the best. Thank You for your kindness and support when our first Basset Hound went to doggy heaven. And also Thank You for your kind words when I was let go from full-time employment after 20 years. Please continue supporting our friends like you always do when they need help.

When the NFL starts up again, you may see me at the Heartland watching the Green Bay Packers trying to repeat as Super Bowl Champions. I think they have a 30 to 1 shot. I will be rooting for the Seahawks too. In fact on some of their home games you might see me holding the big round parabolic dish with a Microphone. Yes, I love working in sports.

I have some major hurdles heading my way with family and pets. And if any of you are thinking about adopting, I leave you with this advice. Have a strong support network and a good exercise plan. These kids are awesome but many are hurting or have some type of damage, and the subconscious brings out many issues to the conscious. Always Love Them. In the end, it is up to the child to decide how they want the world to view them. We as parents can only try to show them the way. West Seattle is a nurturing community and a great place to raise a family.

My only wish is that there were a few more Republicans in this area. I want to thank JoB, JanS, Charla and C@tlbob among many others. Thanks for the memories.

    The Trillions of debt.

    Sweetheart, Lets get real.

Fact, since REAGAN, generally debt accumulated during the REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL YEARS.

No argument. Your 30 year argument is correct.

But, what you have to look at is what happened in the Senate and the House. Redblack has already stated this in so many words.

During the Reagan years, Supply Side economics and the decrease of the tax rates were ushered in over three years. Reagan cut a deal with the Houses. They agreed to the tax cuts, but they were also supposed to cut spending. That didn’t happen and the Democrats had a bit more control of the Houses than the Republicans.

Bush 1. He raised taxes and had a minor war. Discretionary spending jumped again. Minor recession.

Clinton 1. Clinton tried a big government approach and lost out. He quickly became a small government guy and with the Gingrich Congress, the government revenues actually caused a surplus. Minor recession at the end of his tenure.

During those years, Gingrich left and Hastert became the House Speaker. That to me was the beginning of the downfall of the Republicans.

Bush 2 gets elected and also has to deal with the dot com recession. 9 months later 911 happens. Bush does not veto any bills for many years. Spending by the Republicans and Democrats soars. Add two War fronts plus the Prescription Drug plan, you have some serious spending issues. Plus, Bush II is partly conservative partly progressive. Makes tax cuts but signs legislation that is unfunded or spends more and more.

The main problem for the Bush years especially in the latter years was that spending increased 24% not including the wars. Congress was having a ball. Bush did not veto the excesses and helped create more debt.

And Why? Democrats get the house in 2007 and the Senate. Spending goes up. The 2008 Election brings in Mr. Obama. He, Reid and Pelosi, make up for lost time when the Republicans were not spending as much as the Democrats would have. Plus, Obama inherits a terrible crash in the economy. Bush starts TARP, Obama adds Stimulus plus more spending. Republicans are a non-factor. The only show in town was the Donkey show.

JoB, If Presidents are to be the point people in the discussion of the debt, then Yes, they are guilty in your eyes. But the fact is the Congress raises monies for the government. What is Patty Murray known for. Getting the Pork. Is this always good? No it isn’t.

I know this is very hard for you to understand JoB, but if your Democrats and my Republicans except Jack Kemp, would have kept their wallets closed, we would not have started down the road we are on. Yes, the Reagan tax cuts were deep, but the revenue generated was one of the best in our countries history. But with that economic model, there needs to be fiscal responsibility and frankly, for only a few years during the Clinton era, there hasn’t been enough.

Additionally, this is why the TEA Party is infiltrating the Republican party. There is a chance enough people can change the Republican party to be more responsible about spending tax dollars. The Democrats are quite often a lost cause in that regard. Look at the first two years of Clinton and Obama. What did the Democrats try to do. Social engineering and spend more money. What happens each time. The country yells and screams and says Whoa pardner. You are going too fast.

Just raising taxes won’t help. If you raise the top tax bracket rates to the Clinton era levels, in ten years that would generate about 730 Billion extra dollars. If you raise them more, even Democratic millionaires will try to hide more of their money (along with their Republican cronies)

Here is where our McCain moment comes. Compromise. All classes have benefited from the lower tax rates but our country is not getting enough revenues. The lefts mantra that only the rich have benefited is a lie. If the Bush Tax Cuts had expired the lowest earners tax rates would have jumped 50%. Granted, the Top Tier people have certainly benefited from the cuts. Change the tax system.

Mr. Obama, instead of demanding spreading the wealth should be embracing the leaders of industry and asking them for help. He should focus on simplifying the tax code. Cut out the corporate loopholes but not tax the companies too much. Also the Top 1 or 2 percent could have another tax bracket. They could be asked to contribute more by also closing the loopholes. 16% is not enough of a tax payoff. GE should be paying taxes. (Funny, I don’t hear you railing against Obama’s best private company friend GE). And although the Rich during the Bush years had a lower tax rate, they paid more in taxes than the previous years because they did generate more revenues. So your argument that the policies only helped the Rich are not quite right but good thing they did or we would have even more debt. But with such a screwy tax system, there are too many loopholes. Not enough is coming in.

Finally, the first two years of the Obama Presidency caused the debt to go up even more. Even adding in the Off the Books war debt. Welfare type programs in 2010 cost more than the entire Iraq war.

So, JoB, I will let you believe it is all of the Republicans fault. Go ahead. Additionally you are right, the power brokers must not repeat the sins of the past. But, you always seem to talk about greed. Maybe the 10 commandments ought to be put in every CEO’s office too!!!

Infrastructure can be rebuilt when we take care of the problems the past has created. Obama is a great speaker. He could, if he knew how to, lead us to more prosperity. But I don’t believe he knows how.

The truth is, if the surpluses would have been there, he would have ushered in more government programs to help people and “spread the wealth” He has tried for two years. Now he has to clean up the mess that was left for him or face not getting re-elected.

This is why Trump is almost a serious candidate. Many Republicans are afraid to take on the tough issues. Trump is arrogant. He is extremely wealthy. He is a business man and not a conservative. He is more like the moderate Republicans. But he is not afraid to say anything. Whether we like it or not, he is resonating with many Americans like Perot did a few years back. If Gas prices and inflation go up and we get another recession, Mr. Obama is doomed.

So I believe many of you on the left are going to be disappointed with him in many areas because although he talks a good game at times, he will compromise. He will start giving on some more issues.

And the Republicans are going to hit him hard. Fuel Prices, Unemployment, The Gulf, Healthcare, The Debt, The Deficit, Possibly Libya. He will be going more gray in the next two years.

The problem is, the Republicans need a candidate. Right now, there isn’t one.

For anyone in the habit of buying chicken or turkey from Foster Farms, here’s how to check how many days it’s been sitting around since it was packed. QFC, for example, sets the pull date 13 or 14 days after FF’s pack date.

(The only reason I picked on Foster is that they put the pack date on the packages. In itself, that’s a good thing. But you can’t expect them to be able to produce very good chicken at those prices, even the first day it arrives on the shelf.)

QFC, especially at Westwood, is in the habit of maintaining a large and impressive looking shelf stock of these birds. But the larger the pile, the less of it is fresh on a given day.

FF sprays the pack date onto the front, like this.

    2011102

    2011 day 102 was April 12.

    2011 day 103 was April 13.

Today is the 26th, the likely sell-by date for those birds. You might well buy a package of turkey today that’s been sitting around for two weeks.

Poultry should be like fresh bread. It’s walking around clucking at dawn. Shortly after, it’s packed and on its way to the store. It’s on the shelf at midday, and on my plate for the evening meal. After suppertime, if there’s any left on the shelf (and there shouldn’t be much), mark it down to be sure of selling it by the time the next day’s shipment arrives at midday the next day. When it does, if there’s still any of the previous day’s stock on the shelf (and there shouldn’t be), give it to the food bank.

I’d like to see 365 inventory turns a year on poultry. Lots of two week old chicken and turkey reaching its expiration date while on a store’s shelves means that something is lacking in a store’s conception of fresh food.

In addition, if the poultry always turned over completely every day, the producers wouldn’t have to soak it so much in that vat of chemical antimicrobial solution before shipping it out for a two week vacation on the store shelf before you eat it.

I can not tell you how much I love the WSP!! I try to do 100% of my produce shopping there. They always have excellent advice about whats fresh and good. I have never gone home with anything bad… ever! I love that they have milk (raw too), eggs, bread, spices, teas. Now, if they would just sell bacon and wine I would hardly have to go anywhere else. They remember me and my family every time I go there. Ask how the kids are even when they are not with me.

Ever time I go there I am given amazing samples of yummy goodness. Sometimes if i’m unsure if my family will like it they give me a small bit to take home. Today while I was there, I told Bruce what I was going to make for dinner and he pulled out some new olive oils and balsamic to try. Of course, I ended up taking one home cause it was so great. Everyone is so friendly and always makes my day to go there.

They are my own personal “produce pusher”… Im hooked and keep going back for more!

    They do except cash/ plastic.

Dave is the Manager at the JS Safeway… unless he was replaced in the past week… and he’s always been really good about problems. A couple of times over the years I’ve returned meat or something that hasn’t smelled right and they’ve always replaced it or refunded me immediately, no questions asked. Sometimes employees forget to pull expired products or sometimes stores get deliveries of bad food… stuff happens at even the best businesses. The important thing is that they make it right for you. Ask for Dave and see if he listens. I would imagine he would want to know if there’s a problem he needs to address.

I always check the expiration date on things, even in Thriftway! I’ve found expired cheese on the deli shelves and have had bad produce.

And from Safeway (Roxbury) I’ve had a pepper that looked absolutely fine outside, but cut it open to find a large colony of mold, and apples that are brown inside… It happens. Most stores (including Safeway) have a return policy – but in this case it’s probably not that it _could_ be returned – it’s the employee/management reaction at having something returned.

A “Sorry you got a bad egg (heh) here’s your refund (smile)” would go a lot farther for customer relations than an apathetic grunt.

Is there a Non-Profit Organization for dummies? Or a class on how to do it?

A friend and I are throwing around the idea, and in all honesty I’ve always wondered about it.

I am aware there are many technicalities and loops you have to jump through, I don’t know what they all are however.

We haven’t worked out a mission statement or a specific purpose or anything like that yet, at the moment it’s just an idea.

In the event it gets fleshed out where do we start? Once we have our goals and our purpose how do we begin is I guess what I’m asking.

Also is the 503c what we should be looking into? I came across this http://www.form-a-corp.com/non-profits_QA.php

Sorry about the over all general and vague format the questions are in, I’m just trying to absorb information. :S

I love Budget Cuts. Lily and Na have been doing my hair for over a year now. Before they opened I had been to other salons in the area and I have not found one that has more talented stylists than this one. I have never had a bad haircut here. Everyone is so friendly and their prices are the best in West Seattle! The place is always clean and that’s important to me. Met their manager Kristin the other day. Sweet as can be. She did a miracle on a ladies hair color while I was there. This woman looked like a different person when she was done. Try them out and you will not be disappointed!

Even when your guys do it, you still spin it. You guys crack me up.

Regarding the fourth estate, fine, we use your words.

There is news everywhere. Whether it be right wing, left wing, middle of the road or parody. I rarely agree with any Rolling Stone political piece which will most always slant to left but at least they say what is on their mind. And if it shows an abuse of power with a politician, then that is good.

Also, if it be across the whole spectrum and brings out problems with government, I am all for it.

But there is bias whether some of you want to admit it or not.

You might be right that there is not any un-biased news, but there is enough information out there to make informed choices. It sometimes takes a while to sift through it.

Excluding them does not help us. Choosing not to watch or read is everyones choice. Are we not better off with a whole spectrum of choices?

Regarding an earlier post. We are not spending enough on the right kind of domestic programs and infrastructure.

JoB, here is the definition of far right.

    Adj. 1. far-right – extremely conservative

    and far left –

    adjective radical or extremely liberal

So I guess the word “extreme” can be used for the right. And the word “radical” can be used for the left.

I don’t buy it or your propaganda.
