If you go into the Admiral Starbucks at a busy 7:30 am, you’ll find the entire large table taken up by Hauss Construction as an impromptu office. With the closure of the Alki Starbucks, renovation closure of the Avalon Drive through & the physical size of the Admiral store, this construction crew parked in the lobby brings unnecessary congestion. Laptop charging cords strung across the floor, limited parking stalls & maybe 3 paying customers for a crew of 6 or seven is just plain poor form. These guys are clueless. I’m sure the staff aren’t in a position to say anything.

I just found out a book I put in a little library, “Men to Avoid in Art and Life” was not a gift but a loan. There’s an inscription from my friend’s sister, I should have returned the book. I don’t remember which Little Library (but it would have been on Gatewood Hill though it may have subsequently traveled further), or when I did it, but it was sometime this year. If you have come across it, please let me know!!

This “Pre-Death and Once-in-a-Lifetime Estate Sale,” features many high quality drinking cups-mugs and accessories, framed Asian Block Prints, antiques, Venetian masks, fencing gear, Kerosene Lamps, musical instruments, interesting knives and bayonets, straw hats, etc. etc. etc. that have been collected over a period of 50 years.

Here are some items of special interest:

As it happens, due to my long-time enjoyment of European and Japanese sport fencing, there is also a large collection of knives, bayonets, swords and fencing gear available for purchase. Some of these items are authentic original pieces. Others are nicely made replicas.

The fencing gear includes foils, epees, sabers and both European and Japanese protective items. The Japanese kendo hand and head “armor” are genuine antique collector’s items.

Among the above mentioned politically incorrect items are two crossbows. A small modern one … and … a large medieval replica made of wood and sinew. Bolts are available for both crossbows.

On a more domestic front, we have a really nice almost-new deep-fat-fryer and three “in-the-box” infrared air fryers available at low prices.

For the preppers and adventurers, we have a cuddly flannel lined large sleeping bag, a brand new two room “instant-up” tent, a never used four burner propane stove and a really nice (and hard-to-find) two-burner unleaded-gas burning Coleman camp stove.

And, last-but-not-least, for old tool enthusiasts, we have an antique two-man saw, an ancient blacksmith-made cedar shingle splitting froe … and … limbing hatchets and axe heads galore.

The Pre-Death and Once-in-a-Lifetime Estate Sale, will happen Saturday (August 31) from 1 PM until 5 PM.

See you Saturday, at the location below (which is in West Seattle, very close to Chief Sealth High School on Thistle street!

    Longfellow Run Condominium
    8424 – 26th Ave SW Unit C
    Seattle, WA 98106

Park on 26th Ave please. There is a short walk down a concrete path to Unit C, which is on the left of the path.

PS: Early birds will be asked to good-naturedly stand in line outside until 1 PM.

PPS: PLEASE: don’t inquire about items as I don’t have time to answer everyone’s questions due to other obligations. I believe the best decision you can do for yourself & your money is see an item in person, touch it, feel it, etc in order to get a true idea of condition so you can make an informed decision.

PPPS: Resellers are welcome … but … will find that our asking prices are more suitable for end user collectors. This event is not an “all things must go” garage sale. The items we are offering are of high quality and quite unusual … so … expect fair prices, not low prices. Never-the-less, up-to Half-off pricing will be available for some items.

PPPPS: Cash is very much appreciated.

Thank you for posting this, I always looked for his miws handle in posts. Mike was a stellar guy and I was honored to have followed his journey out of Nickelsville and help him when he set up his apt in White Center supplying everything he needed to set up his bathroom — it was an honor to have been able to meet him in person. He will surely be missed.

I thought I had replied when I saw this at 3 am today before going off-watch but it apparently didn’t take. I wanted to say thank you to the person who posted it. I am trying to find out a bit more (beyond the medical call, which was easy enough to verify via dispatch audio) and I will be writing something for the main page. Looking at the stats, beyond his participation here in the Forum over the years, he commented more than 4,100 times on WSB stories; as Anonyme said, usually a welcome cheerful voice, often helpful and informative too, sometimes with an interesting bit of history. Before he moved across the bay, he would usually come visit our booth at the annual festivals where we table, to say hi and check in. Farewell and rest well, Mike. – TR

I’m sorry to share the sad news that Mike Stahl aka: miws passed away this morning. I know many of you followed his story of living in Nicklesville and transitioning into housing. Mike lived in West Seattle for most of his life, from North Admiral, to Morgan Junction and then the south end of West Seattle for many years until he moved into an assisted living facility in New Holly last summer. He was very happy and comfortable in his new community and they took good care of him.

He loved being part of the West Seattle community–both online and off. The West Seattle Blog was literally a lifeline for him when he became homeless due to medical treatment and being unable to work or pay his rent. A group of community members formed “Team Mike” to get him signed up with the appropriate agencies, get him to medical appointments, and raise money to transition him into permanent housing. It was truly neighbors helping neighbors. And BTW, if anyone says it’s easy to get out of homelessness, they’re totally wrong. It takes time, energy, commitment and help. Mike would want you to know that.

Mike was a lifelong JP Patches and Volkswagen fan. A longtime member of the “Patches Pals” group! Despite many life challenges, Mike never turned bitter. Everyone I talked to at his living community said, “Mike is SO nice!” His kindness and wit will be missed.

By-the-way and as it happens, we are downsizing a 50 year collection of “cool and unusual things” we have collected over many years. Therefore, we have a lot of very nice items for sale.

These include blacksmith forged kitchen-ware; interesting knives, traditional Asian block prints in glass fronted wooden frames; bayonets; walking sticks; hatchets and axes; mountain man gear … and … many other items of both general and special interest.
