We had never heard about the incident either. I checked the archives, I checked the police log and the fire log for that date. There was a medical call to the neighborhood, but it was nothing that surfaced to us at the time or any time afterward. After hearing about the ST story, I looked for the case and downloaded the documents. It was filed last November, about four months before the story. I didn’t see any obvious reason it came to their attention unless they were contacted by the family. Like all lawsuits, it makes accusations, and the subjects of the lawsuits file documents denying them – lawsuits are a little dicier to report on than criminal charges, because anyone can sue you for anything, whether or not there’s evidence. The Times reporter attempted to relate the case in the context of societal attitudes rather than just telling the story, but nonetheless it was clearly a ton of work over the course of weeks or maybe even months, including public-disclosure requests to get police reports (which generally take months). Best I can do is watch the case and cover the trial if it’s not settled first; I’ll be checking the file periodically. – TR

I was surprised to see this story in Seattle Times earlier this month. I had never heard about this event, and I didn’t see any reporting on WSB from the time frame (maybe I missed it?)

A man being killed by residents in much the same way as George Floyd died in the winter after the protests seems newsworthy to me, but I can’t find any other coverage besides the ST article. Seems like it would be as much of a topic as the latest gunfire, car accident, package theft etc.

Is this something everyone knows about? Can anyone point me to other coverage?

Don’t worry – it’ll be tagged (urban ART) or usurped for some “neighborhood ‘ART’ installation” soon enough.

Yes they are. The people you talked to are wrong. They are “neighborhood traffic circles”, and you’re supposed to go around to the right if possible. “If possible” includes situations where you got there first and you just don’t feel like driving around the circle.

Neighbors…once again I’m reaching out as a volunteer on behalf of the West Seattle Clothesline (https://westseattlefoodbank.org/clothesline/). We’ve been seeing a gradual increase in the number of families stopping by and are currently averaging about 20 families/day! Since we want to make sure we have enough offerings to meet the needs of all our clients, please consider donating now! In particular, we are in desperate need of Men’s clothing, especially shirts (all types…dress, polo, tee), pants/shorts, sweatshirts/hoodies/sweaters, and shoes/sneakers. Additionally, we can use a new influx of bedding and towels.

As you consider donating items, please make sure your donations are in good shape (i.e. you would still wear or use…but perhaps don’t fit, have outgrown the style, or just cleaning out your closets)! It would be ideal if your donations were bagged in garbage/plastic bags that can be closed. This helps us keep them clean and dry.
The Clothesline is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am – 1pm, and it is located at 4425 41st Ave SW, Seattle WA. A large parking lot is available.

Thank you… thank you…thank you. The generosity of our West Seattle neighbors has always reinforced the Food Bank’s motto of Neighbors Helping Neighbors! With gratitude and appreciation, Meade Thayer

Living close to West Seattle High School isn’t unpleasant. There’s traffic in the morning and release time. The students can go off campus for lunch. During that time the local stores and eateries are busy. Same is true after school. There’s no obnoxious noise outside of the usual traffic. All in all, I’d say they’re good neighbors.

Parking around churches will be tough on Sunday’s or when there’s an event there. Majority of people going will drive. Schools will have employees coming and parking early and-especially if it’s raining a LOT of parents driving their kids to school or driving to come pick them up. One funny school story is from the Seattle Times. Many years ago due to parents and neighbors’ complaints about speeders around schools SPD did emphasis patrols for a week around schools. Final tally: 75% of the speeding tickets were to parents dropping off or coming to pick up their kids. Noise: unless you live right next door shouldn’t be any noise around churches. If you live by Genesee’s playfield or Hiawatha there’ll be noise when the kids are out playing otherwise shouldn’t be much more than normal noise.

Hello, my family and I are house hunting in West Seattle. I’d love to hear people’s experiences of living next to schools and churches. Do they make for good or bad neighbors? What are some of the issues you’ve encountered? I’m specifically looking at houses in the vicinity of the following:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

    Genesee Hill Elementary

    West Seattle High School

If you live near any of these or have some insights into the noise and traffic patterns around these spots would very much appreciate your thoughts!

“Sharing tools with neighbors helps me feel like I’m in a supportive community where people care about one another and where we do things together.”

“The first 6 months of being homeowners we were fortunate to have utilized the tool library at least every other week. The staff were so helpful, friendly and we were able to meet neighbors during drop-off and pick-up. This is one of the best resources West Seattle has to offer to its community.”

“Some of the first friendly faces I met in West Seattle were at the tool library! As a brown woman folks often do not expect me to be able to fix things around the house myself. The volunteers at the tool library treated me with respect. Successfully executing these house projects gave me a lot of confidence in my own abilities and pride in my home which allowed me to be a more engaged neighbor.”

“I love the WSTL so much. It teaches repair, it makes woodworking and building accessible to a much wider group. …WSTL also aims to inspire people to participate in community projects such as park restorations and pursue sustainability through fun projects like backyard gardens, home energy improvements, water harvesting, and other environmental projects.”

“In our family, WSTL has been an invaluable resource. When we bought our house, it needed many repairs, but hiring professional contractors would have stretched our budget too thin. Instead, we turned to WSTL, where we were able to borrow all the tools we needed, from power drills to ladders. Furthermore, WSTL’s workshops and educational resources empowered us to tackle these repairs ourselves, helping us to save a significant amount of money while also gaining new skills.”

We are searching for an after school nanny to take care of 3 boys (ages 4, 5 & 6) Monday-Thursday from 2:30-5:30pm at our home in the High Point neighborhood of West Seattle. Looking for someone with a flexible schedule that can easily roll with the punches if we need to switch days of week or potentially cancel with advance notice. (Any fluctuation in schedule would be based on school-year schedule ie spring break, and extracurricular activities like tee ball and swim lessons and would be agreed upon in advance). Role mainly includes supervision and keeping them fed, taking them to parks in the neighborhood, doing art with them, playing with them…really just keeping them entertained and not fighting with each other (haha!). Rate is $34/hr. Email laurel@ounceswestseattle.com if interested.

I walk Alki Ave every morning. I do see lots of cars that I’m pretty sure are exceeding the posted speed limit. Considering the time of day 99% of those drivers are Alki residents that should have left for work or school or their appointment 5 minutes sooner. Which brings up an article I read a while back that the vast majority of speeders in a neighborhood are residents of that neighborhood. Another fun read was a Seattle Times article several years ago. Because of parents complaints about speeders in school zones before and after school SPD spent a week at various schools before and after school. Final tally: 75% of tickets were given to PARENTS coming to drop off their kids or coming to pick up their kids.

What our team says about the company.

‘Close To Home has been an amazing place for me after leaving a high-stress job. Being outside, exercising and connecting with animals is the perfect antidote for career burnout and has helped tremendously with my depression and anxiety. Plus, the miles I’m walking have conditioned me enough so I am able to do all the hikes that seemed out of reach previously.’
