Jan, the point is that Obama wasn’t pushing any discussions of inane things. At any time, Clinton could have said, “Why are we talking about this crap?” She didn’t — she jumped on.

I’m not even angry with her–I’m disappointed and sad for what might have been, and what this campaign has become. And, NO, it isn’t something anyone did to her.

It’s going to be over soon. Sooner than June. The pressure is on, from inside and outside the Clinton campaign. It will not linger until June.

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

The Clintons and other DLC folks may complain that Dean doesn’t have standing — they tried desperately, without success, to keep him from being elected. Running hacks against him. The hacks lost. He’s DLC head, he’s right, and the Supers will listen to him.

    It will be over soon.

walfredo…I was off selling raffle tickets for our fundraiser until just before 9pm, so I caught what was left of the debate after that time. I missed the first part, have only seen bits and pieces of it, so, yes, I’m aware that he seemd very calm, in control, and above board for that part that I did see. I’m simply frustrated that we never get to hear about actual things that need addressing unless the “askers” ask something like..”do you pledge to do so and so” to each one…and then we get..”yes’I’ll pledge to do that”…tell me how…get into the meat and potatoes of it…and make sure you tell me that you ain’t gonna do nuthin’ without the cooperation of congress…that’s what I want. I’m tired of the inane, picayune things going back and forth…she said she’d rather not bake cookies, he associated with so-and-so when he was 8years old. It’s disturbing to many of us – we don’t give a rat’s behind…there are far more important things to discuss than simply trying to impugn your rival with stupid things…

JoB- to your point, that this is what you should expect if he wins.

This is what we do expect from the Rove-era politics, and this McCain group. Of course it is. Barack today said, last night you got a preview of how this race is going to be run in the fall. They laid it all out in front of you.

It’s actually a great speech, with a great tone:

    http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/gGC5Fd

What bothers me, and many democrats, is not the reality that the republican slime machine exists and is ready to pounce, but instead Clinton’s overwhelming embrace of these politics. The obvious “lessons” she has learned and embraced over the years from this playbook. In truth, it is impossible to distinguish her current campaign and its tactics with those used by Karl Rove and GW the past 8 years.

You left out the part to where Clinton once again was caught lieing. During the debate, when asked direct questions, she said what she believed people wanted to hearwhen they had numerous recent quotes opposing what she had just said. Now that is nice work.

JoB- I am mad that Sean Hannity gets to ask his radically extreme right-wing paranoid, lunatic fringe questions during a nationally televised debate. Now, if Sean got to ask these questions directly, any fair minded person would say- well he is so ridicilously biased and nuts that maybe that question is not fair.

But no, not only does he get the opportunity to have his question asked during a national debate. But he gets to have it asked through a “fair journalist” disguise, and have his radical rants injected into the mainstream media, and the general conversation.

This has nothing to do with Hillary, I’m not bashing her. I’ve tried to be fair to her about this debate.

Do you think Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity should get the right to frame the conversation for the democratic debates that are being broadcast on ABC? This is not a candidate issue, this is a big deal…

I said this morning, in a bit of sarcasm that if the Sean Hannity and the National Enquirer hosted this debate it would have had more dignity, and relevance. I had NO IDEA, not in my wildest conspiracy fascination, would I have guessed that in fact- SEAN HANNITY was the person writing questions asked during the debate! It’s insane…

JanS- to your point, Barack consistently and without exception, when asked an inane question tried to stear the conversation to those issues, even when he was asked about Bosnia and Clinton’s gaffe. Clinton consistently, and without exception got right down in the muck and started slinging it around. And she is getting credit to do for coming off more forceful and confident, because she was indeed far more comfortable in this type enviroment. I don’t see how you can say the two candidates were at all similar in response to the debate questions.

JoB I suggest you find some way to watch the debate. I dont know what part Walfredo was upset about, but what I was upset about was the fact that they continually tried to air the dirty laundry of both canidates rather than concentraing on more important things like the issues.

If you had taken the time to watch the debate you may have had a different opinion of Obama today because not only did he take the higher road of the two canidates, but during the debate he continually tried to get the questions back on track to what is important the issues.

And when I refer to the higher road, I am refering to the fact, that when asked questions about “rumors” of his opponent he did not stoop to their level and play there game. He stepped above it and took the more admirable position. While Clinton on the other hand did not.

That would be ‘Cycle 8’ of America’s Next Top Model. :) I think Tyra is trying to make the show seem classier than it really is by referring to the seasons as cycles. Embarrassingly enough, I still watch that crap, ‘cycle’ after dramatic ‘cycle’.

well, to be fair…Hillary is not above reproach when it comes to rubbing elbows with less than admirable people. It’s ALL a distraction…and I would like both candidates to tell the “askers” in these “debates” (a loose term)…to stop, to ask something important. There are so many issues that are more important to me. The priceof gasoline…going up, up, up, and of course, affecting the truckers, and food costs, etc, etc. etc. Who was it that said “It’s the economy, stupid”? And, yes, the war, and, yes, the rest of the middle east, and, yes, all those other things that affect us little people..insurance, mortages,…ABC dropped the ball…and the candidates allowed them to…it made me sick. I’m frankly fed up with the tactics of both candidates…let’s get real…

Daniellep responded to my comment in the manner i meant it… and i appreciate that a lot.

it wasn’t just another opportunity to get on a soapbox. Believe me there are plenty of those i have been passing up on purpose on this forum lately.

I mentioned the trend in this campaign because i think it is self destructive… it leaves the person you are trying to convince with more of an impression of your anger than your passion.

i believe very strongly that when you get the opportunity to influence someone else with your opinions that your influence is much greater if you stick to why you support something rather than why you don’t support something else…

I still believe Danielle’s argument about ethics would have been much stronger if she had simply given instances of what Obama actually did and said that illustrated the differences rather than instances of what his opponent did not.

I would do her a disservice in responding to her own armchair quarterbacking any other way.

I would encourage all of you to think about that the next time you have the opportunity to convince anyone about anything.

We don’t properly equip our soldiers.. we don’t honor our agreements to them.. we pay them so little that their families have to depend upon public aid… we deny them medical care… they have had to fight for the right to benefits and fight not to be sent back to Iraq after their enlistments have ended…

and they are subject to both US and military law.. even while following a commander’s orders.

but we pay “security companies” top dollar, allowing them to honor their employees contracts, provide incredible medical benefits and very good life insurance for their employees’s families and pay them top dollar…

and we hold both individuals and the companies that employ them blameless for actions they instigate “on our behalf”…

This is how we honor our troops.

I called Joe the Plumber (based on recommendations in this thread) after I got a $650 bid from Southwest plumbing to clean out a floor drain that was backing up in the basement.

    <br>

He came out this morning (a few minutes early even!) and was able to fix the problem in less than a half hour! For < $100!!!! He even talked me through how I’d go about fixing a leaky faucet in the bathroom!

Finding a good, trustworthy & honest tradesperson is a rare thing. Thanks WSB forums for the recommendation, and thanks Joe for a job well done!

    walfredo,

what exactly are you upset about? that the questions were asked or that they were asked at a democratic debate?

i didn’t watch the debate and from what i heard on NPR today.. it was a good thing i didn’t…

That wasn’t a debate.. that was a sideshow.

it’s to bad because America really deserves to hear these two candidates debate the issues.

i don’t choose to watch network TV for a reason.. i don’t need talking heads telling me how to think… i just want the news and thankfully today there are a lot of ways to get the news without having to continually consume the media owner’s prejudices along with it… it’s one reason why i come here.

perhaps it’s time Senator Obama got asked the same kinds of questions that Hillary has been asked throughout the campaign… because those questions are going to become the staples of the election this fall… whether we like it or not.

I don’t remember your indignation when Monica (the woman hillary’s husband cheated on her with…) came up as a campaign issue… not even when some reporter posed the question to their daughter.

Is it news to you that the media has been shaping the story all along? Welcome to the real world.

Whether he likes it or not, When Senator Obama chose to limit his message mainly to “phrases of hope” and limit the public’s knowledge of him as much as possible to his own words… he created the climate for these kinds of questions… and that kind of criticism.

Senator Obama has spent a lot of time working… often in very close circumstances… with people who have been at best unwise in some of their choices… and who he now tries to pass of as acquaintances…

That won’t wash under the kind of scrutiny Hillary has endured… and if he wins the nomination… this is what he can expect.

This is what you can expect.

Ah, it is so refreshing to see some Midwest common sense (I’m not being sarcastic either)!! I’m amazed every morning getting on 99 North that so many people feel the urge to move over to the left IMMEDIATELY, instead of just picking up speed in the right lane and just driving.

I think some drivers are justs afraid of falling off the face of the earth- these are the people that merge immediately when getting on a highway, and also the ones that nearly cause accidents because they’re about to miss their exit off the highway and scramble to the right instead of going to the next exit and back-tracking. The world will not end if you drive past your exit people- just go the next one!

To me, this is absolutely shocking. I don’t care what side you support… ABC’s moderator met with Sean Hannity about what questions to ask, and then repeated the question basically word for word. It was not phrased as, a right-wing nutjob who spends 4 hours per day on radio and tv bashing you and all things democratic wanted me to ask you…

Are we serious? I think Stephanopolis should be fired. Not to mention his absurd conflict of interest being a member of Clinton I’s campaign staff. Forget that, he is a puppet for the most extreme partisan talking head on television and radio…

Hi JoB. Thanks for the feedback. And for the writing intents of my story, I didn’t include even a fourth of the conversation that took place that day….it would have made for too technical of a read. I can see your point about supporters of my candidate feeling the need to insult Hillary in the same vain they are praising Obama. What I hope you’ll take some time to think about is that, to me, it’s as important that people realize WHY Obama supporters don’t like Hillary as it is to know why we DO support Barack. For me, issues of equality for all people of the utmost importance. I care less about any other issue in this race. That’s not to say that I don’t care about providing everyone with good healthcare, bringing our troops home safely, and getting our economy where it should be. My whole philosophy is that NO ONE CAN BE GREAT UNTIL EVERYONE IS OK. And even if all of the above issues were being acheived, an issue that we don’t put on the agenda is the uncomfortable one of leveling the playing field of opportunity for all Americans. When I pointed out to the S.D. the defining snapshot of Hillary’s character, (the opportunity she had to dispell the myth about Barack’s religion) it was because I feel as though that was her chance to validate that she ACTUALLY DOES BELIEVE IN what she says she believes in: civil rights, equality, etc. I believe we saw what Hillary Clinton is actually made of in that instant. Instead of saying, “you know, he’s my opponent…I believe his not ready to be president for other reasons, but let’s put this to rest. He’s a Christian.” Perhaps she could have even elevated the conversation by mentioning that being Muslim doesn’t make you a criminal or a terrorist either. But she didn’t. Instead, she took the lowest of roads. And in that moment I saw the most selfish, and fraudulent character come out of Hillary. And I think that should be relevant to anyone who cares about human decency. It’s easy to be a soldier when there’s no war. And right then was Hillary’c chance to show that she’s a true soldier for equal rights…AND SHE DIDN’T.

I totally respect your right to choose which candidate reflects your beliefs and views. For me, Barack Obama is what this country needs right now. I think he becoming president will lift the moral of so many who have been beat up by our system.

I read a life changing book years ago that I think is relevant here. And I’d love to read it again in some sort of book club format. If anyone is interested let me know. It’s called “The Education Of A WASP” by Lois Mark Stalvey.

This is a thread to discuss and support a young woman’s contact with a SuperDelegate. I hesitate to respond to JoB’s reaction and I would hope further discussion can take place on one of the Clinton threads.

It is clear that DanielleP spoke eloquently of her reasons for supporting Obama. She also spoke eloquently of the Clinton negatives.

JoB, after the desperate tactics of the Clinton campaign, including during the debate last night, I can’t believe you think we should all stay on some imaginary high road and avoid attacking Clinton. She left that road months ago, if she ever was on it.

As you’ve said to me, in other forums about other subjects, you’re smarter than that.

This notion that Clinton can say and do anything and we should all just shut up about it isn’t going to wash. I wouldn’t bother post about it, except the attitude isn’t limited to this forum.

Good job, Danielle — on making all of the salient points.

    daniellep…

even i.. a strong Hillary supporter.. applaud you.

This was not an easy thing to do.. and i think you did a great job.

and i wouldn’t worry so much about what you didn’t say… we all armchair quarterback ourselves afterwards. if only we had said….

but i would ask why you thought it was necessary to spend any of your precious time talking about Hillary.. unless of course, you were asked direct questions?

this is the great mystery to me in this campaign… why so many feel they have to put her down in the most forceful terms to support him?

all of those examples you use to show what a bad person she is.. how dishonest she is.. can be heard more than one way… and most of you only listen to what the evening news and your candidates campaign spin doctors tell you to hear.

if you believe strongly in your candidate, you can support them best with your enthusiasm.

When that superdelegate left you… what did you want him to remember? That you could see no good in Hillary or that you passionately felt Obama was the best candidate?

I can’t urge you enough to find any opportunity to support your candidate..

and the only armchair quarterbacking i would offer is that you need to be sure that you leave them with the message you most wanted them to hear…

I don’t know you. You don’t support my candidate. But still, i am very proud of you… and proud to have the opportunity to hear you…

OMG YES. The huge backup every morning getting onto 509 with the Cloverdale ramp would not be an issue if people would use the half mile of merge lane available to them. Just because the white line comes to a little V-point does not mean that is the ONLY place you can merge into traffic! Gah!
