Why the assumption of racism? Because it is soooooo pervasive and sometimes even unconscious. There’s a lot of social and lab science that confirms this. And the person of color has probably experienced this all her life, so she’s more likely to attribute it to racism, rather than to your friendship with the barista.
And it’s possible the barista does have biases, conscious or unconscious.
It’s just more common, and more pervasive than people want to admit.
