The revival of NW Native Canoe Culture all started with “Paddle to Seattle” during the State Centennial in 1989. The Duwamish Tribe hosted the final leg of “Paddle to Seattle” event. After a 2 week voyage, on Friday, July 21, 1989; the Duwamish Tribe greeted a flotilla of 18 Native Canoes and invited them to come ashore at Golden Gardens Park on Shilshole Bay. The Duwamish Tribe hosted the final 2 day event—over 5,000 gathered, camped in the park, celebrated their cultural and enjoyed canoe races. The Canoe Journey is now a yearly event. Sponsored by CARW (Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites) & the Duwamish Longhouse.
