West Seattle, Washington
17 Monday

Two weeks into the work at 30th/Yancy/Avalon/Andover, SDOT says it’s about to switch sides from the west to the east:
Construction on the west side of SW Avalon Way at SW Andover St is progressing smoothly. The crews anticipate that they will wrap up the west side work and move over to build the east side improvements as soon as this Wednesday, April 13.
As a reminder, when crews are working on the east side of SW Avalon Way both 30th Ave SW and SW Yancy St will be closed at SW Avalon Way. Local access will be maintained from SW Genesse St and 28th Ave SW. Pedestrian access will be maintained through the work zone and crews will set up No Parking signs.

6:21 AM: Good morning! One incident of note so far this morning that was clearing when we were at the scene just before the top of the hour, covered separately here, a crash on southbound California just south of Admiral.
Otherwise: It’s spring-break week for Seattle Public Schools (and Vashon too), so traffic should be lighter. More notes as the week begins:
OVERNIGHT SB HIGHWAY 99 CLOSURE NORTH OF DOWNTOWN: This week, for each of four nights starting tonight, 10 pm-5 am, the closure will be southbound, between Valley and Thomas Streets.
WHAT’S UP WITH THE TUNNEL PROJECT/VIADUCT-CLOSURE PLAN? Hear for yourself during this morning’s 9:30 am City Council briefing.
MARINERS’ GAME TONIGHT: SODO evening alert – M’s vs. Rangers, 7:10 pm at The Safe.
6:05 PM: Thanks for the tips – westbound Genesee is closed just east of Avalon because a truck trailer’s load spilled.
6:28 PM: Just went by. Still blocked but traffic is getting by both ways, alternating, with SPD directing.
7 PM: Via Twitter, SDOT says it may take a few hours for this to be cleaned up so the westbound lane can reopen.
8:05 PM: Added that photo from Daniel, who says he saw it happen: “Truck driver attempted to go up the hill, failed, rocked the truck and the load of bricks came out.” He says police told him the driver was cited.
10:23 PM: Thanks for the updates – Genesee is open again both ways.

7 AM: Good morning – no incidents in/from West Seattle so far. What you need to know otherwise:
WATER TAXI NOW 7 DAYS A WEEK: The spring/summer schedule starts today (and remember the free-rides-all-day celebration on Sunday). The new schedule adds weekends and Friday/Saturday nights in time for the …
MARINERS’ HOME OPENER: Tonight at Safeco Field, 7:10 pm vs. the A’s.
SPRING BREAK NEXT WEEK: Seattle Public Schools are out next week (Vashon, too).
520 BRIDGE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND … so the I-90 bridge will be busier. (520 is being readied for a partial opening of the new bridge to vehicle traffic starting next week.)
8:14 AM UPDATE: Just getting word of trouble on northbound 99 at King Street – a crash is blocking the right lane.
8:57 AM UPDATE: SDOT says the crash has cleared, but the 3-mile backup will take a while to ease.
Seattle Public Utilities has a cleanup plan for Saturday that might affect traffic on Dumar Way:
SPU will perform routine ditch and culvert cleaning beginning on the 1700 block of Dumar Way SW [map] in West Seattle on Saturday, April 9 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Maintenance crews will be progressively cleaning along Dumar Way SW, with a single lane closure shifting in conjunction with their workflow. Traffic will be impacted in the area. SPU has scheduled this work on a weekend to reduce traffic congestion. Expect traffic and bus delays.

As we first reported back in January, dozens of nighttime closures are ahead for the Fauntleroy Expressway end of the West Seattle Bridge, as SDOT begins the year-delayed re-replacement of 600+ earthquake-safety bearing pads.
This afternoon, the city announced that the first closure is expected to be the night of April 25th. Read on for the rest of the announcement:

6:58 AM: No incidents in or from West Seattle so far this morning.
7:23 AM: Since it’s still quiet, some reminders:
-Overnight closures on 99 north of downtown continue tonight, 10 pm-5 am, between the Battery Street Tunnel and Valley Street. The full list of closures for the rest of this week and the next two weeks is here.
-The West Seattle Water Taxi‘s 7-days-a-week spring/summer schedule starts Friday, with a free-rides-all-day celebration on Sunday.

(Screengrab from SDOT cam, before SFD left the scene)
5:49 PM: Thanks for the tips: A crash is blocking the left two lanes of the eastbound high bridge.
5:57 PM: Multiple tips note it’s backing up the westbound bridge too.
6:18 PM: And if you’re headed west on the Fauntleroy end of the bridge, there’s a stall blocking one lane by Walking on Logs.
6:39 PM: Both scenes are now clear.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:27 AM: Good morning – the big issue right now on area outbound routes is eastbound I-90. A police investigation has the main lanes closed; eastbound traffic is using the express lanes only. That’s backing up northbound I-5, including the stretch to which you exit from the West Seattle Bridge.
Otherwise – the Viaduct is back to normal after yesterday’s crab-truck crash. But remember the overnight closures on NB 99 continuing north of downtown – 10 pm-5 am, nightly through Thursday night, and then the next two weeks bring overnight closures on SB 99, again north of downtown – if you travel that stretch during those hours, get the details here.
6:48 AM: All lanes of eastbound I-90 have just reopened, according to an e-mail alert from WSDOT.
(TOPLINE: As of 8:29, six hours after the truck full of frozen crab went sideways, the Viaduct is fully open again)
A crash is blocking the right lane on the NB SR 99 Viaduct after S Royal Brougham Way. Expect delays. pic.twitter.com/kyB1qrVrKe
— seattledot (@seattledot) April 4, 2016
2:54 PM: That crash has just led to a followup alert that the NB Alaskan Way Viaduct is “subject to closure,” so don’t head that way for a while. Metro is routing 120, 125, and the C Line off NB 99 for now, too.
3 PM UPDATE: Here’s the view from the other side, thanks to a reader who texted us (we’re at 206-293-6302, 24/7):
And another view, texted from a back-seat passenger of someone who was on the Viaduct:
Again, while the photos show left-lane traffic getting by, SDOT has warned that both lanes are “subject to closure,” so an alternate route remains your best bet. Here’s the “live” view:

3:24 PM UPDATE: Tow trucks have arrived.
3:45 PM UPDATE: The southbound lanes also are being closed, says SPD, while they work to right the truck.
4:11 PM UPDATE: Southbound 99 has JUST reopened. Check the “live” view above for an update on northbound – the truck’s been pulled upright, for starters.
4:35 PM: Thanks to the reader who sent this video showing items falling from the truck to the surface below The Viaduct:
SDOT’s latest tweet, meantime: “We’re currently off-loading the truck and will then tow it. Once the structure is deemed safe lanes will reopen.” P.S. Regional media reports the boxes falling off the truck are filled with frozen crab.
4:47 PM: And WSDOT has just tweeted that the truck is being towed. It’s been about two hours since the wreck. (added) You can’t see it in the current “live” view above but other views show MANY boxes left behind, so northbound is going to be out of commission a while longer.
4:59 PM: Thanks to the reader who texted a view showing exactly what we just mentioned:
5:30 PM: This update from SPD Blotter says it’s been determined the Viaduct does *not* have any structural damage as a result of this, and so it’ll be able to reopen once all the debris are cleared. SPD also verifies that the cargo was frozen crab. (Another side note – it’s been a little more than a year since the infamous fish-truck crash; that too happened around 2:30 pm, but it was on SB 99, not NB.)
6 PM: Northbound 99 is still closed at the crash scene. We’ll continue updating until it reopens.
6:37 PM: One lane of NB 99 has just reopened. The right lane will remain closed TFN because of guardrail damage, says WSDOT.
6:47 PM: Metro says Rapid Ride C and Routes 120 and 125 are back on their regular routes using the Viaduct.
8:29 PM: Six hours after the crash, SDOT just announced that NB 99 is fully open again.
8:45 PM: … with this postscript:
UPDATE: We'll briefly close the NB Viaduct again to get the semi & trailer off. Should happen in the next 30 minutes.

6:07 AM: Good morning! Welcome to the first Monday in April. Notes for today and beyond:
FERRY ALERT: 7:30 am-3 pm daily, today through Thursday, WSF warns of possible service delays on the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route because of work being done on a Vashon slip, explained as “dependent on the tides and must be completed during this time period.”
LAST WEEK OF WATER TAXI’S WINTER SCHEDULE: 7-day-a-week operations start this Friday; two days later, it’s the special ride-free-all-day celebration on Sunday.
WHO’S ON SPRING BREAK: Highline Public Schools, the district immediately south of Seattle (including White Center and Burien), is out all week; Seattle Public Schools and the Vashon Island School District have spring break next week.
VIADUCT CLOSURE? No start date yet, according to the WSDOT tunnel-machine update published here last Friday.
8:31 AM: One more note – tonight through Thursday night, WSDOT plans to close northbound 99 between the Battery Street Tunnel and Valley Street (lower Queen Anne) 10 pm-5 am nightly. So if you’re headed northbound from here on 99 during those hours, you’ll have to exit by Western.
8:46 AM: Josh sends word via Twitter that northbound Delridge is backed up to Kenyon. No word of crashes so we’re not sure about the cause yet.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:29 AM: Good morning and welcome to April. The day begins with a transit alert – a crash at 3rd/Seneca has Metro routing the C Line, 120, and 56 off Seneca between 1st and 3rd. SDOT says the crash is blocking one southbound lane.
6:31 AM: And just like that, Metro has now sent an alert saying those routes are all back to normal.
9:26 AM: Reminder for next week – the parochial schools that were out on break this week will be back to school; the Highline district just south of West Seattle will be on break. (Seattle and Vashon public schools are out the week of April 11th.)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:21 AM: Good morning – welcome to the last day of March. No incidents in/from West Seattle so far.
AVALON/YANCY/30TH/ANDOVER PROJECT: As of yesterday afternoon, crews on this pedestrian-safety project had closed Andover at Avalon.
7:54 AM: Matt says via Twitter that lower Spokane St. is jammed east of the low bridge but isn’t seeing why; no incidents that we’re seeing logged, either.
8:46 AM: Crash reported at Olson/Myers – one south/westbound lane of Olson is blocked.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:50 AM: Good morning. Notes so far:
PIONEER SQUARE INVESTIGATION: If your commute takes you through/to Pioneer Square, note that SDOT reports 2nd is closed between Yesler and Washington for a police investigation (two people shot, one killed).
YANCY/AVALON/30TH SAFETY PROJECT: Work began on Tuesday, with 30th closed at Avalon.
SOUND TRANSIT 3 COMMENT TIME: The monthlong comment period has begun for the Sound Transit 3 draft plan made public last Thursday (including light rail to West Seattle in 2033). You’re invited to share comments via this survey, and a community meeting at West Seattle High School is set for 5:30 pm April 26th. The final plan will be approved this summer and go to voters in November.
7:01 AM: JayDee texted to say the 56 is running 25 minutes late.
8:43 AM: Metro says bus operation downtown in the aforementioned investigation zone is back to normal. See the comments for discussion of Admiral bus woes – we don’t know whether they have anything to do with what had been happening downtown.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:16 AM: Good morning – no incidents so far in/from West Seattle and vicinity. As noted yesterday, it’s spring-break week for some private schools (primarily faith-based).
8:26 AM: Work has started on the Avalon/Yancy/30th Safety Project. We just went past; 30th is closed at Avalon – no effect on Avalon so far, though.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:03 AM: Good morning – we start with these reminders:
FIRST WEEKDAY OF C LINE’S NEW ROUTE: Metro’s service change on Saturday was the start of a new route for the C Line (see the map here), breaking it away from the D Line and sending it to South Lake Union. Here’s more info on that and the other Metro changes.
AVALON/YANCY/30TH/ANDOVER: SDOT announced late last week that this pedestrian-safety project could start as soon as today.
9:02 AM: Robert observed in comments that traffic seemed lighter this morning and wondered who might be out on spring break. Spot check of calendars confirms parochial schools are out this week; Seattle and Vashon public-school districts aren’t out until the week of April 11th, but Highline is out next week.
11:29 AM: We went by Yancy/Avalon (etc.) to check on that project. No work yet – but they’re clearly staging, as workers were clustered around one corner, conferring, with paperwork. Dry weather is expected as the week proceeds. Also noticed while we were out, City Light work on Alki Avenue just east of Alki Point.
5:34 PM: Thanks to the caller who just let us know about a crash on West Marginal Way SW. It’s in the 3800 block, according to the SFD log, just south of the bridge; the caller says it appears the driver hit a tree on the southbound side, and a private ambulance is on scene. We’re on our way to check it out.
6:02 PM: The wrecked car is wrapped around a tree and not in travel lanes; police say the driver had gotten himself out before they arrived, and was taken to a hospital to be checked out. Besides totaling the car, he took out a few traffic signs.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:47 AM: Good morning – no incidents in/from West Seattle so far.
SODO RALLY THIS AFTERNOON: If you commute through the stadium zone, reminder that presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has a 4 pm Safeco Field rally, in advance of tomorrow’s Democratic caucuses.
METRO SERVICE CHANGE TOMORROW: One more reminder that Metro’s periodic “service change” is tomorrow, and this is the one that breaks up Rapid Ride C and D, with C going to South Lake Union from hereon out. Find the Metro info is here (and some additional info from the city here).
AVALON/YANCY/30TH PROJECT UPDATE: If you missed this update last night, work on the pedestrian-safety project for this multi-point intersection could start as soon as Monday.
7:32 AM: The Issaquah is out of service on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry run – repairs needed.
7:54 AM UPDATE: Thanks for the texts. The boat breakdown temporarily took the Fauntleroy dock out of service but WSF says it’s open again now.
8:03 AM: Also, as noted in comments, the F-V-S ferry run is down to 2 boats TFN.
11:14 AM: Update on the ferry status, from WSF: “The Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route is on a two boat schedule for the remainder of the day. The next three sailings from Fauntleroy to Vashon are: 11:40 am, 12:25 pm, and 1:20 pm. The next two sailings from Fauntleroy to Southworth are: 11:40 am and 12:25 pm. The next three sailings from Vashon to Fauntleroy are: 11:50 am, 12:45 pm and 1:45 pm. The next two sailings from Southworth to Vashon and Fauntleroy are: 11:20 am, and 12:25 pm. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
12:47 PM: WSF says the run’s now back to three boats.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:07 AM: As we get going for Thursday, the aftermath of last night’s one-car crash on Admiral Way between 49th and Garlough [map] is still having some effect on traffic, according to SDOT. Metro says buses are back to normal but SDOT mentions a lane closure. We covered the 10:50 pm crash here, including the power outage that affected more than 4,000 homes/businesses at its peak (over now). If you find Admiral fully open before we report it, please let us know, when you can do so safely (from a bus, a passenger seat, after you get where you’re going, etc.) – 206-293-6302 text or voice – thank you.
8 AM: We just went through and confirmed Admiral is fully open, no leftover crews, etc.
9:50 AM: Crash on northbound 99 near the stadiums:
UPDATE: The right lane has been reopened on NB SR 99 Viaduct at S King St. Long residual delays. pic.twitter.com/l0lyWGine1

6:12 AM: Good morning. No incidents in or from West Seattle so far. A few notes:
SCHOOL’S OUT EARLY TODAY: Today is an early-release day (two hours) for Seattle Public Schools, which shifts the times you’ll see flashing beacons, buses, biking/walking students, etc., this afternoon.
ADDED POLITICAL RALLY FRIDAY: If you commute through SODO – note that presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced last night he’s coming back to Seattle Friday for a Safeco Field rally (4 pm).
METRO CHANGES START SATURDAY: Another reminder that Saturday brings Metro’s next “service change,” including the RapidRide C and D Lines separating, with the C Line route ending in South Lake Union. See all the Metro info here.
P.S. For downtown workers/commuters – as of right now, the #ManInTree incident downtown continues. SDOT is tracking nearby lane/road closures.
8:11 AM: Multiple reports of general slowness.
8:39 AM: Still (as at least one commenter affirms) nothing specific to blame for this – just overall regional backups. The morning’s incidents are all in areas that don’t usually have any sort of direct effect on outbound traffic from here.
12:12 PM: If you haven’t heard, #ManInTree was down safely before noon, after about 25 hours. So that part of downtown should be back to something resembling normal traffic.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:12 AM: Good morning and welcome to Tuesday – no travel trouble spots reported in or from our area right now.
METRO SERVICE CHANGE SATURDAY: Time for daily reminders that Saturday is Metro’s next “service change,” and this is the one with a big change for RapidRide – the C and D Lines separate, with the C Line route going to South Lake Union. All the Metro info is here.
‘EARLY RELEASE DAY’ WEDNESDAY: Also of note – tomorrow is the next “early release day” for Seattle Public Schools, two hours earlier than usual.
6:19 AM: There’s a fire response at 9421 18th SW – we’ll be covering separately.
7 AM: The fire response is clearing. One other reminder for today – presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is in the area, for afternoon/evening events in Everett, Medina, and Rainier Beach.
(SCROLL DOWN for updates on traffic effects of Vice Presidential visit)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:07 AM: Good morning! The first Monday of spring is under way (and rainy). Notes for today:
WASHINGTON STATE FERRIES: The system is now on its spring schedule, which began Sunday.
VICE PRESIDENTIAL VISIT: VP Joe Biden is coming to Seattle today for an event with Sen. Patty Murray as well as a visit to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Since that means potential traffic effects when he’s in transit – for times, the Boeing Field VIP advisory is usually the best source; it cites a window of roughly 10:30 am-3:40 pm, “subject to change.”
10:24 AM: Preps are under way as the Vice President’s arrival nears. Remember that the West Seattle Bridge exits by/to I-5 close for the motorcade. WSDOT is providing updates via Twitter:
Some significant traffic impacts are expected within the next hour when @VP lands in #Seattle – if possible, delay non-essential trips.
— WSDOT Traffic (@wsdot_traffic) March 21, 2016
We’ll update once we hear he’s on the ground and on the move.
11:18 AM: Regional media says he’s arrived.
11:45 AM: Northbound Battery Street Tunnel is closed because of a crash – not related to the VP’s visit; he’s reported to have now arrived downtown, via I-5.
3:02 PM: VP Biden is at Fred Hutch – arriving later than planned, so we don’t know what that means to the rest of his schedule – but that means the next leg of his journey will be to Boeing Field.
At @fredhutch, @vp joins @PattyMurray for tour and to hear about treating cancer through immunotherapy pic.twitter.com/rIi5nvBOz9
— Meghan Dubyak (@Dubyak44) March 21, 2016
Be mindful of freeway ramp closures from the West Seattle Bridge, again.
4:50 PM: The VP’s late-starting Fred Hutch visit is reported to be wrapping up.
5:20 PM: WSDOT is reporting I-5 closures – so the motorcade is or will shortly be on the move.

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)
6:35 AM: Happy Friday! Just checked; no incidents in our area or on outbound routes, so far.
6:53 AM: Metro reminds us via Twitter that this is Transit Driver Appreciation Day.
7:15 AM: We mentioned earlier this week that some high-profile campaigning is planned here in the week ahead, with the Democratic caucuses coming up one week from tomorrow (March 26th), and that tends to mean potential traffic effects. Last night, the Bernie Sanders campaign announced he’s headed this way, for a Sunday (March 20th) rally at KeyArena. Hillary Clinton is coming to the area Tuesday but has only announced a private fundraiser in Medina. And Vice President Joe Biden is due here Monday, with stops reported to include a Sen. Patty Murray fundraiser and a visit to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
