UPDATE: SUV-semitruck crash in Admiral District

crunch1

6:02 AM: Thanks for the tips about a helicopter over The Admiral District about half an hour ago. It was *not* a police search, but just a media helicopter checking out a traffic situation. We’ve talked to officers at the scene of a crash that happened just before 5 am on southbound California just south of Admiral and is now being cleared – an SUV crashed into the back of a semitruck. Police say one person was taken to the hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening.

6:37 AM: Photo substituted for our original cameraphone photo above, and second one added above this line as semi was towed.

12:10 PM: The truck driver’s wife messaged us to say that while her husband, who was in the trailer when the SUV hit it, wasn’t hurt, police told them the driver fled and the injured person was one of multiple passengers. We’ll try to find out from police if the driver was ever found.

And I got woke up at 5:30 for this? Must be a slow morning, traffic wise.

Serious for a rear end accident, we are still sleeping

How does one rear end a semi at 5am on CA Ave?! There are like three cars on the street at that hour. Whateva! Hope everyone is ok.

It’s one of those “could have been MUCH worse” accidents.  That loading ramp was at a level where it went right through the passenger side of the windshield.  Had their been a passenger, or had the driver been a bit further over to the right, that could have easily been a rather gruesome fatality.

I’m not sure how the driver managed to do that.  The truck looks like it was parked against the curb, and it was a parked white truck in a well lit area.  At 5 am, I wonder if the SUV driver fell asleep.  That would be a lot better explanation than “I just didn’t see it.”

I’m willing to bet a phone was involved.

I saw the chopper from Alaska while out walking my dog at 5am and wondered what was going on. Mystery solved! Can always count on WSB!

now…why would the driver flee, and leave his passengers in the wrecked car? All night drinking binge, and falling asleep? I’m sure that the registration of said car is being looked into, and owner will be found. But…what a putz…more to this than meets the eye?

Sorry, comment time is over.
