If you know someone who’s been procrastinating about applying for the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Scholarship Program – tell her it’s now or never! Just two days till the deadline, which is coming up this Wednesday. Scholarship money for the Queen is $2,000, and $1,000 for each Princess – plus you get to hang out with pirates, mingle at events, ride on a float, representing West Seattle around the region … a one-of-a-kind role, since no other Seattle community has its own traveling parade float any more:
(West Seattle Grand Parade 2009 Hi-Yu Float photo by Christopher Boffoli)
Miss Hi-Yu eligibility is outlined in our original publication of the announcement, which also includes links to the application form (see the announcement, with links, here), but if you have a question, you can e-mail misswestseattle@hiyu.com.
Just a few more weeks for young women to apply to enter this year’s Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu competition (photo from our coverage of the 2009 coronation). You’ve heard “it’s not a beauty pageant, it’s a scholarship competition” before – it’s truly the case here, and in addition to having college money up for grabs, there’s also the chance to represent West Seattle at appearances around the region – we remain the ONLY community that still has its own parade float, and the Hi-Yu court travels with it. There’s $2,000 scholarship money for the Queen and $1,000 for each Princess; March 31 is the deadline to apply – you can get the form here (also download the accompanying letter here). For eligibility info, check out our previous report.
From tonight’s West Seattle Hi-Yu meeting – Jim Edwards just sent that cameraphone photo of the official drawing for this year’s float. We were there two months ago when the theme was chosen, “Dreams Do Come True” – the drawing shown tonight comes from the concepts displayed that night by young Hi-Yu enthusiasts, including Junior Court members:
Tonight’s meeting also was scheduled to include a decision on this year’s button design – we’ll let you know when we get word of that. You’ll see the finished float in this year’s West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade on July 24 (if you don’t happen to get to one of the earlier parades to which Hi-Yu travels to represent West Seattle, which is the ONLY Seattle neighborhood still to have its own parade float – others have festivals, none have floats). Our archived Hi-Yu coverage is here – including the recent story about the opening of application season for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu (qualifications, forms and info here).
That’s our video from last July, as West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Queen Georgia Mitchell and Princesses Kelly Nealson and Veronica Pupava were coronated. Who will get the crowns at the next coronation? The process has begun, now that applications are being accepted. Coordinator Shirley Enebrad forwarded two important forms for anyone interested; the application (here) and the accompanying letter (here). The application form fully describes qualifications and expectations – but here are the key points:
Applicant must be a female 17 years of age and not have reached her 23rd birthday by August 1st. Applicant can never have been married and must be single (not engaged) at the time of coronation. These limits are based on the Seafair rules, since the Hi-Yu Queen will be participating in the Seafair Scholarship Program the following year. She must be attending high school or a high school graduate; attending school, working in, or a resident of West Seattle. The West Seattle area includes the Alki Peninsula to the Burien City limits. This is a varied border, within the following zip codes: 98106, 98116, 98126, 98136, 98146. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact the organization by e-mail: misswestseattle@hiyu.com
Prizes include scholarship $. The deadline to enter is March 31st.
At last night’s meeting, West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival leaders decided to extend the deadline for this year’s button-design contest through the end of this month. Hi-Yu’s Deena Mahn tells us they’ll now be judging entries at the February meeting, and they’ve added an e-mail option, if you want to send in a suggested design that way. The theme, as chosen in December, is “Dreams Do Come True” (see the art concepts in our coverage of January’s Hi-Yu meeting); last year’s button is at left – and like its designer, Kyle Jonson, this year’s winner gets to ride in the West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade in July (there’s a $25 prize for the winning design too – and all ages are welcome to enter). The design needs to be 2 1/2″ wide; e-mail your creation to wshiyu@yahoo.com or postal-mail it to: West Seattle Hi-Yu, PO Box 16130, Seattle, WA 98116.
A week and a half ago, we brought you first word of the theme chosen for next year’s West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival float, “Dreams Do Come True.” (The art above is from the winning presentation, details here.) Tonight, Hi-Yu’s Deena Mahn sends word of the next step: You’re invited to enter the contest to turn the new theme into next year’s fundraising Hi-Yu button! Here’s the official announcement:
Looking for an easy and creative way to show your community pride? A fun winter break project for the kids?
West Seattle Hi-Yu is kicking off the annual button design contest. This year’s theme is West Seattle Hi-Yu “Dreams Do Come True.” This year’s float design will depict a fanciful fairy-tale theme; think castles, rainbows and unicorns. The winning button will be chosen at the general membership meeting by popular vote on January 4, 2010, 6:30 p.m. at St John the Baptist Church Hall. Previous years’ buttons may be viewed at
www.hiyu.com/all_buttons.asp.All button designs should be in final size, which is 2 ½”. Hi-Yu welcomes entries from all ages!
The winner receives a $25.00 check and will ride in the West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade in July. Please send entries by mail to West Seattle Hi-Yu, PO Box 16130, Seattle, WA 98116. Deadline is January 2nd, 2010.
THANK YOU for supporting your community festival.
Deena also shared a photo of last year’s winner, Kyle Jonson, riding in the July 2008 parade, along with the image of his winning button design:
By the way, if you’re ever looking for a WSB Hi-Yu story, look for the West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival coverage category in the list toward the bottom of the sidebar, or bookmark this link (newest story will always come up first)
Last night’s West Seattle Hi-Yu membership meeting was an occasion for both holiday celebration and serious business: Choosing the float theme for next year. West Seattle is the only neighborhood in the city that still has its own parade float traveling the region representing the community; before all that happens during a long season of parades, the year’s theme must be chosen – then the float’s designed and built. Twelve potential themes were proposed at Monday night’s meeting in the fellowship hall at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church; Hi-Yu members at the meeting each got three votes, and then the top three votegetters went up for a runoff. The final three: A music-focused float themed “Rockin’ the West Side”; an unnamed concept involving spaceships and aliens with a slogan along the lines of “Every Visitor Is Welcome in West Seattle”; and a fanciful fairytale landscape themed “Dreams Do Come True” – which won, hands down. Incoming Junior Court Princess Kaitlin (above) presented the idea, a collaboration with Bianca and Isabella – here’s a closer look at some of the components sketched out for the concept:
Look for “Dreams Do Come True” next parade season – we’ll keep you posted when float development revs up! Also from Monday night’s Hi-Yu meeting: The float undercarriage is almost ready for full winter storage; it’s being kept at a local tow yard. … Plaques and trophies from the awards won by this past season’s much-honored “How Sweet It Is” float were given to individual royalty members by request – as Hi-Yu president Tim Winston put it, they are more meaningful as personal mementos that way, than if they went into a box for storage on behalf of the entire organization. And Hi-Yu fundraiser ornament sales have been a hit – only a dozen are left (here’s how to get one). So, want to propose a float idea and/or vote on it next year? All you have to do is join Hi-Yu – membership dues support the summer festival as well as the float program representing West Seattle around the region – here’s the application.
West Seattle Hi-Yu may be a summer festival, but its volunteers don’t take a break in winter – it’s always time to look ahead to next year, including raising money with the holiday ornament sale. Hi-Yu vice president Deena Mahn shares the photo and info: “West Seattle Hi-Yu is once again selling beautiful hand-blown glass holiday ornaments. Our 2009 ornaments were designed and hand blown especially for Hi-Yu by Christopher Sternberg-Powidzki of Glasshouse Studio in Pioneer Square. These ornaments will make great gifts for your family, friends, teachers, clients, co-workers, employees and yourself! The proceeds of the sale will go directly to the Miss West Seattle scholarship program, building a float that represents the West Seattle Community in parades throughout Puget Sound, and various community events.” The ornaments are selling for $20, and you can reserve one (or more!) now by calling 935-6517. Deena says you’ll also be able to buy ornaments at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market on Sunday, Nov. 22, and at the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle Pancake Breakfast Dec. 5th (you’ll find both of those events on the WSB Events calendar page, too).
Unless you’re personally involved with the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival, you may not realize that its volunteers are at work for months before the peak summer events, and months afterward – pretty much all year round. But parade season is ending after tomorrow, and Hi-Yu President Tim Winston sent these photos with this update tonight:
We are wrapping up a very successful parade season with the Issaquah Salmon Days Parade, Saturday at 10 am.
This will be the last outing for our “How Sweet It Is” candy-themed float. It has won awards in 7 parades (out of 8 where we are eligible).
Thanks to John at GT Towing who has been storing our float.
BTW, Monday starts the new season for Hi-Yu. I am president again for the next year and most of the board is continuing.
Our major project for the fall is a new, covered float trailer. We are looking for a few major sponsors that will be recognized with advertising on the new trailer. A photo of a trailer like the one we plan to order is attached.
Thank you!
Tim Winston
President
West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival
The West Seattle Hi-Yu Float was fairly early in the running order at the Seafair Torchlight Parade (which hasn’t ended yet – at least not for those of us on the southern end of 4th Avenue), and it was preceded by a banner announcing it’s the winner of the Princess Award. Last year’s float won a Torchlight Parade award too – the Smile Award. We’ll add video of the float in tonight’s parade when we’re back at HQ. ADDED 11:15 PM: Also congratulations to Sivona Lingle, who represented Hi-Yu in the Miss Seafair competition – she came in third runner-up. “West Seattle Hi-Yu is very proud of her!” Carol Winston tells WSB. ADDED 12:20 AM: Float video. A few more parade visuals to come, as we check our cameras – sorry we don’t have video/pix of Sivona and Alki Community rep Keili Geller in the pre-parade Miss Seafair competition, but will add links to any we find. ADDED 1:26 AM: Here’s the KIRO video of the Miss Seafair announcement – starting with Sivona being announced as Third Princess. (Full results are listed on the Seafair website.) And our clip of the kids (including a West Seattle boy – though we have to find out from his mom if he’s visible in our video) who won the wooden-hydro contest, dragging them behind their bikes:
KIRO has the :30 clip of this from the parade contest online; see it here.
ADDED SUNDAY AFTERNOON: From David, dad of Zachary, the local hydro-contest winner, a couple photos (by the way, that’s him about seven seconds into our video, his mom Lisa says):
From a note he shared, which was also going to friends and family:
We built the hydros from 1″ plywood; these kids were randomly selected from 100+ entries. 10 kids (including Zach) won free bikes, which were donated by the Seafair Clowns and some other funding source (I heard mixed answers…McLendon’s? Boeing?). We assembled at 5:30, got our rides set up, waited on Broad St. for around an hour, and then merged into the fair, right behind Teatro ZinZanni.
… I have one suggestion for any Seattle resident: FIND SOME WAY TO GET IN THIS PARADE. It’s an amazing experience to walk through the thousands of people and realize how many you never get to know, and they’re living their lives in the same town, and they’re the same as you, and they’re very, very different. It grounds you in the community, and makes you feel more connected to this city, than any civic event I’ve ever attended.
We didn’t get a good photo of West Seattle’s Most Famous Politician in the parade, but David (also mentioning that even the dignitaries were accessible and friendly) did – just before the parade, anyway (the mayor was in a rain jacket by the time his car passed us):
One last note – one of the parade’s most stirring sights each year is a huge U.S. flag carried by Coast Guardsmen and Coast Guard Auxiliary members. They’ve put up a YouTube clip:
Before tomorrow night’s Seafair Torchlight Parade downtown (tip from veteran parade fan, you need to stake out your spot along 4th Avenue early in the day), the new Miss Seafair will be announced, and two West Seattle women are in the running. Sivona Lingle (right) represents the West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival, and Keili Geller (left) represents the Alki Community. Keili is a junior majoring in communications at the University of Hawaii Manoa (Honolulu) and attended Hope Lutheran School in West Seattle through 8th grade; in 2007 she graduated from Bellevue’s Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart High School. Sivona is currently attending the University of Arizona; she was Hi-Yu Senior Court Queen 2007-2008 (since many Miss Seafair events run concurrent with Hi-Yu commitments, the festival enters its preceding year’s queen; 2008-2009 queen Margo Femiano will represent Hi-Yu in Miss Seafair next year) . Regardless of who is coronated as Miss Seafair tomorrow night (see all the participants here), they’ll all be riding in the parade, where you also will see the West Seattle Hi-Yu float – decorated with lights, since this is an evening parade. P.S. If you’re going to the parade, note that an extra King County Water Taxi run has been added, 11:30 pm, from downtown to West Seattle.
The coronation just ended at West Seattle High School’s theater – big crowd – lively production – and the new Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu is Georgia Mitchell (center). Princesses are Veronica Pupava (left) and Kelly Nealson.
ADDED 11:50 PM: Video as the Queen announcement was made at the end of the 2 1/2-hour event – the voices off-camera are first, previous Queen Margo Femiano, and then emcee Elisa Jaffe from KOMO TV – as you’ll hear/see, the new queen had quite the cheering section:
Other candidates competing tonight were Kelsey Bills and Julia Hodges. Yet more to be added, including touching tributes to JB Webster, the Hi-Yu volunteer, Seafair Commodore and West Seattle real-estate agent whose sudden death shocked the community earlier this year. ADDED 3:51 AM: Read on for the rest of the story, including more video clips:Read More

WEST SEATTLE HI-YU SENIOR COURT CORONATION: Who will ride on the Hi-Yu float in next year’s parades (among other commitments and privileges)? Tonight, the new West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court is chosen in an event with entertainment, excitement and suspense — 7 pm, West Seattle High School Theater. Tickets are available at the door ($10 adults/$5 students and all children 12/under). KOMO TV’s Elisa Jaffe emcees. (Here’s our coverage of last Friday’s Junior Court Coronation.)
SUSTAINABLE WEST SEATTLE: 7 pm at Camp Long; main presentation tonight, the group’s website says, will be: “Robert Burns of Envision Homes … giving an informative nuts and bolts presentation about budget conscious and low-maintenance rainwater catchment and green roofs.”
SOUTH PARK MEETING: Seattle Police plan to meet with South Park community members at 7 tonight to talk about the Sunday morning attack that killed one woman and seriously wounded another. South Park Community Center (map).
LOW TIDE: Good tidewalking conditions the next four days – with a minus 3.0 at 10 am today – then a little lower tomorrow and Wednesday – here’s the chart.
At Hiawatha within the past hour, the new West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival Junior Court was coronated — they’re seen here with their predecessors — with flowers, left to right (second, fourth, and sixth from left in the photo), 9-year-old Princess Isabella Carufel, 9-year-old Queen Kailin Jo Alexander Spencer, and 10-year-old Princess Kaitlin Morgan. We’ll add more info about them and a few more photos in a bit. Look for them at tomorrow’s West Seattle Grand Parade, and at the Hi-Yu Community Breakfast at the American Legion Hall on Sunday, as well as the Senior Court Coronation on Monday night at West Seattle High School. ADDED 4:05 PM: Another photo — the entire lineup of the previous Junior Court and all eight of this year’s candidates:
Forgive us for not having our left-to-right ID correct but we do want to give them all a shoutout: In addition to the newly crowned Junior Queen and Princesses, the candidates also included, in alphabetical order, Sadie Botuchis, Tess Carden, Jaeley Helmstetler, Caroline Rouse and Lindy Tongol. And of course a big congrats for a big year of excitement, to outgoing Junior Queen Zoe Mahn and Princesses Anna Fuller and Elyse Mitchell, and to Diane Szender, who coordinated the Junior Court process (and reminded everyone that next year’s applications will be out in May 2010, at the Hi-Yu website and here at WSB – thanks for the shoutout!).
DELRIDGE PLAYGROUND-BUILDING DAY: As previewed here last night. It’s been less than four months since first word that a new playground at Delridge Community Center could happen largely thanks to donated materials, time and labor, and today’s the day, with hundreds of volunteers on site.
“SAFETY CITATIONS”: 10-11 am, firefighters from Engine 29 will be on Alki looking for kids wearing their helmets properly – and they’ll get “safety citations” good for free Subway sandwiches!
HIAWATHA FUN FEST: Noon-3 today at Hiawatha Community Center – games, activities, prizes.
WEST SEATTLE HI-YU JUNIOR COURT CORONATION: During the Fun Fest, starting around 12:45 pm, the new Hi-Yu Junior Court will be announced and coronated (look for the stage on the east lawn @ Hiawatha).
FREE GUIDED ECO-HIKE: Once a month, the West Seattle-based Nature Consortium< offers a free guided hike through the West Duwamish Greenbelt, where it works on forest restoration, and today’s the day – 1 pm, meet at trailhead at 14th SW/SW Holly (here’s a map; RSVP if you can to lisa@naturec.org).
This group gathered at Hiawatha last night includes the first-ever West Seattle Volunteer Recognition recipients — Tim and Carol Winston of West Seattle Hi-Yu, youth mentor Marcus Stubblefield, co-chair Mike Dady of the North Delridge Neighborhood Council, presenters Erica Karlovits and Cindi Barker from the Southwest District Council (which co-sponsors WSVR with Delridge District Council and WSB), White Center Food Bank (among other organizations) volunteer Beth Grieser, Sustainable West Seattle‘s Bill Reiswig, and WestSide Baby‘s Nancy McDonnell. They received framed certificates and spirited applause during the announcement, made while the West Seattle Big Band took a quick break at the annual Hi-Yu Concert in the Park. From hereon out, Volunteer Recognition will happen twice a year – there are so many amazing people out there (these six were chosen from among 40 entries) that the supply of nominees we’ll never run low! More information about the recipients shortly – first, moments from the concert, starting with video of WSBB music (and the crowd):
We estimated the crowd at more than 200:
Fittingly for a family-friendly event, WestSide Baby was on hand – with reminders that this Sunday is the day to “Stuff the Bus” with diaper donations (10 am-2 pm at West Seattle Farmers’ Market)
And during another break in the music, the crowd heard from Hi-Yu royalty – the current Junior and Senior Court members, and Senior Court candidates (next Monday is the night you can watch to see who becomes the next Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu; the Junior Court is chosen this Friday; schedule here):
Now back to the Volunteer Recognition recipients. Read on for photos of each and the excerpts from the nominations that were read at last night’s event:Read More
Will it be a night for romping – like last year, when the music even had the littlest concertgoers on the move? The forecast promises clearing skies by showtime for tonight’s free West Seattle Hi-Yu Concert in the Park, 7 pm on the east lawn outside Hiawatha Community Center – b/y/o chair(s), blanket(s), picnic, friends/family … As always, the West Seattle Big Band is front and center. This year, a special feature: During the performance, the first West Seattle Volunteer Recognition recipients will be announced and honored — from dozens of nominations received, six were chosen (the committee says there were so many GREAT nominations, it was a tough job!). WSVR is a new program presented by the Southwest and Delridge District Councils and WSB, and another round’s coming up later this year. See you tonight at Hiawatha (which is also where the Hi-Yu Junior Court Coronation happens this Friday – and TODAY is the deadline to enter – details and application here).
Just remembered we’d forgotten to mention breaking news we heard from West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival‘s Carol Winston during WS Summer Fest this afternoon — this year’s Hi-Yu float (shown above at WSSF on Friday) has won another award — “best float” at the Kent Cornucopia Days parade today. Third big award this season; you’ll get to see the float up close next Saturday in the West Seattle Grand Parade, presented by American Legion Post 160 (starts at California/Lander at 11 am and proceeds to the south end of The Junction). Meantime, lots of Hi-Yu events coming up in the next 2 weeks – Carol and husband Tim Winston, Hi-Yu president, just sent this comprehensive list:
7/13 – Monday, 7 pm, Fauntleroy Church, (Hi-Yu Senior Court) Candidate Essay Reading and Reception. This is a judged event, but open to the public. It would be great to have a large audience for the girls to stand before and read their essays.
7/14 – Tuesday, 7 pm, Hiawatha East Lawn, Concert in the Park (weather permitting). The West Seattle Big Band is always a hit. People should bring a picnic dinner and blanket and enjoy the music. Hopefully the weather will be nice.
Note on that – remember, the Southwest and Delridge District Councils along with WSB will be honoring the first West Seattle Volunteer Recognition recipients during the concert, so be there to give them a round of applause. Now, back to the list:
7/17 – Friday, 12-3 pm, Hiawatha East Lawn, Hiawatha Kids Fun Festival and Hi-Yu Junior Court Coronation. Lots of carnival games, face painting, refreshments, clowns, jump toys, on-stage children’s entertainment, etc. The Junior Court Coronation will take place at 12:45 on the main stage.
7/18 – Saturday, 11 am, (along California from) Lander-Edmunds Streets, American Legion Grand Parade. Come and see our award-winning float.
7/19 – Sunday, 9 am-noon, American Legion Hall, The Hi-Yu Community Breakfast. Always a great breakfast hosted by Don & Sheryl Bogie – open to the public. Suggested donation $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 12 and under.
7/20 – Monday, 7 pm, West Seattle High School Theater, Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Coronation. Tickets $10 for adults and $5 for all students and children 12 and under. Elisa Jaffe of KOMO 4 will be our MC for the evening. Come and see the young women who have been running for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu. The candidates will each perform a stage talent and give answers for both prepared and spontaneous questions. Nine cash awards donated by local businesses and individuals will be presented in addition to the $2,000 scholarship for the Queen and $1,000 scholarships to the Princesses.
7/25 – Saturday, 7:30 pm, Downtown Seattle, Seafair Torchlight Parade. Cheer on last year’s West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen, Sivona Lingle, at the Seafair Coronation and see the West Seattle float with its lighted decorations.
All proceeds from these events not only help pay for the expenses of the event, but go toward building our next float and for educational scholarships for the young women chosen to represent West Seattle.
And we’ll add a data point we cite often: West Seattle is the ONLY remaining neighborhood in the city that still has its own float, traveling to represent the area in spring/summer/fall presents. You’ll help literally keep West Seattle on the parade/festival map by supporting Hi-Yu.

Reporting for West Seattle Blog
There were princesses everywhere, just as would be expected, at last night’s White Rose Ceremony and Reception in Fauntleroy, part of the 75th annual West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival festivities.
Dressed in jewel-hued gowns, dining on cake, the current courts met the new Senior Court candidates and offered them a little entertainment, during a women-only event to celebrate Hi-Yu royalty past and present.
In the crowd were a dozen or more past Hi-Yu royalty, including Pam Storz, a princess in 1978, and Ella (then Vogelpohl) Engelking, who was Miss Congeniality in 1973.
Before you see it in the West Seattle Grand Parade on July 18, you should know the West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival float “How Sweet It Is” has been racking up awards elsewhere on the summertime community-parade circuit around Western Washington: Tim and Carol Winston from Hi-Yu just shared these photos from last weekend’s Port Orchard Fathoms O’Fun Parade, where it won the award displayed here by current Hi-Yu Queen Margo Femiano:
(The weekend before, the float won an award in the Marysville Strawberry Festival parade.) Margo’s close to the end of her reign, as are the rest of the Senior and Junior Court – here are two of the latter, Queen Zoe and Princess Elyse:
That brings us to two more items of Hi-Yu news: First, applications are still being taken for this year’s Junior Court. July 14 is the deadline; interviews and coronation are July 17. Download the official application form here. And you can meet current Junior and Senior Court members, as well as the Senior Court candidates tonight at the Hi-Yu White Rose Reception – a women-only event, Fauntleroy Church, 7 pm.
That’s the current West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival Junior Court – in a WSB photo from their coronation last July. Now that summer’s here again, it’s almost time to choose a new Junior Court – and if you know a girl who’d be interested, here’s the announcement Diane Szender just sent:
West Seattle Hi-Yu is seeking 2009-2010 Junior Court Candidates
Applications must be received by Tuesday, July 14th, 2009.
The West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival organization is seeking friendly, outgoing, community-oriented girls for the 2009-2010 Junior Court. Young ladies must be between 7 and 11 by Sept 1st of the year they run. The new court will represent West Seattle at many local events and travel with the float to other community parades and festivals.
You can download the Junior Court application by going here. And you can meet current royalty and Senior Court candidates at the upcoming White Rose Reception, June 30th at Fauntleroy Church, tickets on sale now (more info here).
That’s one of our photos from WSB coverage of last year’s West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival White Rose Reception (since then, of course, new courts have been chosen – check our Hi-Yu archive for all the coverage) – and Deena Mahn from Hi-Yu has just sent word about this year’s event:
West Seattle Hi-Yu cordially invites you to the 2009 White Rose Reception. This event is for women only and is a celebration of past and present Hi-Yu royalty and candidates. All are invited; festivities will begin at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 30th, at Fauntleroy Church, UCC, 9260 California Avenue SW. Come to share your Hi-Yu memories or to learn about our community festival. Past royalty are encouraged to wear or bring their sashes and memory scrapbooks. For tickets or information please call 935.5113 or visit our website.
Five of the six candidates for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival (meet all six here) posed for us on Seacrest Pier this morning as the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club Kids’ Fishing Derby was in its final moments, just yards away. Once again this year, brilliant sunshine for WSSC members to host a temporary fishing pond at the pier for kids 12 and under – we caught two catches on video:
The next scheduled Hi-Yu event is the American Legion Candidates’ Reception on June 11th; the Hi-Yu float, meantime, fresh off its award-winning Sequim appearance last weekend (WSB coverage here), was scheduled to be up north again today, at the Rhododendron Festival Parade in Port Townsend.
