UPDATE: Car fire near Hiawatha

5:30 PM: Thanks to the texter who sent the photo. SFD is on scene right now, responding to that vehicle fire in the 2900 block of (corrected) Walnut. They put it out quickly, we’re told – here’s another photo:

We’re checking on injuries.

6:19 PM: SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo says no one was hurt. Their investigator was not sent, so it apparently was not suspicious in orgin.

Looks like an early 70’s Porsche 911 Targa.

Is this the Porsche that was stolen from Alki the other night?

That was described as a Porsche Cayman

Porsches are prone to engine fires – I had one –  I carried a fire extinguisher at all times, only needed it once  but that saved the day and the car.

You are right! I saw a Porsche melted to the ground on San  Juan Island once. It burned completely. I had just seen it earlier at a lavender farm. It was shocking. The people were fine.

“2900 block of Hiawatha” – 2900 block of walnut, near haiwatha play field?

OMG.  I turned onto Admiral Way eastbound from Garlough behind this car around 4:30 PM.  Wanted to give him a thumbs-up for a cool vintage Porsche, but he turned right onto Cali before I could pull up beside him.  Probably 1970 or 1971 911-T Targa.  Def pre-1972 2.4L (no oil filler door plus other small clues), so would be carbureted.  As ‘J’ noted, fuel boil-over in carb floats after shutdown or braided fabric fuel line rupture onto very hot metal is a definite risk.  Especially in this hot weather.   Always prudent to carry a fire extinguisher in these older P-cars, as I did.

Sorry LJJ:  looks like a total loss to me, but I’m not an insurance adjuster.  Perhaps some parts can be salvaged.  Cars like this are typically insured by an “Agreed Value” policy from a specialty  insurer such as Haggerty.  Hopefully, the owner has kept that up to date and will be covered, but that doesn’t mitigate the pain of watching his treasured possession go up in flames.

I saw the car being hauled away at 1815.

That car is stunning. What a loss for him, thank goodness this didn’t happen in his garage.
