SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Swirling algae bloom

Thanks to Jamie Kinney for the aerial views of an algae bloom off Fauntleroy.

The state Ecology Department tracks these blooms and wants to hear about it if you spot one. Ecology also produces a periodic report on serial and surface surveys of the Sound (here’s the latest report).

These algae blooms are yet another reason to discourage lawns notorious for their run off of fertilizers.  When homeowners come around to how environmentally wasteful grass is and how beneficial trees are, maybe we can cease our obsession with our lawns and replace them with indigenous trees.

Sorry, comment time is over.
