West Seattle, Washington
16 Saturday
Scenes from both ends of West Seattle on Easter Sunday morning:
SUNRISE SERVICE AT THE BEACH: Thanks to Lynn Hall for the photo of this morning’s gathering at Alki Beach, where Admiral UCC, Alki UCC, and Fauntleroy UCC churches hold a joint sunrise service every Easter, rain or shine.
INDOOR EGG HUNT: And in South Delridge this morning, one of the last egg hunts of the year:
The Salvation Army invited kids into their gym for an egg hunt, followed by breakfast.
You can see our coverage of Saturday’s egg hunts here and here.
Toplines from the monthly Highland Park Action Committee meeting, last Wednesday night at Highland Park Improvement Club:
CRIME-TRENDS UPDATE: First up, Southwest Precinct Operations Lt. Ron Smith, with updates on Highland Park trends.
4:49 PM: Emergency responders are in the 10200 block of 47th SW and at Don Armeni after a report of someone in trouble in the water south of Fauntleroy. More to come.
4:53 PM UPDATE: The person is described as a “boarder” and has been picked up by a rescue boat, per scanner and what we can see from the road over the 47th SW location (the West Beach Condos).
4:57 PM UPDATE: The rescued person is now described by SFD as an “exhausted, non-injured windsurfer.”
5:30 PM UPDATE: The windsurfer was getting a ride home from police to a nearby address – did not need treatment – and responding units were being dismissed
Last weekend, we featured Sam‘s report on Highland Park Elementary playground progress. We received a followup, with photos, from Connie Wolf of the HPE PTA:
Over 100 adults and kids generously gave of their time (last) Sunday morning to move a mountain of play chips and prep the gravel under our new net climber. A huge THANK YOU to our school families and staff, community members, City Year, Pomegranate Design, and Bethany Community Church for turning a daunting task into a community-building celebration. All the credit for organizing the event and getting Phase One of our playground built goes to the volunteer group Highland Park Plays and especially Gretchen DeDecker (Seattle Public Schools Program Manager).
Up next – concrete work is wrapping up, and then we’ll finish getting the chips into the play area. The highly anticipated play structures will be ready for our students in April. We’re planning a Grand Opening Party on May 5th. Stay tuned for details!
Checking in on more high-school spring sports – fast-pitch-softball season is well under way. This past Friday afternoon at Southwest Athletic Complex, Chief Sealth International High School hosted West Seattle High School.
(Sealth’s Kentoria Taitai on the brink of scoring the team’s first run Friday)
Tough season so far for the Seahawks, who lost 18-2 and are still seeking their first win.
The Wildcats are 3-2 on the season. Up next for both teams, home games vs. Ingraham HS, both at SWAC (2801 SW Thistle) – Chief Sealth plays Monday at 4 pm, WSHS plays Wednesday at 4 pm. The regular season runs through early May.
When our area’s State Sen. Sharon Nelson announced last week that she would not run for re-election, the question immediately arose, who will run to succeed her? One seemingly natural successor, State Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon – who had been mentored by Nelson before he joined the Legislature eight years ago – has made his decision: He wants to stay in the House. His announcement today:
After much consideration and receiving much advice, I believe the place I can be the most effective for my district and the issues I care about is in the House of Representatives. I’ll be running for reelection to the House this year, not for the Senate.
2019 can be (and needs to be) a watershed year in the Washington State Legislature on fighting climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. There is great energy and leadership around climate priorities in the Senate right now, and staying in the House lets me focus on building momentum for climate and clean energy progress in our chamber. I’m also motivated to make progress in the House on gun safety, death penalty repeal, multimodal transportation infrastructure, restoring habitat for salmon and other endangered species, and fixing our upside-down tax code.
I also love the team-oriented culture of the House and want to remain a part of a great team, the House Democrats, that I know and love well. I’m confident that our district will choose a great new senator to represent us, who can make the 34th district proud and serve the Senate and the state well.
Thanks to all who provided advice and input as I made my decision. I’d be honored to have your support as I run for reelection.
The official filing period for legislative offices is in mid-May. Rep. Fitzgibbon is one of two State House representatives for the 34th District – which includes West Seattle, White Center, Vashon and Maury Islands, and part of Burien – along with Rep. Eileen Cody. He won re-election four years ago with 82 percent of the vote over another Democrat, Brendan Kolding; Cody and Nelson were both re-elected that year without opponents.
