(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

6:59 AM: Good morning! No incidents currently reported in or from West Seattle.

BIKE-TO-SCHOOL DAY: It’s happening today around Seattle.

EARLY DISMISSAL DAY: Seattle Public Schools are out two hours early today.

7:20 AM: Thanks to Kelly for first word of this – the Highland Park Way/West Marginal Way SW signal is flashing, and that’s backed up eastbound traffic all the way up the hill, and then some. Avoid.

7:26 AM: At left of Kelly’s photo, that’s an SDOT crew on scene, but the Traffic Operations Center didn’t have word of this until a moment ago.

If you haven’t already heard – tomorrow is Bike to School Day, as part of Bike Everywhere Month, so you’ll see more students on two wheels than usual. We know some schools are also planning special “bike trains,” and remember that elementaries start early, so you’ll see these “trains” in the 7 am vicinity.

P.S. What used to be called Bike to Work Day is now Bike Everywhere Day, and that’s coming up Friday, May 19th.

DEVELOPMENT SIGN CHANGE? Here’s the new format

Those big white-with-small-black-print signs that mark proposed development sites could be changing. This week’s first Land Use Information Bulletin includes notices premiering the new format the city wants to change to – the one you see atop this story. The intent is to provide more information, more readably, about the proposed project. This notice explains what prospective developers would be required to do; this notice explains how to comment before a final decision is made about the change – the deadline is May 23rd, two weeks from today. Unless something major comes up, the city hopes the new sign format will be in use starting next month.

P.S. In a Twitter exchange about the proposed sign-format change, we mentioned to @SeattleDCI that the ubiquity of tagging vandalism on the current-format signs seemed to be one of the biggest hindrances to their readability. In response, they told us that vandalized signs should be reported to prc@seattle.gov so they can be cleaned or replaced.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Resident scares off burglar

Another attempted early-morning burglary, interrupted by a resident. Bobby says this happened at an apartment in the 6000 block of California SW [map]:

On Monday morning at 4:00 AM, I woke up to a loud noise and went into my living room to discover a thief climbing through the window. I yelled loudly and he ran off. He only managed to break the outside screen before I caught him. Pretty startling to wake up to someone climbing through your window.

Bobby says SPD responded quickly and found a possible suspect; we’re checking on the status of the case.

P.S. Got questions about crime/safety? A member of the Southwest Precinct Community Police Team, Officer Jon Flores, is confirmed for tonight’s Admiral Neighborhood Association meeting, 7 pm at The Sanctuary at Admiral (42nd SW/SW Lander).

Lowman Beach seawall’s future: May 31st meeting details

In our coverage of the most-recent Morgan Community Association meeting, we mentioned MoCA announcing that the city was working on a May 31st meeting about the ongoing Lowman Beach seawall issue – it’s damaged and needs to be either replaced or removed. MoCA board member Cindi Barker sends word that the city has set the time and location – 6:30-7:30 pm May 31st at The Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California SW). The details are on the Lowman Beach Park webpage, and indicate that the city is likely to remove the seawall – as was done with one to the south years ago – and keep the tennis court. See the official meeting flyer here.

VIDEO: Mayor Murray announces at Alki Bathhouse that he will not run for re-election

(Added 12:09 pm: Unedited video of the mayor’s 9-minute speech)

10:29 AM: We’re at Alki Bathhouse, where Mayor Murray has just taken the stage.

(Front of the room, moments before the mayor arrived)
We’re told he will not take questions after making his statement. He begins, “I’m happy to be back home in Alki, where I spent my childhood … Alki is my favorite place on this planet. I’m happy to be back .. where it all began. I’m happy to be back here, a poor kid from this neighborhood who never even heard the word ‘gay’.” He says he’s “standing here before you as your mayor” and gets applause – a round of which greeted his arrival.

He is detailing achievements, starting with transportation, including the Viaduct/tunnel. “I’m happy to have been here, and to have been in the (state) House … and I’m happy after a 29-year battle to have passed the (LGBTQ) civil-rights bill.” More applause.

He continues to run through highlights of his career. “I’m happy to have been part of some remarkable achievements … from the civil-rights bill to the ring I wear on my finger.” Husband Michael Shiosaki is standing at his left. Murray’s voice is breaking a bit. “… We together have made progress as a city,” he continues.

(One minute of the mayor’s speech just before confirming he won’t run for re-election)

He is withdrawing as a candidate for mayor, he said at 10:34 am. He says the mayor’s race must focus on the future, and the “scandal” – referring to the lawsuit accusing him of sexually abusing minors decades ago – is making that impossible. He says it is hurting this city, as well as hurting him and his husband.

But, he says, deciding not to run for “the best job in politics – mayor of the city of Seattle – this career that has been my life” is painful. “It tears me to pieces to step away, but I believe it is in the best interest of this city that I love.”

… “I plan to remain mayor of this city until the end of my term, and I will be just as active (then as before). … As I have said in my final State of the City address, we cannot wait, Seattle cannot wait, we must continue moving forward.” And he thanks those who have stood by him for years, volunteers, family, friends. “I thank you for your support and your love .. and to the people of Seattle, thank you for the opportunity to serve you and this great city … It has been the absolute absolute opportunity of a lifetime.”

10:42 AM: The mayor has finished his remarks, and as an assistant told us beforehand, did not stay for questions. He left the stage after hugs and applause:

So who WILL be on the August 1st primary ballot? Next week is the official filing week for candidates, but 11 – besides Murray – have already filed campaign notices with the city – see them here – and we’ve heard of at least two more who aren’t listed there.

11:31 AM: We are back at HQ, uploading our video with the mayor’s entire statement, and we’ll be adding a few photos too. Here is the news release just published on the city website; it’s been one month and two days since the Seattle Times published first word of the lawsuit against the mayor.

While the mayor left right after his statement, some of those who stood behind him and along the walls inside the Bathhouse went outside and mingled a while in the sunshine, some doing TV interviews.

Best of Hands Barrelhouse hit by thieves, but moving on toward December opening

(WSB photo from February)

Two and a half months ago, we told you about the Best of Hands Barrelhouse, coming to the southeast corner of 35th/Webster. Last night, we heard from proprietor Nicholas Marianetti, who is asking for neighbors to keep an eye on the site, after metal thieves struck:

We began working at around 2:00 PM (Monday, May 8th) at the former site of John’s Corner Deli (we’ve been demoing there since mid April), and noticed that someone had come by between then and Sunday night when we were there last, and had cut apart and stolen copper piping from the back of the building. It looks like they may have been scared off by something as they left one large piece of piping behind as well as a tool they were using.

Earlier in the day, a reader had in fact asked us how Best of Hands was coming along, so we asked about that – here’s the reply:

So, right now we’re aiming for a December opening. Of course, this will depend on how quickly permitting works its way through the city and the Federal governments. According to our architect, we should expect to see our building permits sometime early-mid June. We plan to demo the rest of the month and perhaps into June, and be ready to build out as soon as the permits arrive. Hopefully build-out will be done by September, and we’ll be able to test-batch while we’re waiting for our federal TTB permits to clear (they were about 6 months out when we applied in April). We’ve already acquired a 7BBL brewhouse, so we’ve got our ducks in a row.

John’s Corner Deli closed in late January.

Mayor Murray to make announcement on Alki this morning

Yes, for those who are asking, Mayor Murray‘s office has just confirmed (via an advisory e-mailed to news media including us) that he will “make an announcement at 10:30 this morning at Alki Beach.” What that announcement will be, lots of rumors, nothing official. It’s been a month since he was sued with allegations of sexually abusing minors decades ago. Since then, he has continued to insist he’ll stay in office and run for a second term; the official filing period isn’t until next week. Why Alki? The mayor has an affinity for this area, having lived here for a while in childhood, and also, he noted after his election in 2013 that he had the largest margin of victory in this area. We’ll be there for the announcement.

Camp Second Chance’s first Community Advisory Committee meeting

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

Two months after Camp Second Chance became officially city-sanctioned, its Community Advisory Committee convened at the encampment on Myers Way in southeast West Seattle.

They heard updates from its operator, Polly Trout of Patacara Community Services, including her report that CSC’s population had more than tripled since it became sanctioned two months ago – from 14 to 49, counting three people who were reported to have arrived just as the Sunday afternoon meeting began. But that’s not yet the full capacity mentioned in the announcement last December that it would be one of three new sanctioned encampments in the city.

The committee – which the city decreed would be a required part of camp operations – includes a wide range of representatives from around the area, West Seattle to South Park to Top Hat to White Center, neighbors, businesses, nonprofits, neighboring senior-housing complex Arrowhead Gardens, and more. A city rep – Tom Van Bronkhorst from the Department of Neighborhoods – was at the meeting too. In all, more than 20 people were sitting in a canopy-covered circle before the meeting wrapped up.

Trout explained the camp’s operations – that it’s self-governed, with a Monday meeting where there’s a vote on decisions such as barring people who can’t follow its code of conduct, which includes “no criminal behavior, no stealing,” drug and alcohol free, being civil and ethical. The camp also has a grievance process if someone feels they’re not being treated fairly, and that can be pursued with Patacara’s board, but so far, she said, no one had done that.

She mentioned the services that have improved at CSC since signing a contract with the city on arch 8th – including: Read More

Power flickers around north West Seattle; no word of outage so far

9:58 PM: Thanks for the tips/questions. We’re receiving reports that power briefly flickered around north West Seattle – The Junction, Genesee Hill, Admiral. So far no word of the cause, and no WS outage has shown up on the Seattle City Light map. (If you have completely lost power, please alert City Light, 206-684-3000 – and then let us know at 206-293-6302 – thanks!)

10:32 PM: We’ve also heard from Gatewood, High Point, and Alki – where one person says it’s been attributed to balloons getting tangled in a power line, and several report a loud noise preceding the flicker. We’re not likely to hear anything official tonight but will check with SCL in the morning.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Admiral Way ‘sinkhole’

ORIGINAL REPORT, MONDAY, MAY 8TH: Thanks to the anonymous reader who sent that photo, saying SDOT just blocked off a “sinkhole” right in the middle of the uphill (eastbound) travel lane on Admiral Way at 57th. We don’t know if a crew will be working on it tonight – if not, we’ll check on it first thing in the morning.

UPDATED FRIDAY, MAY 12TH: After noticing last night that it wasn’t fixed yet, we asked SDOT today about the repair plan. At day’s end, they said the hole was scheduled for repair today; we drove by tonight and indeed, it has been.

About the police response at Admiral/38th

(WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli)

Several people have asked about a sizable police response on Admiral Way at 38th SW, which SPD blocked for a while, earlier this evening. Christopher Boffoli checked it out for WSB and here’s what he found out: It was originally reported as a possible “person in crisis” situation but police talked to the woman they were called about and eventually classified the call as a family disturbance, no crime involved, no one hurt. Police are no longer there and 38th has reopened.

BIZNOTE: New in North Delridge – Muse Gallery and Studio rental space

We often get asked about rental/event spaces in West Seattle. Here’s a new one: Muse Gallery and Studio, in North Delridge. It’s a new venture by the proprietors of The Skylark next door. Matt Larson explains:

We are trying to provide a space for artists and artisans to show/sell/teach their craft in West Seattle. It also makes for an affordable and spacious photo studio as it includes seamless backgrounds and tall ceilings.

Muse Gallery and Studio is available to rent for a wide variety of events. Pop-up art shows, photo studio rental, private parties, classes, recitals, etc. can all be held in this warm, open space. Gallery lighting, wood floors, open floor plan, and seamless backdrops make it versatile for a number of uses. There is also plenty of free parking, and catering available. First and foremost, Muse is about finding inspiration and making connections in our art community. Our goal is to draw attention to and promote artists, studios, and collectives from all the neighborhoods in Seattle by showcasing them here in West Seattle.

Larson says you can get a firsthand look at Muse (3801 Delridge Way SW) during two upcoming events: Night Circus #5, an “art and social gathering” 6-9 pm this Thursday (May 11th) followed by music next door at Skylark, and a one-night art show May 20th by Casey Brookbush, with live acoustic music by Jake Carden, 6-10 pm May 20th, with music afterward at Skylark.

FERRY TRAFFIC ALERT: Fauntleroy tollbooth changes to be tested for four days next week

That two-page flyer explains a test that Washington State Ferries will conduct with tollbooth procedures at the Fauntleroy ferry dock next week – Monday, May 15th, through Thursday, May 18th. It’s the next step in the process we’ve been covering since January, when WSF chose a citizen task force to help come up with “quick wins” aimed at reducing traffic backups and other delays, especially headed outbound from Fauntleroy in the afternoons and evenings. When the task force finished its first round of meetings in late March – as reported here – those “quick wins” were announced as a two-part plan, changing tollbooth procedures so four vehicles could be processed each minute instead of three, and a big public-information campaign to make sure everyone knows what’s going on (including encouraging ferry users to buy advance tickets).

They also agreed that the proposed changes should be tested in May before potential official implementation in June. So that’s what will happen next week – as detailed on the flyer above. WSF spokesperson Brian Mannion tells WSB that “WSF’s internal implementation team (comprised of experienced terminal staff, vessel crew and supervisors on the route), will be on site all this week to discuss the changes with WSF workers, drivers and passengers” before the test project starts next Monday.

Now, we have an update from co-proprietor Ray Maranonn, who tells WSB, “We are happy to announce that we will be opening on Wednesday, May 10th, at 11:30 am. Our hours for now will be 11:30 am-7 pm Wednesday-Sunday, and I anticipate those changing to Monday-Sunday in the next few weeks.” This is Sushi Samurai‘s second location; its first is on Queen Anne.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Big hit-run clue; car break-in

Two reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:

HIT-RUN DRIVER LEAVES BUMPER BEHIND: The photo and report are from Angela:

My family woke up this morning to our car totaled by a hit and run. We live on the increasingly dangerous street of 49th and Admiral. This is the SECOND TIME it has happened in 2 months! As much as we love paying $500 deductibles, this is getting ridiculous. The way people drive up Admiral from the beach and whip a right onto 49th is scary and reckless.

We have lived here for 6 years and have seen at least 7 or 8 hit and runs just on our block. I’ve reported it to the city before, but the fact that it’s a main arterial they said they can’t do anything about it?

We have called the police and are keeping an eye out for a Land Rover that has the front bumper gone this morning (photo above). … I would really love to catch this person!

We’ll add the SPD incident number when available. (ADDED 11:13 AM: 17-160911)

CAR PROWL: From Joe:

Our car was broken into during the early morning of 5/7 in the Gatewood area on SW Willow between 38th and 39th. No signs of forced entry. Various items including golf clubs were taken.

WSB crime coverage is archived here as well as on the Crime Watch page.

If you are passing Fauntleroy/Alaska and notice a Seattle Fire response outside Spruce/LA Fitness, with people standing outside, it’s a fire-alarm call but no fire. According to this photo tweeted by Cami, the units are on 39th SW so not affecting the arterials.

BRIDGE CLOSURE: Crews are back to working the westbound bridge for streetlight repair as of early today – we’ll be checking to verify whether another closure is planned tonight.

7:15 AM: The aforementioned SFD call at Spruce has closed, which means it’s over and all units have left.

8:05 AM: WSDOT reports a crash on the NB 1st Ave S bridge, right lane.
