Three Tuesday night police responses that might have caught your eye:
WESTWOOD – DOUG GOT HIS BIKE BACK: Since our Monday morning Crime Watch reader report from Doug, whose bicycle was stolen from atop his car outside his North Delridge home when he stepped back inside to get his child, the story played out in comments – including some sightings. This one at Westwood Village from “West Seattlite” on Tuesday night, plus police assistance, got Doug’s bike back. (The thief, however, is still on the loose.)
That was around 7:30 pm. Then, two sizable police responses in the 9 pm vicinity – we heard about them too late to check out firsthand, but did get some info from police:
TRIANGLE – FIGHT: This one brought a big response to the Fauntleroy/Alaska gas-station vicinity. Southwest Precinct Lt. Alan Williams explains that two officers in the area saw a fight in progress; when they moved in, two people ran from them. They found one person “involved in fighting with the 2 suspects who ran off, but he was somewhat uncooperative.”
ADMIRAL – STREET FIGHT: This started as a confrontation between people walking across California SW by West Seattle High School and people in a car. An argument turned into an assault when one of the street-crossers got hit in the head. Seattle Fire was called to treat the wound. The alleged attacker wasn’t found, says Lt. Williams, but police had a potential lead on his identity.
9:22 PM: Though it’s a rainless night, water is rushing downhill in the Luna Park area under the West Seattle Bridge. We checked it out after a tip from Stephanie. A Seattle Public Utilities worker was checking it out along 30th SW, uphill and west of Avalon Way; he told us an SPU crew would be on the way over after fixing an unrelated break downtown. We have a message out to SPU to find out more, including whether anyone is without water service because of the break.
10:37 PM: Haven’t heard back from SPU, so we might not get any followup info until tomorrow.

A transit alert from South Seattle College (WSB sponsor), taking effect tomorrow:
Starting Wednesday, November 30, King County Metro Routes 125 and 128 will resume service to South Seattle College’s main campus bus stop located to the west of the Robert Smith Building (RSB on the campus map, which you can see here).
The temporary stop located near the Northwest Wine Academy in the north parking lot will no longer be in service.
Construction on campus had led to the change.

4:49 PM: If you’re wondering about the Seattle Fire/Police response at California/Walker [map] in North Admiral – it’s reported to be an incident involving a pedestrian. We have a crew on the way to find out more.
4:53 PM: Via scanner, initial medical assessment says the victim is a 29-year-old woman hit by a driver going about 30 mph, with injuries including a possible skull fracture.
5:18 PM: The street is reopening, as police have decided not to bring out the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad. Firefighters told WSB’s Christopher Boffoli that the victim was believed to be crossing at mid-block when hit.
6:37 PM: As discussed in comments, there also are witness reports that the victim was crossing at a corner. We won’t be able to find out more about the investigation, nor about the victim’s condition, before tomorrow.
10:46 PM: We did hear tonight from an Admiral business owner who says the victim is an employee and was on her way to work. A commenter says she was still in surgery a little while ago.
Thanks to everyone who has asked about/pointed out the closure of Alki Huddle (formerly Bamboo). We’ve been trying for about a week to find out what’s happening there, and today, we finally succeeded.
It’s been bought by the ownership of the Hawks Nest Bar and Grill in SODO, and they’re remodeling it to become the Hawks Nest West – “a place to watch the game,” and more. It will be all-ages until 9 pm.
Their goal is to get it open in time for at least the “second round” of playoffs for the Seahawks. And you’ll find some new touches, like a fire pit in the outdoor seating area, and a new menu.
The new owners took it over at the start of the month but it took a few weeks before they were ready to temporarily close it for the remodel. The changeover isn’t a complete surprise – The Huddle had been listed for sale for a while, and the former owner had told WSB that when his new restaurant (Sopranos Antico in Admiral) opens, that would be his only restaurant.

LICENSE-PLATE THEFT: This is a particularly sneaky crime – sometimes plates will be stolen and replaced, and you might not even notice the switch. This reader did:
I just wanted to let the community know that I had my license plates stolen from my 2005 Honda Accord on Saturday night (while we were home). This was on 38th Ave SW. Nothing else was taken or damaged.
CAR PROWL #1: Blair says this happened in the 7700 block of 46th SW late Sunday or early Monday:
Someone evidently broke into our car and searched for valuables – contents of glove box and console were emptied onto seat. The car was parked in our driveway. Nothing appears to be missing as we don’t leave anything valuable in our cars.
There is no visible damage to the door or window. We have been hearing of car prowls where people use a remote to unlock the doors somehow so we are thinking they were able to unlock our doors electronically somehow, which is of course alarming.
CAR PROWL #2: From Bailey:
Our car was broken into on the night of 11/22 on 31st & Elmgrove. Parked in the driveway in front of the house. Not sure if we left it unlocked or if door was opened by other means. Everything was rifled through, but only things that appears to be missing is our national parks pass and two pairs of sunglasses (about $350 total so that’s a bummer).
STOLEN TRUCK FOUND: Update from Carrie, whose stolen pickup truck was reported here Sunday – it was found in North Admiral, 49th and Hill, with ignition damage.

The sign says remodeling – but there’s a lot more to what’s going on inside the Tap Station, which opened in the 35th/Kenyon mini-business district three years ago as a beverage store. When it reopens this Friday, it’ll include “a full, all-ages, family-friendly restaurant” – something in short supply south of Morgan Junction.
Tap Station general manager Jeremy Martin tells WSB, “We’ll have a sandwich-based menu with about a dozen selections, a sandwich for every taste, we hope. We’ll have room for 36 with several tables and two standing rails up front and bench seating in the back room.” That’s what you see, work in progress, in the photo above; we also snapped a preview photo of the menu.
They’ll continue with the “same amount of retail,” just adding the food-and-drink service, and weekly events such as “wine night” on Mondays, “member night” for their beer-club members on Tuesdays, movie nights on Wednesdays, and more. (Here’s their December calendar.) Hours will be 3-10 pm Mondays-Thursdays, 3 pm-11 pm Fridays, noon-11 pm Saturdays, noon-8 pm Sundays.

In case you missed this the day before Thanksgiving – Seattle Public Schools says the results of October’s survey have been tallied and there’s now a proposed plan for how to change schedules next year. Here’s the district announcement, starting with the backstory:
School Schedule Recommendations for 2017-18
To improve K-12 students’ academic access and achievement, the Seattle Education Association (SEA) and Seattle Public Schools (SPS) agreed to add 20 minutes of core instructional time to the school day starting in the 2017-18 school year. This action also brings our instructional hours into alignment with other districts in the region.
In addition, SEA and SPS agreed to add teacher collaboration time into the work day to support common planning time and improved student outcomes.
Thank you to the 11,000 plus family members, teachers, principals and community partners who responded to last month’s survey on how to add 20 minutes to the instructional day and provided guidance on when to implement the one hour of teacher collaboration time per week.

7:10 AM: Good morning! No incidents reported in/outbound from West Seattle so far this morning.
As the city continues seeking feedback on its draft upzoning maps for the Mandatory Housing Affordability component of the Housing Affordability and Livability Agenda … two things to mention tonight:
First, one more reminder that TOMORROW is your chance to get briefed on everything from how to read these maps to how to effectively comment, via a community-organized workshop for all of West Seattle and South Park, 6:30 pm at Highland Park Improvement Club (12th SW/SW Holden). We previewed it here and here.
Second, the city has gone public with some of the feedback it’s received so far, from the “focus groups” whose members were recruited earlier this year. Rather than assemble the groups geographically, they were organized by types of “urban village” they lived in. The focus groups’ November meetings are being done online, and include slide decks with information including feedback from their previous meetings. Tonight, the group from “lower-density urban villages” including Morgan Junction, South Park, and Westwood-Highland Park met, including this slide deck with background information preceding the draft maps, each of which has short comment surveys on the side:

While the focus has been on the urban villages, this also will affect multi-family zoning outside UVs, and you can take a look at this interactive map for a closer look at your neighborhood. (NOTE: That map ALSO will allow you to zoom in to street level, helpful if you’ve had trouble reading the draft maps so far.)
Again, tomorrow night’s workshop in Highland Park is an excellent chance to hear from, and talk with, local neighborhood leaders who have been immersed in this process. At any time, you can get feedback to the city via its special website for this – hala.consider.it – and/or via e-mail at halainfo@seattle.gov. And then there’s a city “open house” meeting about the rezoning maps, with other topics promised, next week – 5:30-7:30 pm December 7th at Shelby’s Bistro and Ice Creamery in The Junction (4752 California SW).
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ALL THAT? A final set of maps will go to the City Council next year (June is the latest estimated timeframe) – councilmembers’ approval is needed before zoning can be changed. And the city also is working on an Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed zoning changes – environmental impacts aren’t just what you would traditionally think of as “environmental” but also aspects such as traffic and noise. The draft EIS is due in February-March, according to a timeline shown during tonight’s online meeting.

Meet Nancy and Kristin. They e-mailed to let us know they have opened a new business at 5214 Delridge Way SW, the Community General Store, starting part time, expecting to go full time in February or March. No, it’s not a retail shop:
We are a community center and library of things to support members in living life with more joy and less waste. Membership allows you access to a collection of useful and beautiful things that are wonderful to use but hard to store: outdoor gear, things for raising young children, food dehydrators, mending kits, boot polish and simple repair, and also a collection of local, handmade art.
Additionally, any time our doors are open, we’re hosting events. Right now we’re really enjoying Make and Mend, where we share basic sewing tools and encourage each other’s various projects. One month after two West Seattleites announced a donation drive for the Water Protectors led by the Standing Rock Sioux, Giles Stanton and Cathy Morgan are back from their Thanksgiving-week run to North Dakota, and just sent a wrapup report and photos:
The two days and nights we were at the Oceti Sakowin Camp (connected to both Rosebud and Sacred Stone Camps) saw their first snowfall of the season — it was numbingly cold though nothing compared with the weather yet to come. But, thanks to all of you, they now have a better chance at comfortably enduring the coming prairie winter. Giles helped construct an expansion to their main Donation / Supply Tent and Cathy applied her newfound donation-sorting skills to the profusion of items pouring in daily.
The packed cargo van of West Seattle donations was gratefully swallowed up into the organized ocean of useful winter goods and flowed right back out into the hands of long-term supporters fortifying themselves against the cold.
The Go Fund Me campaign has already been very successful — thank you! Once we have the cargo van’s gas totals collected and reimbursed, we’ll send all the unspent dollars back to the camp to buy whatever they need by then.
The trip, and this entire experience, has been immensely powerful and eye-opening. A truly international network is engaged in alliance at Standing Rock; the sign post and a tour of license plates and handmade banners reveals the scope of the community on the ground. We are humbled by your generosity and inspired by the unflagging energy and commitment on active display all over the camp.

That video is from Doug, showing the theft of his bicycle in North Delridge this morning:
I put the bike on the roof in my driveway at 25th and Brandon [map], then went inside for about 15 minutes. Not smart, obviously! When I came out to load my son into his car seat, I realized it was gone. The thief was visible on the edge of the security video frame for about a minute and a half shortly after I went inside the house, then approached the car with a pen light in his mouth. It took him about 3 minutes to get the bike off of the roof.
I carpool with my wife in the morning, but this is my main mode of transportation home in the evenings. It’s worth a lot financially and sentimentally as I put it together over many months this spring, picking out each part one at a time.
It’s an orange Soma Wolverine, size large steel frame. Drop handlebars, disc brakes, brown leather saddle (Fizik brand, but no logo – I glued the leather cover on myself), dynamo front hub with dynamo lights front and rear, 8 speed internally geared rear hub, extra wide tires and full black fenders, plus a rear rack. It’s a very distinctive bike. I’d appreciate it if everyone could keep an eye out.
Police incident number is 16-428111. And I should note that two officers arrived within 10 minutes and took this very seriously. A huge thanks to SPD!

Viewing, burial, and memorial dates are set for Andrew “Andy” L. Nelson, 95, and his family is sharing this remembrance with the community:
Andrew (Andy) Louis Nelson climbed his last mountain on Wednesday, November 23rd (just shy of his 96th birthday), at The Kenney in West Seattle. Andy was born in Seattle on December 10, 1920, to George Gedeon Nelson and Bertha Amelia Lindfors Nelson. Andy’s grandfather Andrew Nelson was a Swedish immigrant and pioneer in the Juanita area who built the Juanita School and the Modern Woodman Hall (Juanita Community Church). The Nelson family home, built by Andy’s grandfather at 100th NE & NE 132nd, was torn down in the 1970’s to make way for an Albertson’s grocery store.
Even at a young age Andy was an outdoor guy; he loved scouting and the mountains. There is some evidence that he even won a 1934 Seattle Model Sailboat Race at Green Lake.
Andy graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939 and then attended the University of Washington, graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Having served in the UW ROTC program (Sept 1942), Andy entered the Army Air Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant in February 1944.
Andy served as an Electronics Officer during WWII instructing pilots on navigation systems. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon; America Theatre Ribbon; World War II Victory Medal as well as numerous commendations. Towards the end of WWII Andy was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. After his discharge from the Army, Andy was advised that as a Mathematics teacher he would not earn much money and he enrolled at the UW for a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Andy’s business career was at Boeing as an Engineer writing technical manuals for aeronautical applications.
As an Eagle Scout (1937), Andy gave back to the community in so many ways. He was a Life Member of the Mountaineers, Life Member of the UW Alumni Association (Go Dawgs!), Boy Scouts of America Troop #282 Leader (recognized for his over 60 years in scouting), West Seattle Lions Club, West Side Presbyterian Church and an all-around wilderness adventurer who shared his love of hiking and mountain climbing (he climbed Mt Rainier twice) with many. Andy “walked the walk; talked the talk” when it came to understanding the environmental issues in keeping “the great outdoors” great.
While Andy had no children of his own, his wife, the late Doris Isabella Powell Halliday Nelson, presented him with a family of stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all who thoroughly enjoyed him. Doris and Andy spent many years traveling throughout the world – from Elder Hostels and UW trips across America to Europe to Australia; Antarctica; the Arctic; Africa; Asia; Central & South America, etc.
Andy is survived by his step-daughter Diane Halliday Longyear of Elko, Nevada, and her son Rick Longyear (also of Elko) and children/grandchildren; the children & family of her son Robert (deceased) Longyear; nephew William R. Powell of Chehalis; nieces Bonny Powell Taylor of Kent; Patricia Powell McGuire (Joe) of Manchester; and their families consisting of great- & great-great-nephews and -nieces.
The family would also like to acknowledge and thank longtime friends Gary Benson; Warren McKinstry; Paul Smith; Rev. Ron Rice; Stacy St. John; Ron Burke; and Bill Hart for their friendship, rides, stories, etc. We so appreciate your friendship with Andy and your stories! And a special thank you to all the past Troop 282 members. Last, but not certainly least, is a special thank you for the wonderful staff at The Kenney/Lincoln Vista and the Kline Galland Hospice – what a wonderful group of caring individuals!
The family requests that in lieu of flowers and in keeping with Andy’s pattern of giving, contributions in his memory to any of the following organizations would be appreciated: The Seattle Council Boy Scouts of America; West Seattle Senior Center; West Seattle Food Bank; Southwest Seattle Historical Museum; The Kenney Foundation; The Nordic Museum; or The Mountaineers.

STOLEN PICKUP TRUCK: From Carrie:
Our 1989 Toyota long-bed, charcoal-gray pickup has been stolen. It has tinted windows, in good shape, a large stainless attached lock box (although they may have removed it already). Last parked on Walnut, 3200 block. License Plate C23495G.
PACKAGE THEFT: Just in from Paul:
I wanted to inform you of a stolen item off of our doorstep in Sunrise Heights.
The ski bindings (Marker Griffon 13 ID, 110mm, black) were delivered via UPS from Backcountry.com and dropped on our doorstep on 23.Nov at 12:36 pm (per the UPS tracking info). We had already left town for Thanksgiving. Between the delivery time and when we arrived home on 27.Nov at 12:30 pm, someone had opened the package and stole the item from the box. They left the empty box on our doorstep.
Ironically, I had texted our neighbor to pick up the box but they were not at home. So I knew I was taking a risk – unfortunately the gamble didn’t pay off.

Between Hudson and Dawson on 41st Ave SW. We left the neighborhood for a day or two on the Thanksgiving weekend and returned to a ransacked car. The villain tossed the whole car, but it looks like they were looking for something other than tissues, papers, pens, grocery bags and Bed Bath and Beyond coupons. No damage to locks or ignition. Looking for weed, perhap? Good luck with THAT!
CAR PROWL #2: Bradi reports a car prowl at 30th/Roxbury. Only one thing taken – a towel branded with the defunct Feedback Lounge’s logo.
CAR PROWL #3: Also earlier this holiday weekend, from Kirstin: “My car was also broken into … in the 3600 block of 48th Ave. Sunglasses, first aid kit, and a trunk full of stuff I was going to take to the Salvation Army truck.
Here’s a chance to include local students in your holiday-season giving:
Chief Sealth International High School is looking for some donations for its Closet which is stocked with school supplies, toiletries, clothing, and a food pantry for students in need. We’re hoping that as you shop the holiday sales, you might consider picking up and donating these items for the Closet:
* Women’s and Men’s underwear — all sizes Small – XXL and preferably boxer briefs for the men
* Women’s and Men’s socks — no-show and crew-style athletic socks, men’s dress socks, as well as fun and just plain everyday socks
* Plain white undershirts — all sizes
We can always use new or gently used:
* T-shirts and long-sleeve t-shirts
* Hoodies
* Athletic shorts and pants (these items don’t stay on our shelves long!)
* Warm winter coats
* Men’s suits in black, gray, or dark blue
