FROM WEST SEATTLE TO STANDING ROCK: Local donations, heading east

A little more than three weeks after we first published the announcement of a West Seattle donation drive for the Standing Rock Sioux-led pipeline-route-protest camp, the results are about to head eastbound to North Dakota. We checked in as they loaded up around sunset. Here’s the final official update:

Thanks to all of West Seattle who helped fill a large cargo van of warm clothing and winter gear for the Water Protectors encamped on the very cold prairie in North Dakota. We are leaving to deliver all of this stuff and will report back as we can from the road. Great to be part of this community.

The van they’re driving belongs to Harold, who they met via the response to the reports we published. Here’s the final inventory (PDF) of what they’ve received and are taking.

They’ve also received some donations to cover expenses via this GoFundMe page (which also includes a more-comprehensive explanation of what they’re doing).

    Thank you for representing!

On Sunday night a 21yr old woman was severely injured by the police during the protest. Sophia Wilanski was hit by a concussion grenade thrown by the police resulting in the almost total loss of her arm. She will be lucky if it is not amputated. There is a Go Fund Me account to cover at least some of her medical bills. You can donate to this by the following link-

It is shameful that police are violently harming water protectors who hope for nothing more than clean water and equity.

    Hey Guys!

So proud and inspired by your perseverance and commitment to justice.  My name is Kelli C. and I am currently organizing a donation drive of supplies for the Sacred Stone Camp.  While we have a large number of donations (supplies and monetary) that have been promised and I am extremely committed to seeing this project through, I work full time.  And I was wondering if you knew anyone or had any ideas/recommendations about how to transport all these items.

Please email me at kellicad3@gmail,com.  Seeing as how this situation is time sensitive, I’d love any help you could offer. Thanks so much. Stay safe and stay strong.

    -Kelli C.

Thank you so much for allowing so many of us to feel a personal connection to helping! I loved seeing my sage bundle as one of the items delivered on your PDF ❤️ I hope all of the socks and warm layers are helping too! So much love and thanks to you

Safe travels to Standing Rock! We’ve been supporting two groups going there with food, medical supplies and other stuff gathered from our community on Lummi Island near Bellingham. This is a national disgrace: a continuation of colonial aggression and violence extending back more than 500 years. That we are here yet again, forcing indigenous at gunpoint to accept something the (mostly white) population of Bismark refused due to their concern for their water supply, breaks my heart and makes me very angry. I produced a short music video “North Dakota Plains” to help people understand what is happening. All proceeds go directly to help the tribe and not one cent goes to me. Please watch, share, and contribute to Standing Rock as you are able. https://youtu.be/uvLIy7ewiDQ
