Sign spat: Luna Park Café proprietor fighting $500 citation for nearby A-frame

IMG_3407
(One month after Luna Park Café was cited for an A-frame sign here, apartment complexes from Columbia City and The Triangle were back)

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

You might have noticed fewer advertising A-frame signs on streetcorners in recent weeks.

For a while earlier this year, it seemed every intersection in West Seattle had a cluster on weekends – mostly advertising the bigger new apartment complexes around town, even a building in Columbia City, six miles away.

Then the city cracked down and issued warnings – with one local entrepreneur as a sort of bycatch.

John Bennett, owner of Luna Park Café, got a $500 citation for an A-frame sign his restaurant had long placed at Harbor/Avalon/Spokane (same location as the top photo), half a block from his café, meant to catch the attention of people coming off the bridge to head toward the West Seattle waterfront.

He’s fighting the citation and has an appeal hearing this week.

Remembering Raymond W. Tofteland, 1964-2016

Family and friends will gather June 18th to celebrate the life of Raymond W. Tofteland, who died a week ago. Here’s the remembrance they’re sharing now:

Raymond (Ray) Wayne Tofteland died peacefully in his sleep May 8, 2016 in Seattle at the age of 51 from complications of renal disease.

Raymond was born August 7, 1964, in Minot, North Dakota, to Lawrence (Larry) and Eileen Tofteland. His family moved to Seattle in 1968. He attended Arbor Heights Elementary School, Denny Middle School and graduated in 1983 from Rainier Beach High School. He married his high-school sweetheart Melissa Whipple in 1991, and rejoiced when their beloved daughter Ashlee was born in 1994. While Raymond and Melissa divorced in 2005, they remained good friends. As his health declined, he moved in with Melissa and Ashlee, who took care of him.

As a boy, Raymond started earning money by mowing lawns. After graduating, he worked for La Mexicana making tortillas. In 1989 he started working at the Jefferson Square Safeway in West Seattle. Many years later, he transferred to a University District Safeway. He was on medical leave for the past two years, but was a Safeway employee for 27 years.

Raymond loved to fish (especially at Ilwaco), camp, go on road trips and barbecue. He spent many happy hours teaching Ashlee to make a campfire and to fish. He loved hanging out with friends and family around campfires, on his sister’s boat or just at home.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father Lawrence (Larry) Tofteland. Left to mourn are his daughter Ashlee Tofteland; his mother Eileen Tofteland; his ex-wife Melissa Tofteland; his brother Mark Tofteland; his sister Melissa (Missy) Speer-Tofteland; his nephews Gabe, Levi, and Luai; and his nieces Tara, Amanda, Jameila, and Sophia.

Letters of condolence may be sent to the Toftelands at 10441 57th Ave South, Seattle, WA 98178.

A celebration of life will be held June 18th in Olympia. Please call or text 206-913-7148 for more information or check Facebook for the “Celebration of Life for Raymond Tofteland” event.

Raymond’s last wish was for his remains to be taken to North Dakota, where his father is buried. Please consider donating to help make this final trip with his daughter a reality at gofundme.com/raymondtofteland

Special WordsWest event Wednesday: Kids’ Night!

 |   Fun stuff to do | West Seattle books | West Seattle news

Get ready for summer reading season this Wednesday night with a special early start for the monthly WordsWest Literary Series event – this time around, it’s Kids’ Night! Here’s the official announcement, if you haven’t already seen it in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:

On May 18, 2016, WordsWest will have a special, early 6 pm start and feature Kelly Jones, author of “Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer,” and Dana Simpson, author of the “Phoebe and Her Unicorn” comic series and collections, winner of the Washington State Book Award and the PNBA Award. Not only that, Jenny Cole of Burien’s Page 2 Books will share a Favorite Poem and host a Summer Reading Table. Yummy treats will be served! This evening is partially funded by Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

Kelly Jones is a former librarian and bookseller who has worked with writers of all ages. She keeps much-loved, but fair…ly ordinary chickens at her home in Shoreline, Washington. Her debut novel “Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer,” about 12-year-old Sophie and her magical chickens, was illustrated by Katie Kath and published by Knopf Books for Young Readers. Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer was named an ALSC Children’s Notable Book for 2016, a 2016 Mathical Honor Book, a 2016-2017 Texas Bluebonnet Master List nominee, and a 2016-2017 Georgia Children’s Book Award Finalist; Kelly was named a 2016 Children’s Choice Debut Author finalist by the Children’s Choice Book Awards.

Dana Claire Simpson grew up in Gig Harbor, drawing the entire time. She eventually graduated from the Evergreen State College, despite having spent all her time drawing, and not always for credit. Attempts at doing real work along the way are hardly worth mentioning; the relevant fact is that, from 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip “Ozy and Millie.” After winning the Comic Strip Superstar contest in 2009, she developed the comic strip “Phoebe and Her Unicorn” (originally known online as “Heavenly Nostrils”), currently syndicated in nearly 200 newspapers. There have been three “Phoebe and Her Unicorn” book collections, to date. The first, Phoebe and Her Unicorn, won a 2015 Washington State Book Award. The second, Unicorn on a Roll, won a 2016 Pacific Northwest Book Award. A third book, Unicorn vs. Goblins, was released in February 2016.

Every third Wednesday at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to guided writing explorations. Each month we also host a community member to share his or her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project. WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw.

C & P (a WSB sponsor) is at 5612 California SW.

West Seattle coyotes: Junction sighting

FullSizeRender (9)

We just happened to be at the West Seattle Farmers Market an hour or so ago when a text came in (206-293-6302, any time) with that photo of a coyote spotted nearby, by Hope Lutheran (42nd/41st/Oregon). No telling whether the coyote was trying to find its way to the market, church, or somewhere else, but yet another reminder that they live among us and they’re out in the daytime too. The best advice from the state’s excellent infoguide is to scare them away if you see them; our texter said a passing car had already done that.

VIDEO: Local hurdlers’ success @ Metro League track championships

(110 hurdles at Metro championships – video by Doug Cooper)

More athletic achievements for local students – this time at the Metro League track championships.

Doug Cooper
, who coaches hurdles for the West Seattle High School track team, shared the videos and news of some big achievements in that sport:

Chaaka Trahan, a senior at West Seattle High School, ran a sizzling time of 14.20 seconds in the 110m high hurdles to win the league title in the event at Friday’s Metro League Championship meet at the SWAC track.

Trahan also won the Metro League title in the Long Jump with a jump of 22’7, and then added a third title to his collection for the day when he and fellow standout hurdler Cass Elliott and sprinters Rylee Farrison and Miles Hairston teamed up to smash yet another school record in the 4×400 relay and bring home the Metro League title in the process.

If all that wasn’t enough, Trahan added a 2nd place finish in one of the very best Metro League 300 hurdles finals in recent memory:

(300 hurdles at Metro championships – video by Kelsey Lenzie)

Trahan and Elliott finished 2nd (39.49 seconds) and 3rd (39.63) to Nathan Hale’s Tremaine McAdams (38.49). These times from their race on Friday vaulted Elliott, Trahan, and McAdams into the top 5 fastest recorded times in the entire State this season.

Trahan and Elliott led a strong cast of athletes on West Seattle’s Boys team to a 4th-place overall finish in the 16-school Seattle Metro League, which is considered by many to be the most competitive league in the state. All of them along with a great girls’ team which finished 8th in the league will be back in action at SWAC Track near Chief Sealth IHS this upcoming Wednesday (5/18) and Friday (5/20) for the Sea-King District Championship meet. Both meets kick off at 4:00 pm.

Cooper added that Trahan’s 14.2 in the 110 may have broken a half-century-old WSHS record – 14.3 by Al Karlberg in 1965 – but more research needs to be done, he explains, because “hand times were used back then and automated or converted automatic times are used now.”

He also adds that Quinn Wiley, a Chief Sealth International High School hurdler who trains with WSHS because Sealth has no hurdles coach on staff, won the girls’ 300 Metro League title – despite never hurdling until this year! She had, Cooper says, “one of the best times in the state, 45.93 seconds!”

Other WSHS and CSIHS track athletes did well at the championships – as you’ll see if you review the results list here.

 |   West Seattle history | West Seattle news | West Seattle people

Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, come to the Southwest Library to find out something you probably didn’t know about West Seattle history. You’ll hear it from Carol-Ann Thornton, whose video invitation, below, is provided by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society:

Thornton will talk – with you, not at you, as she said in the video – about “Culture Shock: The Awakening of Alki and West Seattle in 1962 and Beyond.” It’s the latest chapter of the SouthWest Stories series, co-presented by SWSHS and SPL; her stories include her experience as the first African-American student at Alki Elementary. The event is free, and everyone’s welcome; SW Library is at 35th SW/SW Henderson.

West Seattle weekend scene: Shrimp seekers bring busy day to the bay

(WSB photos)

Some noticed this was a very busy day at Don Armeni Boat Ramp and on Elliott Bay today – and as soon as we were asked about it, we found out why: Area waters were open to recreational shrimp fishing for one day only, 7 am to 3 pm.

The state-mandated limit for those who went out today was 80 shrimp. Here’s a state-produced guide to which shrimp are most common locally.

POST-WSCGSD: Here’s who’s welcoming donations right now, and beyond

Here are the nonprofits that are welcoming post-West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day donations today (and beyond):

NORTHWEST CENTER: Remember that the Big Blue Truck has moved locations since last year – still in The Junction, but next to the Key Bank satellite, 4718 44th SW. Open late today, until 6:30 pm. (4:30 pm update: Photo added – three trucks were there and a fourth arriving.)

BOOKS FOR SCHOOLS: You’ll find a dropoff spot near the NW Center truck today only (on 44th SW) until 6 pm, but there are other dropoff spots for the next week – details, and what will be accepted, are here.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: They have a truck at Holy Rosary‘s parking lot, off 42nd north of Genesee, until 5 pm:

“We will be happy to take your no-longer-needed clothing, books and small household items. Unfortunately we cannot accept any large furniture or appliances. Your donation of goods will help restock our St. Vincent de Paul stores which help the needy in our area.”

ALKI ELEMENTARY ‘CLOTHING FOR THE CAUSE’: A dropoff trailer taking clothing items (as listed here) is at Alki Elementary School (3010 59th SW) all week – you’ll find it on the south side of the main building, off 59th:

And if you’re interested in pickup, they’re doing that tomorrow – text your address to 206-660-8524 and have your bags on the curb by 8 am Sunday.

(Anyone else? Let us know ASAP at garagesale@westseattleblog.com – thanks – and thanks to all the generous donors helping local nonprofits!)

9:04 AM: Let the sales begin – 320+ of them, all over West Seattle, as the 12th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day officially begins! Above is a photo just in from Sale #89, 6757 37th SW in Gatewood, where a years-in-the-making collection of watermelon-themed items is up for grabs. We’ll be visiting some of the sales in the hours ahead and featuring your photos (sellers OR shoppers, just be sure to mention the official map number of the sale in the photo) – garagesale@westseattleblog.com – have fun! Meantime, the first-ever WSCGSD sale to set up its own Twitter handle is ready to go:

Sale #20 is at 9640 42nd SW near the Southwest end of Fauntleroy Park, in north Arbor Heights.

9:31 AM: Also in Arbor Heights, Sale #11 (10229 35th SW) sends word that they have free popcorn. Also, in addition to the official description, amateur-radio antennas. … A photo’s in from Sale #70 (5923 46th Ave SW), where you’ll find surfboards and snowboards:

image1 (5)

Good news on the weather front – SUNBREAK! We had faith. Meantime, we are stopping at Sale #307 (9010 Delridge Way SW), where the folks at Envision Remodels wrote on their registration form, “We are really excited!” As excited as a Sting fan might be to find this there:

Our next stop, a site that caught our eye because the OFFICIAL SALE sign is prominently displayed around the perimeter – Sale #317 at 24th/Thistle, a moving sale east of the Longfellow Creek P-Patch that in turn is east of Chief Sealth International High School:

IMG_4444

One of today’s benefit sales has posted photos in the comment thread – it’s Sale #90, at and benefiting Safe Futures Youth Center at 6337 35th SW:

And we’re on our way to another fundraiser, Sale #27 at 5637 42nd SW, benefiting Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp for people with disabilities:

IMG_4448

42nd SW is busy – that street (which stretches from Admiral to Arbor Heights) has 15 sales from north to south! Just heard as two people get back into their van in front of where we’re parked, “I think we’re doing great!”

10:04 AM: Some benefits, we didn’t know about in advance but we’re getting word as WSCGSD unfolds. Here’s a photo just in from Sale #55, 4052 SW Henderson in Upper Fauntleroy:

image1 (6)

Their announcement: “Our sale has a kid-run stand selling homemade chocolate chip cookies and pink lemonade to benefit the Downtown Emergency Service Center.”

10:30 AM: A few sprinkles now in the south – but looks like a high cloud ceiling to the north, the direction we’re headed in. We’ve just stopped at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor), one of two sites where small sellers are invited to sign up – Sale #28 on this year’s map, 5612 California SW – but only two showed up, without any of the others sending word they were canceling. Nonetheless, you’ll find good coffee as well as those two sellers, one of whom is Marie, out front:

IMG_4449

From the inbox at garagesale@westseattleblog.comSale #97 sends greetings and a panorama from East Admiral, 3022 38th SW:

IMG_5677

10:50 AM: We’re in The Junction to check on the Hotwire Coffee/Ginomai Art Center multi-seller site, Sales #193 and #194 at California/Genesee/42nd, lots going on, and cool people including Jessie:

IMG_4452

The morning’s most prolific shower is moving through right now. Many sellers today have garages, tents, overhangs, or at least tarps, so hang in there. Among the garage sales with actual garages, Sale #210 on Genesee Hill at 4122 52nd SW. We just visited:

IMG_4456

11:10 AM: We’ve now wandered toward Alki, which has more sales this year than years past. We’re noticing intrepid garage salers carrying on despite the rain, which is coming up out of the south. This year’s westernmost sale is Sale #290, 3020 Alki SW. Pulling up, we see they have an array of patio umbrellas over their tables – creative way to cope with the showeriness!

IMG_4458

They have an assortment of sunglasses too, and are repeat WSCGSD sellers – WTG!

At Sale #45 (5454 45th SW), a tarp has been deployed, according to this photo just tweeted our way:

11:34 AM: Sale #333 at 6335 40th SW has gone into rain-delay mode – they’re selling books and those don’t do too well in the rain, which hasn’t stopped yet. (We’re still in the Alki area, and it’s fairly light.) In the Westwood area, Sale #149 (8133 32nd SW) invites you to come check out items including this Breville juicer from Williams Sonoma:

IMG_6751

FitBits and a Wii Fit, too. (Added, an update – everything now half-off, “make an offer”!)

NOON: The rain has definitely stopped. Sun’s trying to break through here by Don Armeni, where we made a side trip to check out another one-day-only event under way in the area:

We’re headed to northeastern West Seattle. Keep the photos coming – garagesale@westseattleblog.com. We’ve received a couple with refreshment-sellers trying to catch the passing WSCGSD traffic – below, from the 6600 block of Holly Place:

IMG_0528
Our next stop, the West Seattle Tool Library, Sale #312 at 4408 Delridge Way SW, on the northeast side of Youngstown Cultural Arts Center:

IMG_4460 (1)

At this halfway point of official selling hours during West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, the Tool Library tells us they’ve sold half their WSCGSD inventory already.

12:33 PM: Just uphill from Youngstown, Sale #320 is at 4546 23rd SW. Unique items at this one include kayaks and stuffed critters:

IMG_4463

Via Twitter, a shopper report just in – from @vdoyle:

vdoyle

The caption: “Best find of the day, taxidermy coho salmon!”

Meantime, in North Delridge, we visited Sale #328 at 2502 SW Hudson, which includes items from a recent remodel, such as cabinetry and a dishwasher:

IMG_4464

Then, up Snake Hill to High Point. Sale #151 at 6003 29th SW in High Point is also raising $ for the Kumamoto Earthquake Fund:

IMG_4467

In our photo are Corrina and Madelyn. We’re turning back east again to visit another benefit sale, at Sanislo Elementary, Sale #331 (1812 SW Myrtle).

1:21 PM: Everything at the Sanislo sale benefits the school, and they’ve still got a lot of great stuff that has to go. Clothes:

More from the inbox – Sale #87 in Gatewood, 6741 38th Ave SW, has a tent and remains “open for business”!

1:50 PM: Another shower’s moving through Westwood, where we found an indoor sale, at Daystar Retirement Village, Sale #105, 2615 SW Barton (south entrance). “Vintage music cassettes”:

cassettesdaystar

Friendly cat, too (not for sale):

catfancy

2:25 PM: Half an hour to go! Still treasures to be found. We heard from Tamsen, who reports, “Loved finding these embroidered tabletop runners and vintage cream whipper and vases.”

Maybe the portable karaoke machine at Sale #254 (4711 48th Ave SW) is what you’re looking for:

You never know what you’ll find.

3 PM: And the curtain falls on the first semi-soggy WSCGSD ever. Thanks to everybody who sold and shopped anyway – if there’s anything you’re really hoping to find a new owner for rather than putting it back in the garage or basement or wherever, you can try the Freebies/Sales/Deals section of the WSB Forums. And of course, as mentioned earlier, there are donation drives waiting in the hours and even days ahead to accept certain items as part of the post-WSCGSD give-a-thon – they’re listed here.

P.S. Thanks to Sale #59 in Fauntleroy for this time-lapse:

(Awaiting you at Sale #58, which just sent this photo while setting up)

Good morning and welcome to West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016! Looks like our longrunning streak of sunny WSCGSDs is taking a break this year, but Northwest hardiness shall prevail; take a sweater – or maybe you’ll find one at a sale! The basics, one more time:

*320+ sales all over West Seattle, all mapped in two ways:

(Sale #3 just sent this photo after setting up)

Online map: Get it here – click any line on the right-side list to open a sale’s info-bubble with its description, and/or maneuver around the map (zoom in/out controls are at the lower right) to explore a specific area, and click a marker to open that sale’s info-bubble. Search for sales mentioning a particular term (clothes, toys, tools, etc.) by clicking the search icon at top right on the map and choosing “description” as the area to search.

Printable/downloadable map: Get it here (19-page PDF) – it includes all sale listings in numerical order (each sale has the same number on both versions of the map) and map sections north to south.

Our final preview published early today on westseattlegaragesale.com has a variety of lists, including block sales; we’ve also published a list of benefit sales.

2016051495075153
(Added – overview of Hotwire courtyard as setup continues)

And a reminder that the annual multi-seller sites are the courtyard/lot at #193/#194 Hotwire/Ginomai (California/Genesee) and #28 C & P Coffee (5612 California SW).

Sellers who want to donate unsold items later today rather than putting them back away – or buyers who want to do a good deed and purchase items to donate! – will find options here (including book and clothing drives benefiting local schools).

Questions? Photo to share from your sale or your shopping journey? We’ll be monitoring the WSCGSD mailbox at garagesale@westseattleblog.com all day while out covering the sales.

P.S. Don’t forget to put out your bag of nonperishable food for the letter carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive before you shop or sell! We’re finishing ours right now.

CONGRATULATIONS! West Seattle High School wins Metro League softball championship for the first time

9:02 PM: The West Seattle High School Wildcats, coached by WSHS athletic director Trevor Leopold, have just won the Metro League softball championship for the first time ever, beating Ballard 5-2.

trophy2

They were behind 2-1 going into the top of the sixth, when winning pitcher Gabby Wenn hit a leadoff homer to tie it up, and her teammates added three more runs.

ADDED 11:55 PM: Wenn’s performance seemed inevitable, as she was honored before the game as Metro League MVP.

wswenn

But for a while, it wasn’t clear that this rematch of last year’s Metro title game would end with a Westside win (last year, the Beavers won, 3-1).

Things started well: West Seattle’s #4, Lucy Mead, hit a leadoff triple off Ballard pitcher Lauren King.

wslucymead

#9, Sofia Sallas, sacrificed to bring her in, and it was quickly 1-0 Wildcats.

But that’s all the scoring WSHS did until the sixth.

Ballard, meantime, got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first, with Hannah Schubert hitting for both RBI’s, and that was it for the Beavers’ scoring for the entire game.

The second inning was three up, three down for both sides. The third also went relatively quickly except for a WSHS single by Sallas.

Moving on to the fourth, the game was intense but not tense. The between-innings tune was Neil Diamond’s 196x classic “Sweet Caroline,” and the WSHS girls sang along boisterously. Leadoff batter #13, Brynn Snodgrass, made it to second base on a Ballard bobble. She wasn’t easy to keep there:

ws13wssnodgrass

But Ballard’s subsequent fielding eventually left Snodgrass stranded. The Beavers also got one runner on in the bottom of the fourth and left her stranded too.

The pattern repeated in the fifth – each team getting one player on base, but leaving her there; the Wildcats’ Mead hit a solid single to right field; Ballard’s Elizabeth Breckow bunted to get on base. But by the end of five, it was still Ballard 2, West Seattle 1.

That’s when everything changed, starting with Wenn’s leadoff homer off King. Snodgrass then hit a single to left field; #1, Berit Syltebo, sacrificed to get Snodgrass to second; then #16, Emma Atkinson, smacked a triple to center field, bringing Snodgrass in and giving WSHS the lead, 3-2.

Ballard changed pitchers, to #10, Megan Quigley-McAlister, but that didn’t stop WSHS.

wsgrossi

Next up was #2, Rosa Grossi, who battled Quigley-McAlister in a big way before finally getting to first and bringing Atkinson in. Grossi in turn scored on Mead’s hit to center field, advancing the score to what became the final an inning and a half later, 5-2.

Now it’s on to the district tournament for the Wildcats, with their first game at 6 pm Tuesday (vs. either Seattle Prep or Bainbridge) at the Southeast Athletic Complex.

BIZNOTES: Tony’s opens Saturday; Capitol Loans closes; Junction Fitness

Three West Seattle biznotes tonight:

TONY’S MARKET OPENS TOMORROW: After weeks of questions about when Tony’s Market at 35/Barton would open, we reported two weeks ago that people we found working at the site expected it would be within about a week and a half away. OK, the wait was a little longer, but now it’s almost over. Thanks to Cheri for the tip – she told us this afternoon that market proprietor Joey Genzale told her tomorrow is opening day; we subsequently stopped by to confirm it. From Saturday on, Tony’s will be open daily, 9 am-7 pm.

CAPITOL LOANS IS CLOSED: Thanks to the texter who tipped us to this one:

We went over and found signs posted in every window saying that loans can “be redeemed at the new location in Preston” (in east King County) and new loans are being handled at the company’s Capitol Hill store until the Preston location is ready to do that. The now-closed West Seattle location is on land at 4754 Fauntleroy Way SW for which a mixed-use development is planned, as first reported here in December and updated last month when the apartment count (now 133) and parking-space count (now 134) both went up. The project will have to go through Design Review, but there’s no date yet for the first meeting.

JUNCTION FITNESS: What had been Snap Fitness on the 42nd SW side of outer Jefferson Square since 2008 is now Junction Fitness. Donald Ward is the new owner of the 24/7 gym, now an independently owned gym. He says his journey started there as a member under the previous ownership; then he became manager, and now is the owner. As a West Seattle resident, his bio says, he “knew that West Seattle was the area to open his) very own gym, and help the community reach their fitness goals. A strong believer in providing the best customer service to the community, and a strong supporter of locally owned businesses. If you don’t catch Donald training his clients, you can catch him working the front desk, mopping/cleaning, or getting a workout himself… he is for sure a ‘hands-on’ owner that will bend over backward to keep his members happy.” Junction Fitness is at 4714 42nd SW.

Good thing The Viaduct’s open again: Filming next week

In a week or so, you might see something unusual on the Alaskan Way Viaduct that has nothing to do with tunneling: The city announced this afternoon that “a major film production” will shoot in Seattle for six days between May 19th and 26th, including filming that will lead to “rolling slowdowns” on the Viaduct. The announcement explains, “Traffic is never completely stopped, but there will be brief periods where it will be slowed to follow the production as it moves along the Viaduct. Production will take place intermittently outside of peak driving hours, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on May 19, 2016 – May 26, 2016.” Scenes also will be filmed in Pioneer Square. The city’s announcement doesn’t identify the film; Office of Film and Music spokesperson Joe Mirabella says, “The City’s longstanding policy is to keep the name of the project confidential until after filming is complete.” (We’ve looked around a bit but haven’t found an obvious match yet.)

P.S. Our archives show a mention of similar filming back in 2010.

FOLLOWUP: Gray whale seen off West Seattle two weeks ago has died

The gray whale first seen off West Seattle two weeks ago, moving slowly and seeming sick, didn’t survive, we’ve just learned. You’ll recall that our local Marine Mammal Stranding Network, Seal Sitters, reported that researchers had assessed it and would provide an update – none followed, though, until this word that the whale was found dead and towed north for a necropsy. We received this news release from NOAA Fisheries:

A team from Cascadia Research Collective completed a necropsy Thursday afternoon on a juvenile gray whale that had been swimming injured through Puget Sound for about two weeks before dying over the weekend. Results and photos of the necropsy are available on the Cascadia website.

You can jump to that here – the photos are not gory; the cause of death isn’t known yet but Cascadia says the whale was a juvenile female, in a “highly unusual condition” when first found before it died.

Ahead, the NOAA news release continues: Read More

Signs of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016, hours away!

While out on an errand a little while ago, had our first sighting of a sign for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day:

IMG_3597

#27 is on the benefit-sale list, by the way, raising money for a Kiwanis camp that serves people with disabilities. Another sale promotion we just noticed – #20 started its own Twitter account:

If you start one, be sure to tag us – @westseattleblog – so we can follow you!

The big day is now about 18 hours away – 9 am-3 pm Saturday, with more than 320 sales on the map (which we set up as WSCGSD’s official coordinators since the 4th annual event in 2008), usable in two ways – the clickable version is here (click any line on the list, or any marker on the map, to open a bubble with its address and description) – and the downloadable/printable 19-page-PDF version is here.

Many sellers repeat year after year and tell us they most enjoy meeting and talking with neighbors during their sales – so even if you just walk or bike around a bit, enjoy the chance to mingle. And don’t miss the two mega-multi-seller sites, Hotwire/Ginomai (#193 and #194, 4410 California SW and 4200 42nd SW) and C & P Coffee (#28 at 5612 California SW). We will be covering WSCGSD “live” as it unfolds, so keep watching for updates.

UPDATE: 108-home West Seattle power outage over in Arroyos after 24 hours

2:04 PM: Just checked after a tip, and the Seattle City Light outage map confirms 108 customers (homes) are without electricity in The Arroyos (and part of south Arbor Heights), as of about 20 minutes ago. We’re checking – more to come.

3:17 PM: SCL says the cause of the outage is “equipment failure.” Their current guesstimate for restoration is just before 6 pm – but please remember that it’s only a guess; might happen later, or sooner.

11:26 PM: After almost 10 hours, the outage continues, and the restoration guesstimate is now 4:40 am.

2:50 PM SATURDAY: After 24 hours, the outage ended a short time ago, per a tweet from Kate.

The future of the Myers Way Parcels – 30+ acres of city-owned land on the southeastern edge of West Seattle – may be decided by the end of the year.

Updates on the timetable and process were part of the discussion as a group organized by City Councilmember Lisa Herbold toured the site on Thursday. Among them, two staffers from the city Finance and Administrative Services department, which is responsible for city-owned real estate like this, a site that’s been considered for many things, even, in 2008, the municipal jail that ultimately never got built.

The city didn’t even want most of this land when it was purchased back in the early 2000s, FAS’s Hillary Hamilton and Michael Ashbrook explained – just 10 acres for the nearby Joint Training Facility, which is in plain view next door to the north:

Then-owner Nintendo of America would only sell the entire 50-acre parcel, so that’s what the city bought.

Now it is stuck in a multi-faceted tug-of-war:
