The “Top 10 New Restaurants” featured in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine‘s November issue include 2 from West Seattle: Beato and Bakery Nouveau. So says (206) Life, as linked from Citizen Rain.

Ugh. Enough about Bakery Nouveau – it’s terrible – and highly overrated.

  • donald October 23, 2007 (7:52 pm)

    So is Beato.

  • k October 23, 2007 (8:46 pm)

    i disagree.

  • roddy October 23, 2007 (9:26 pm)

bet there are just a *few* people who disagree!

BN makes it fresh daily, but how is it classified as a “Restaraunt”.

  • chas redmond October 23, 2007 (10:52 pm)

BN has sandwiches and quiches and pizzas and they offer a sit down area with a choice of beverages. In the Winter months (at least based on last year) they offer a very fine French onion soup from noon through mid-afternoon. I’m not sure what else you would call BN if not a restaurant – what, a bakery which offers sit-down food? Is Grateful Bread a restaurant or a bakery? Is BN a restaurant or a bakery? Both are a bit of both. I’ve often wondered, though, what a fancy linen table in William’s West Seattle Bistro would be like as a dining and people-watching venue, should he want to open a “restaurant” and still keep his bakery – cum – restaurant.

WS needs a real bbq place, a REAL Vietnamese place that serves MORE than over-salted, over MSG’d soup.. (without having to go down to White Center, where there are at least 3 GREAT ones I love)….another steak place (that DOES take reservations)…and another Breakfast/lunch place (Julia’s please..)

and..THANK YOU ShoeFly Pie company. The Key Lime pie is pure heavenly bliss.

  • Jan October 23, 2007 (11:58 pm)

mmmmm….key lime pie…gonna have to go and add to the hips :)

  • Jan October 23, 2007 (11:59 pm)

oh, and grrrr…it’s Shoofly…as in, get away, bug…not as in…dead bug on my sole….lol

  • villagegreen October 24, 2007 (9:22 am)

grr, which vietnamese places do you love in White Center? I’ve been looking for a great place that’s closer than going all the way to the ID. Thanks!

I personally think WS has breakfast covered: Easy Street, Skylark, Circa, Blackbird, Luna Park, etc. However, an all night diner would be awesome. Seattle as a whole seems to be lacking in that area.

  • Elizabeth October 24, 2007 (11:08 am)

These places are both great. Beato is decidedly more “haute cuisine”, but it’s so nice to have one restaurant in W. Seattle with really well crafted, finely prepared food. I think the place intimidates a lot of people, but it really shouldn’t. It may not be for every day dining, but the staff is super-friendly and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food and wine. Give it a try.

  • TD October 24, 2007 (12:41 pm)

Bakery Nouveau is – the best thing to have happened to West Seattle – restaurant, bakery – who cares! – the place is the bomb! When your car drives itself there – you know you’re in trouble.

  • Jenny October 24, 2007 (1:31 pm)

Hubby & I both miss Taste of Vietnam. A little hole-in-the-wall next door (almost) to Natureway, and is now that drive-thru espresso shop.

The 88 Restaurant on Delridge a block or two N. of Roxbury has some great food. (But they seem to close early in the evening.)

I cannot agree with you more, grr. The Than Brothers on California is far too bland and pales in comparison to the vietnamese fare in White Center.

I love Pho 99 (9828 15th Ave SW) even though they do not offer the requisite side cream puff. My favorite place for vietnamese sandwiches is Huong Xua White Center Deli (9629 16th Ave SW)–$2.00 for a chicken sandwich.

  • Sandy October 24, 2007 (3:32 pm)

Thought Beato was overpriced for nothing special, wouldn’t be inclined to go back.

Bakery Nouveau is good, but I wouldn’t wait in line outside for it : )

  • whoosh October 24, 2007 (5:43 pm)

I had a BLT from Bakery Nouveau for breakfast today. Mmmm. Also ate at Ama Ama last night! It’s a great addition to the Junction and I’m already looking forward to returning.

  • WS Native October 24, 2007 (6:09 pm)

TD is right. Andy is… misled. Now, I liked Joe Banana’s or The High Hat or Penny’s Doghouse just as much as the next aging local, but Bakery Nouveau is, seriously, the best thing since sliced bread.

  • Kayleigh October 24, 2007 (6:50 pm)

Wow, I remember Joe Banana’s! Big skinny pieces of pizza and wasn’t there a fountain or something in the middle of the place?

  • grr October 25, 2007 (10:12 am)

Pho99 is our first -goto- for Vietnamese in W.C. There’s two others..but..I don’t know their names..we just drive there! One is really close to HengHeng market..the other is sort of near the aquarium store.

haven’t been to Beato yet..suppose I should try it.

Luna Park…I always forget to go there for bfst. duh.

…speaking of the I.D…WS needs a Dim Sum Place!!!!

and..yeah..sorry for my ShoEfly typo…lololol…can’t wait to see what they do with Pumpkin Pie…

  • grr October 25, 2007 (10:17 am)

And..as long as we’re talkin’ food here.. I ASSUME all of you get your wine from Bear, Jan, and Tom at West Seattle Wine Cellars in the Morgan Junction, RIGHT!?!??!?!

    :)

  • Gatewood too October 25, 2007 (10:26 am)

West Seattle Wine Cellars… as in… free tastings every Thursday night (yes, it gets crowded!), the ‘specials’ boxes under the tasting bar where 8 bucks buys you something your friends will think you spent 20+ on, their excellent wine clubs, frequent discounts, very casual, approachable, “we can find and order you anything” attitude… gotta love it!

  • JumboJim October 25, 2007 (11:14 am)

Wow, you mean the Wine Cellars actually opens sometimes?? Nearly every time I go by its closed. I just figured they were aging the wine by preventing people from buying it…

  • JumboJim October 25, 2007 (11:17 am)

P.S. I agree Bakery Nouveau is overrated. I admit my sample size of their product is too small yet, but some of the stuff (like croissants) are soggy on the bottom and *way* too sweet.

For an almond croissant that is near perfect try the french bakery in Pike Place Market – sorry I forget its name.

  • grr October 25, 2007 (4:44 pm)

jim..come by for a free tasting on thursday nights and check the hours open posted on the door :)

  • Bug'sBFF October 25, 2007 (5:08 pm)

Beato is great! The food is wonderful! If you love wine, you should love Beato too… Service is spectacular. Heard the head chef Nick(. )( .) Devine might be leaving. Hope the ever changing menus stay delicious. Check it out sometime!
    Peace,
    JJKB

  • Coffee Gurl October 25, 2007 (5:13 pm)

Has anyone actually met the owner of BN? I think he’s getting a little too big for his bakery britches. He needs to remember, we’re a small community and it’s us ‘little folk’ who are making him rich.

  • grr October 25, 2007 (8:22 pm)

not me, c.g…he’s probably too busy.

  • Keith October 25, 2007 (10:38 pm)

I’ve never met the owner of Bakery N. but all the staff I’ve encountered there have been extremely friendly, even when there’s a giant crowd of customers.

  • WSB October 25, 2007 (10:46 pm)

We’ve had some good experiences there recently too. We hadn’t been in quite some time and the crowds were a little daunting but we’ve noted that weekdays, midmorning, things aren’t too crazed. Besides the baked goods and sandwiches, their lattes are very nice — reminiscent of Uptown.

  • grr October 25, 2007 (11:34 pm)

“their lattes are very nice — reminiscent of Uptown.”

I don’t think BN would take that as a compliment :)

  • Jen V. October 27, 2007 (11:23 am)

we checked out Ama Ama for happy hour last night. Way to go! what a great place. I miss Ovio, but Ama Ama more than makes up for it. they even kept the same chef! The service was really great, too – they accommodated our table of seven even thought they knew we were not eating dinner- only drinks and appetizers. The clams in the pancetta cream were transcendent. I hope this incarnation in the old Godfather’s makes it. The decor totally kicks a$$ as well.

  • WS Junctionite October 28, 2007 (8:02 am)

Tried out Ama Ama Friday night, we waited for over a half hour after ordering only to have our server come back to tell us our order had been lost. We ended up going next door for thai.

Will probably try again, but this didn’t really impress.

  • grr November 11, 2007 (10:43 am)

finally made it to Ama Ama…food was pretty tasty, and the service was spot on..Looks like they’re worked out the kinks.

  • Rita Pelley January 13, 2008 (3:05 pm)

I don’t think West Seattle has breakfast covered!! Have you tried to get into a Restaurant on the Weekends! And parking, HA! When you have a handicapped person with you it ain’t easy!

  • Thuy December 11, 2008 (10:24 pm)

Really? There is disabled parking right next to this one place in White Center, Huong White Center Deli is my favorite Vietnamese deli. The food is cheap and it tastes great.

Sorry, comment time is over.
