Just south of the booming Cali/Charlestown intersection, on the east side of Cali between Belli Capelli and Moxie, two neighboring houses are both destined to make way for townhouse clumps. Construction and demolition permits have just been issued for 3910 Cali (which is so tree-obscured, we couldn’t get a photo); probably not far behind is neighboring 3906 (shown below), where progress is listed on the DPD site as “reviews completed.”

Two big events of note for our neighborhood high schools:

-Tomorrow night is the annual West Seattle High School Foundation spring dinner/play event, starting with a 5:15 reception at the church next door, dinner in the WSHS Commons @ 6:30, and the WSHS performance of “Carousel” @ 8. -Further out, Chief Sealth HS is planning a party @ Camp Long Lodge, 7 pm June 5, to celebrate the school’s International Baccalaureate accreditation. All welcome for tunes & treats, organizers say.

The latest phase of the Cali repaving continues to march north; while two-thirds of the blacktop is now replaced on the south end of the work zone, removal work is heating up from PCC northward, and now the area is on alert that Cali’s intersections with three more streets will be blocked off at various times over the next week or so: Hanford, Lander, Stevens.

A commenter on this post asked if anyone had a photo of John Hartley (popular local waiter who died suddenly last week) to share; Jessie from Skylark kindly sent the one you see below. Just too good a photo to cut down to a head shot. Jessie also says that, while the date is not yet set — it’ll be sometime in mid-June — there will definitely be an official benefit, featuring at least six bands, to raise money for John’s family. Meantime, reminder that the service for John is 10 am this Saturday @ Burien Free Methodist Church.Ã‚Â (And the official obituary has just appeared @ NWsource.com.)

We had seen the “for sale” signs at the “Koze” store/house next door but didn’t realize till an e-mail tip that Carosello Coffee (the location’s latest incarnation) on 35thÃ‚Â is for sale too. Interesting caveat in the listing fine print forwarded by our tipster (or is this par for the course with business listings?) — “DO NOT DISCUSS SALE WITH EMPLOYEES!”

UPDATE: West Seattle Mag has some on-the-ground shots of the police search. KING5 has video on their web site showing the K-9 unit’s part in the chase and KIRO-TV has added some new shots to the slideshow mentioned here.
KIRO TV has a slide show of the police search here. Reportedly the robber is now believed to have gotten away.

UPDATE: The Seattle Times is reporting that supposedly the tellers at the US Bank at 4200 SW Edmunds received a note demanding cash at 12:30 this afternoon. The story also says, “the suspect is ‘hunkered down’ in the area around Southwest Brandon Street and 46th Avenue Southwest.”
King5 TV is reporting this on its web site.

West Seattle bank robbery – Seattle Police have surrounded a home in the 4600 block of SW Brandon Street in West Seattle where they believe a bank robber is holed up. More details to come.

For those who use Morgan/Sylvan to get between east and west WS, there’s word from the city’s Neighborhood District Coordinator that the construction company is now targeting mid-June for the upcoming summertime road closure — two weeks later than the most recent plan.

Too bad we didn’t get this note before a van almost broadsided us coming off a side street onto a south-WS arterial this morning: A reader notes that if you see a driver doing something heinous, you can post the plate at Platewire.com, which is celebrating its first anniversary today. The reader writes, “Having nearly been hit in the croswalk (with stroller) up at Admiral and 41st, being constantly subjected to delirious speeders up Admiral, and having neighbors who have been hit while legally crossing at crosswalks, I’ve had it. There’s only so much that posted signs and occasional enforcement can do.”

Yes, the weekend’s over so the sun is back; gotta love Seattle in May. Besides the simple pleasures, like beach-walking when you get home from work, here are a couple happenings of note this week:

-The Taste of West Seattle is tomorrow night, with more than a dozen WS restaurants and caterers participating. Proceeds benefit Helpline; you can buy advance tickets from the Helpline home page (look for the PayPal button on the left side) for $5 less than the cost at the door.

-ArtsWest opens its world premiere “commedia dell’arte style” adaptation of “Pinocchio” on Thursday.
