West Seattle Crime Watch: Second-floor break-in

Just got a note from a Highland Park resident who wanted to alert people to the break-in at her home near 16th and Cloverdale (map)- read on for details:

Took place during daytime hours on Friday July 17.

Details–Second floor window screen slashed, suspect kids climbed up over front entry to get to stoop roof, then pushed slider to make six-inch gap (instead of four-inch gap), entered house, opened drawers, took a bunch of earrings, bracelets, glasses, rings, a Sony Walkman CD player and a lemonade. Nothing of “real” monetary value–but a couple items of sentimental value. Seems as if they were kids and in a big hurry.

Sewed up screen and found longer, sturdier stick to secure slider. Total items taken probably about $300 max, so really nothing else to do about it.

Talked with neighbors. They all knew other people who had the same thing happen to them. If I get started listing what was taken, or talking about how I feel about it, I will never stop, so–I’ll spare you any more.

You said other neighbors had the same thing happen to them. Around the same time? How many people? I live just a block away and haven’t heard anything around here like that happening recently. So sorry you had this happen to you. I’m assuming no one saw anything?

Thanks for letting the Blog know. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I have and will continue to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

As for the other poster, I don’t know any other recent ones, but 3 years ago another neighbor was robbed and the perps caught (3 asian kids) and that’s the only other ones I heard about.

The people on our left said their sister in law –I think she lives on 18th- had the same thing happen. The kids heard her come in and left. The people on our right knew people who had it happen in Skyway. The people to the right of them had their garage broken into –I think last summer? The house on the corner across from them was broken into, but I don’t know when. Special hello to my neighbor-across-the-street, who is one of THE best–thank you so much for your support, and thanks to the Blog, too! It is VERY comforting to know one is surrounded by great folks like you:)

I live down the street from where this took place. Any updates?

actually my husband mentioned that it was a house farther down the block, towards Trenton, instead of the one by where the garage was broken into last summer. Sorry about that.
I’m so paranoid now about leaving the house–I keep checking to make sure it’s all closed up, and I put some things they didn’t get, into the safe deposit box at the bank today. I’m so thankful that our one really special ring, and some of my Dad’s things were already safely there!!!!

“Roof rat” alert–not the small furry kind, but the human boys kind. A concerned neighbor told me that two young boys were going around tne neighborhood, up and down the alley, climbing over walls, and getting up on rooftops. Don’t know if this is connected to the above, or not–but it can’t be too safe. Let’s all kind of keep an eye out for little guys on the rooftops! Thanks!

Sorry, comment time is over.
