West Seattle Crime Watch: Car break-in, with an aftermath tip

Out of the WSB inbox a little while ago, from Kara, a car break-in report that ends with a tip we haven’t heard before – read on:

Kara writes:

My car was just broken into tonight [Sunday] and the thieves took off with my face plate and caused some pricey damage to my door and center console. They did not actually get the stereo. The incident took place on 20th Ave Sw and Thistle just off of Delridge [map]. Luckily, my neighbor heard the noises and chased the dimwits off before they caused any more damage. Can’t thank them enough for that. No one got a good look at them but what we do know is that it is 3 males with poofy jackets and hoodies that took off in separate directions. Just wanted to let you know so that we can make sure everyone stays alert and keeps their cars parked in well-lit areas.

Also, the police gave me a good tip. After a car prowl incident that has just recently happened, stay as far from the car as possible so the K-9 unit can get a good smell. That includes standing around the doors looking for damage. Hopefully, all the pressure that these thieves get from all the posts and the block watches popping up, they will switch careers to something more productive.

Don’t have a block watch yet? Maybe you want to start organizing the neighbors by planning a block party for Night Out, which is coming up Tuesday, August 4 – deadline to register your party, so you can close the street, is July 31; here’s the place to start.

Good to know. Thanks for the information. Just wanted to add that our car was broken into on 7/6 or early 7/7 and they actually came back the next night.

Car at our home at 45th & Alaska was broken into on 7/4 during the day. Broke out side window, stole a brief case with company checks & Amex. Within a few hours they got gas and attempted a $5k on-line Best Buy purchase. Unfortunate rule I have to remember after just moving from the burbs to the active city (especailly the Junction) is do not leave ANYTHING visible in your car. This is my third car break in in one year.
1st time- car loaded with docation items and a brand new hedge trimmer, I was too tired to bring in the house.
2nd time- our kids left an IPOD on front seat.

I did meet a great mobile glass unit that was out the next morning. Cleaned up the mess, very reasonable ($200).

I really hope Seattle can fall off the list of the cities with the most car prowls per capita – but I’m not sure it will anytime soon.

do tell about who you used for the mobile glass unit?

Hmmm. Puffy coats and hooded (pun intended) sweatshirts…in the middle of summer. Why am I not surprised!

We used All-Star. Came within 45 minutes, cleaned up all the glass, and did a great job. Cost was $180 for a rear passenger window, but we have a $50 deductable. Its time to set up a sting!

Sorry, comment time is over.
