West Seattle snow: Widespread power outages (including WSB HQ)

(photo of official WSB “outages can’t stop us” setup added 11:41 pm)
ORIGINAL 10:46 PM POST: Our power’s out too, but we have laptop power backups and two forms of wireless Internet, so we will continue reporting on the storm and its effects. Can’t see lights anywhere around, for a couple blocks north on California from Thistle, or eastbound up Thistle, or down the hill. Also got a text message saying power is out in North Shorewood. Several other areas posted comments about power flickers shortly before this outage – which followed several LONG flickers (power on for a moment, off for a few seconds, repeat, repeat). More to come. There are numerous outages listed on the City Light page now.

10:58 PM UPDATE: We’ve closed the earlier post; this one will be our overnight storm coverage post, with the power outage the biggest story right now, but also feel free to post about anything else storm-related, and we will add whatever else we find out, too. Hauling out the battery-operated hand-held TV (which won’t work after next month’s DTV transition, darn) to check on 11 pm news. Also got this snow note from Celeste:

A fire truck just tried to go up 40th between Genesee and Dakota got stuck maybe a third of the way up the hill and had to back down and go up Genesee.

TV news just quoted City Light as reporting “four separate outages” totaling about 4,000 customers (hmm, the City Light site lists more than that), with the West Seattle-Burien outage being the biggest one.

11:07 PM UPDATE: The comment section is reporting outage zones faster than we can repost them here, so be sure to keep an eye there too. We’re also watching Twitter; Hopey here in West Seattle tweeted that KING5 reported “a little salt” is mixed in with the sand that’s being used on roads tonight. In addition to what’s in the comments, we’ve received e-mail from the Westwood Village vicinity, where The House is in the dark, and Ann from Full Tilt Ice Cream in White Center tells us friends on Vashon lost their power around 9:30 tonight. Seems a lot of us (comments indicate this too) saw flashes before the outage – if it was lightning, sure didn’t hear thunder. Looks like at this point the south half of West Seattle is hit hardest, generalizing from comments, tweets, FB.

11:40 PM UPDATE: Just stepped outside. Snow seems to have stopped. No rain falling either but it SOUNDS like rain – the snow falling off the branches, slipping off the roof, the branches, etc.

12:04 AM UPDATE: No official outage info yet. Here’s a link you might find interesting if you’re wondering about your fridge full of food (that was our only loss back in the ’06 multi-day outage) – a Red Cross info-sheet we linked to before the windstorm-that-wasn’t last month. A radio report says the outages total more than 19,000 customers (homes/businesses) around the city and may not be resolved before morning. Meantime, a few more photos we were in the process of getting to, before the outage shifted the emphasis away from the snow – this one from MarkB at 41st/Dakota:

From Chas Redmond in Gatewood:

Looking ahead at practicalities for the morning: Metro continues to update its “adverse weather” page with changes; find it here. (We’ll start a new morning-commute post later, but this one will keep going overnight for power updates etc.)

12:40 PM UPDATE: City Light’s update line went through a long list of outages but didn’t list this particular one. So we’re on hold to see if we can get a live person with their latest guesstimate on restoration. Of the ones around the city that WERE listed on the line, estimated restoration time was either 3 am or 6 am. So don’t expect power back on soon.

1:08 AM UPDATE: Good news and bad news. Good news, the plow that Mike mentioned in comments, southbound on California from Morgan Junction, is the big yellow snow-clearing grader that the city started deploying about midway through the December snow – we just saw it at California/Thistle. Bad news, we finally got a live person at SCL who said there’s no specific estimated time of restoration yet for the outage we’re in the middle of (the biggest one in WS). P.S. Radio says more than 2,000 are powerless on Vashon – we mentioned their outage earlier, and have visual confirmation via our “peek view” that no lights are visible on north Vashon (aside from those of docked ferries).

2:07 AM UPDATE: No new word on the outage status. A few more photos to share, though. First, before the snow’s all gone, a few more scenes: First, a snowman by Lauren Jacobs, home from college:

Next, a Japanese maple coated in snow, from Frank in Westwood:

Those two came in earlier tonight — but this one just arrived in the WSB inbox a short time ago, from Karen in Hansen View (south of Providence Mount St. Vincent):

Karen explains:

Was about to call it a night a few minutes ago & then noticed through one of our windows that a giant limb on the neighbor’s birch tree was missing. It had broken off & fallen between our two houses! We have no idea how it did so without anyone hearing it. Amazingly, it didn’t take out our fence & it didn’t seem to damage either house…

26th and holden out…thank goodness for the Blackberry! Power went out, first thing we said “get the candles and check the blog!”

  • dana. January 4, 2009 (10:51 pm)

just saw a plow headed NB on 35th. still powerless at 35th and barton.

  • Josh January 4, 2009 (10:51 pm)

Our power blinked out for a few moments in the Highland Park neighborhood, on 16th, south of the 7-11. After it came back on, my wife and I saw a big flash of light through our window.

At the corner of 16th & Kenyon, a snow-covered tree is weighing down a snow-covered power line. I tried to report it to the hotline (206-684-7400), but for some reason, it wouldn’t leave me a message. It directed me to another number (206-706-0051), but the line was busy. Some system!

  • John wallace January 4, 2009 (10:52 pm)

Power out here at Webster and 29th. Same flickering as main post.

  • Josh January 4, 2009 (10:52 pm)

Pardon. That should have read “it wouldn’t let me leave a message.”

  • aaron January 4, 2009 (10:53 pm)

is the power on at thriftway

  • kal-hell January 4, 2009 (10:56 pm)

1/2 of the Westridge Apts out, but only the back ones across the bridge.

  • roundthesound January 4, 2009 (10:57 pm)

    Has anyone seen lightning?

  • KevinE January 4, 2009 (10:57 pm)

@ the top of gatewood – no power anywhere around. We hear lots of sirens, however.

  • dawn211 January 4, 2009 (10:59 pm)

I saw three flashes followed by explosions about 20 minutes ago at 35th & Findlay. Power is on.

  • shane January 4, 2009 (11:00 pm)

I’m at 26th and Holden and on a blackberry too…how funny

  • Amos January 4, 2009 (11:01 pm)

I was looking out the window (at around 10:30) and saw 4 flashes of light
and heard 4 loud booms from the north (from High Point) — don’t think it was lightning,

  • miws January 4, 2009 (11:02 pm)

aaron, Power looks like it’s fully on at Thriftway.

    .

I’m in the same block, other side of the street. We didn’t have any flickers, though the lights under the Shell gas pumps awning went out and took several minutes to fully come back up.

    .

The streetlight inline with Shell’s price sign was out for a bit too, but that’s been cutting out for probably at least a month now (I reported it about that long ago). The weird thing was, is the streetlight just north of that was out at the same time.

    .

Lights inside the convenience store, Dominos and McDonalds all were on.

    .

    Mike

  • Scott January 4, 2009 (11:03 pm)

Lost power about 10:30 in 7500 block of 35th SW, but see streetlights just a block north and east. Same flickering outage that others mentioned.

  • dawn211 January 4, 2009 (11:06 pm)

KOMO just reported that most of the plows are being used in West & North Seattle.

Also that 7,000 are w/o power, 2,200 on Vashon.

  • jsrekd January 4, 2009 (11:07 pm)

Thriftway has power – we’re on 41st, just up the hill – the lights flickered, but we still have power, (so far) – our neighbors across the street (east) and up the hill (south, hi WSB!) are all out. 2″ of snow & counting.. KOMO just said there are 4,000 City Light customers without power and that they (SDOT) are already putting salt on the streets :-)

  • AlanA January 4, 2009 (11:11 pm)

No Comcast cable here in Gatewood (Webster & 35th); using the trusty Sprint Cell card for internet. Our power flickered several times around 10:30, went off briefly then came back. Anyone else experiencing the Comcast outage?

  • supernova72 January 4, 2009 (11:12 pm)

Just left the Alaska Junction. Power flickered for a minute and went black on Oregon and CA Ave. then came back on. Looks good now.

  • p January 4, 2009 (11:12 pm)

its switched to rain at 109th and 28th ave sw.

  • jsrekd January 4, 2009 (11:18 pm)

our Comcast is sill working – just SE of the thriftway

  • AlkiRagdoll January 4, 2009 (11:19 pm)

At Alki – we have power. Getting a mix of snow and rain. I’m praying that the temps stay where they are or raise even further,,,, missing those rainy winter days.

  • homedk January 4, 2009 (11:19 pm)

Fortunately we still have power, for the moment, but the powerlines are heavily laden with snow & are sagging…

The snow tonight seems much stickier than what we had recently; here near Camp Long it is sticking to the sides of our wooden fence & other vertical surfaces.

Still snowing here, but much more slowly.

  • naomi January 4, 2009 (11:20 pm)

Power out at 32nd and Webster. Heavy snow weighing down power lines.

  • JanS January 4, 2009 (11:23 pm)

lol..has anyone checked the traffic cams? The Fauntleroy/Alaska one has a nice view of the big dig for Whole Foods – lol

Power has been fine where I’m at in the Admiral District…

anyone know a rain dance that works?

  • LyndaB January 4, 2009 (11:25 pm)

i see wet pavement on the SB side of 35th after the plows. lights and comcast still on at 35th and juneau.

  • MichaelG January 4, 2009 (11:25 pm)

Power is on in No Admiral neighborhood…47th & Sunset.

  • M January 4, 2009 (11:31 pm)

Our Comcast internet died, we just got it back. Reset your modem and router, don’t forget to release and renew your external addresses on your router.

  • d January 4, 2009 (11:38 pm)

The snow has stopped in Highland Park.

  • snowlion January 4, 2009 (11:39 pm)

Power on in upper Fauntleroy, but we did have a few weird flickers that caused our fader lights to do odd things. I thought I was going nuts for a second, as it didn’t seem to affect our TV, but at least we HAVE power now. Looks like it’s starting to rain, at about midnight…

  • Matt January 4, 2009 (11:39 pm)

I’m near the Alaska Junction and it looks like the melt has begun. Snow is sliding off trees and I got covered in it when walking beneath one near my house. Grab an umbrella if you’re heading out there.

  • sks January 4, 2009 (11:42 pm)

Power out at 34th and 102nd. iPhone is working just fine.

  • Tony January 4, 2009 (11:43 pm)

Just as an FYI… I live just off of Delridge near Juneau and at around 10:30 saw 3 consecutive flashes light up the sky. Seems to have came from the transfer station, most likely the culprit of the outages.

  • ambc January 4, 2009 (11:43 pm)

Anyone know what condition Delridge is in? That is, if you can see it in the dark….

  • d January 4, 2009 (11:44 pm)

I hope our awesome WS photographers are out there grabbing some shots of the bare branches covered in snow which they will share. Some of these trees are incredibly beautiful here in HP. Dangerous and troublesome, I agree, but really lovely too.

  • d January 4, 2009 (11:46 pm)

Ok. Had a wee bit of a grammar glitch on my last post. My apologies…

  • Mary January 4, 2009 (11:47 pm)

32nd SW & Thistle (Westwood): We lost power briefly but it came back on as we got to our flashlights. It flickered a bunch in the couple of preceding hours and a few times after the power came back on. Still have Comcast, too, so all is good for now.

  • WSB January 4, 2009 (11:48 pm)

I have several such branches pix. Will add one to this post momentarily since we seem to be in an info-lull otherwise.

  • HMC Rich January 5, 2009 (12:04 am)

Power is on at 41st and Juneau area. Snow is heavy. Had to throw snowballs to knock snow off my Directv dish.

  • claffey January 5, 2009 (12:09 am)

Power and Comcast still on here in High Point (31st and Juneau). Haven’t had any flickers.

  • mellaw6565 January 5, 2009 (12:15 am)

Just drove back to Westwood/HP from Alaska Junction – took Cali all the way down to Thistle, Thistle to 35th, then to Trenton across Delridge. Piece of cake. It’s starting to warm up a little and roads are wet and slushy but even the biggest hill is easy to handle up or down.

Power outage from Holden to Barton and from 28th Ave west to Fauntleroy Hills. No traffic signals on that stretch of 35th from Holden to Barton – everything is actually pretty in the dark:)

  • pigeonmom January 5, 2009 (12:22 am)

Plow/sander went north on Fauntleroy @ ferry dock, stopped, turned around then went south back up towards Barton. First one I’ve seen all night. Power is on near dock.

  • Scott B. January 5, 2009 (12:43 am)

SE of Highland Park Elementary, power has been on continuously. I noticed an occasional flicker of the lights Sunday evening.

Unscientific observation: five or six inches of wet snow.

  • miws January 5, 2009 (12:50 am)

Plow just passed by southbound on California in the Thriftway block!

    .

    Mike

  • Pablo January 5, 2009 (12:53 am)

ambc- I’m on the 4700 block of Delridge. We’ve had power all night though there were a few flickers earlier. the road outside is wet pavement with some slushy snow in the middle and on the sides. Cars appear to be moving at normal speed.

  • ambc January 5, 2009 (1:48 am)

Pablo – thanks for the info.

Just got in from Lower Queen Anne. I drive a front wheel drive sedan, no chains. All main roads (99, WSB, Delridge) are bare, wet and passable. Just watch for big puddles…they are everywhere.

Henderson to 16th is slushy but passable. If it stays warm overnight, should be fine in the morning.

Hardest part of the whole thing was getting into the driveway. Some kind soul plowed a pathway down my street, but it ended up in my driveway. I got stuck on the packed, slushy snow. Anyone living on an unplowed hill, be very careful.

Power appeared to be on along Delridge with the exception of the light at Orchard by the AM/PM. That is still out.

  • Cami January 5, 2009 (2:54 am)

Tracy, The SNOWMARE continues… will you ever get a break? It’s raining at Alki now, but surprisingly, the SLUSH is hanging in there. With any luck, school won’t be canceled. If I missed telling you — HAPPY NEW YEAR! And I hope your power is back on SOON. :)

  • Scott B. January 5, 2009 (2:58 am)

SE of Highland Park Elementary, there is intermittent light drizzle and the snow is melting beginning on the big trees and powerlines.

  • Josh January 5, 2009 (6:30 am)

A blinding flash outside, and now the power line I mentioned in comment #3, at 16th & Kenyon, has snapped back into place. I never lost power for more than a moment, so I don’t know what that might mean for others.

  • miws January 5, 2009 (9:18 am)

Cool! We got the grader agian!

    .

From my perspective on the second floor, and several feet away from the window, all I caught was a glimpse of the lights, and heard the scraping sound, as it zipped by.

    .

    Mike

  • miws January 5, 2009 (9:19 am)

Well, that was supposed to be a blockquote of this:
“….the plow that Mike mentioned in comments, southbound on California from Morgan Junction, is the big yellow snow-clearing grader….”

    .

A picture is worth a thousand words…and the picture of TR’s computer in the dark next to a lantern says mounds about the dedication of the WSB editors! Thanks again for this valuable resource!

  • Steve Sherron January 5, 2009 (6:39 pm)

Sorry you are having all the bad weather. I was curious as to what your 2 wireless internet backups were. Hang in there.

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (6:59 pm)

Some months back, knowing we were committed to 24/7 coverage no matter what, we got a Verizon aircard. It’s also handy for being online anywhere, regardless of whether there’s wi-fi access – we have used it to post news instantly from courtrooms, neighborhood council meetings, breaking-news scenes, you name it.
But it’s not always practical to bring the laptop everywhere, so — after losing 15 precious minutes in posting a breaking-news story some months back because we were laptopless and had to rush back to HQ (usually one of us is here at all times and so if the other is out, they can phone in a story for the HQ person to post, if need be, but this was a rare exception) — we got an iPhone; the provider is AT&T. So those are our two backups right now. Still exploring yet more ways to ensure that we won’t be thrown offline in any but the most massive of disasters … might require getting yet another provider’s aircard so that we have triple backup. (And we saw a cool setup recently in which local hams rigged their own form of wireless internet transmission during an emergency-communications drill!)
People have said “if your area’s out of power, what’s the point in continuing to report online?” but they miss the fact that so many now have battery/wireless access, or – as we discovered in the December 2006 outages – they might even phone someone out of the area and ask them to check our site and relay any new info.

  • Johnston January 5, 2009 (7:52 pm)

Amusing tale from last night’s mini-blackout…My power went out at 10:48pm, called the SCL hotline to make sure they knew about it…they did, estimated power would be back on at 6:00am. OK, I was ready for bed anyway! This morning the power came back on…at 6:00 am! Exactly! One of my cynical co-workers said they probably had it fixed at 2:30am but waited to throw the switch until 6:00 because that’s when they said it would be fixed! I’m not that cynical, but I can attest to VERY accurate information from City Light during this most recent interruption!

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (8:03 pm)

FWIW, I am not sure if you’re in our exact zone but suspect it – I called around 1 am after listening to all the recordings on the SCL public line and NOT hearing “our” outage listed – when I finally got an operator, as I wrote above, they did NOT have this one on the list. Then as I wrote elsewhere, the SCL media rep who called me back just before 6 am didn’t have an ETA either. So when the power went back on at 6:07 am, I was rather surprised. Just in the nick of time, though, as co-publisher Patrick was putting on shoes to head out to find bags of ice to try to keep us from losing the fridge full o’food as happened in the 2006 multi-day outage …

  • Johnston January 5, 2009 (8:18 pm)

WSB: Pretty close…I’m in North Shorewood…I was that anonymous text you got saying I was in the dark. They did have my area on the recording, but the boundaries of the outage might have still been iffy since I called shortly after losing power and they had my area on the list. It was just a little funny because I got power back at…really…6:00am ON THE DOT! It sure is better than 2 years ago when the hotline said “It’s out all over and we’re working on it!”, but then this was only small pockets, not city-wide. Hope they’re really ready for the next big event!

  • fiz January 5, 2009 (8:36 pm)

    WSB: you guys are AMAZING!

Sorry, comment time is over.
