Update: Cat rescued from fire at animal advocate’s home

(SCROLL DOWN for updates including fire’s cause and how to help)

(Added: Firefighter Jeff Blevins with rescued cat; photo by WSB’s Patrick Sand)
10:41 AM: Fire units have responded to a house in the 3800 block of 46th SW – a few blocks west of California/Charlestown. First crews on scene are describing it on the scanner as a “room fire.” We’re on the way.

(Subsequent photos by Christopher Boffoli for WSB)
10:48 AM: No report of injuries so far. Via scanner, crews say they have “knocked down” the fire, but it has “extended” – spread – into a wall, so they’re tackling that. We’ve just added a photo from our first photojournalist at the scene, Christopher Boffoli.

11:05 AM: A cat has been rescued from the house and is reported to be getting medical attention. Firefighters at the scene confirm the fire was largely confined to one room, on the second floor, but there was a lot of smoke in the rest of the house.

11:20 AM: Photo added, firefighter tending to the rescued cat. We have to disclose that we notified the homeowner, local animal advocate Teri Ensley, after recognizing the house, the scene of many fundraising plant sales she has held for Furry Faces Foundation. She is there now.

11:48 AM: We’re told the cat has been taken to a veterinarian. No word on the fire’s cause – the investigation unit, Marshal 5, was sent there, and we’re likely to have information later.

2:11 PM: We just went over to check with Teri. The rescued cat’s name is Jared, by the way. She’s found another cat who’s going to the vet to be checked out. Her house won’t be inhabitable for a while; she’s making arrangements for a place to stay and has found somewhere for the cats. We’re awaiting SFD’s official word on cause; the last fire crew was just leaving as co-publisher Patrick pulled up to follow up.

2:43 PM: The Fire Department’s account of events is up on their website. According to the update, “A Seattle Fire Investigator determined the fire was accidental. A hot plate that was left on ignited combustibles on the kitchen counter. The damage estimate is 60 thousand dollars to the structure and 10 thousand dollars to the contents.” SFD also says one 16-year-old cat didn’t make it. The update also notes that what you saw on Jared in our photo is a “specially designed pet oxygen mask” – here’s another view:

Meantime, commenters have provided info on how to help Teri and the cats; donations are being accepted at Beveridge Place Pub.

ADDED TUESDAY: Here’s a followup story with a list of what’s needed by Teri, the animals, and Furry Faces, for all those who’ve generously offered to help.

I live right around the corner. OUr house is filled w/ smoke, but I am grateful it is not the one on fire. My heart goes out to the owners of that home. I hope their cats are OK. No one was home.

  • Sara January 9, 2012 (12:49 pm)

    Hey Everyone,

Teri is the sweetest most giving person I know. Who has spent her life giving back to others and caring for animals big and small. She has lost a great deal to this fire. If there is anything you can donate, for her or for any of her personal and foster cats effected by this fire would be greatly appricated. She is currently in need of cat food, litter or kitty condos.

Thanks for everyone who has helped and will help in getting Teri and her cats back on their feet.

    Sara

  • Erin-AARF January 9, 2012 (2:13 pm)

I just spoke with Gary at the Beveridge Place Pub and they are gracious enough to be accepting donations for Teri Ensley. Their address is 6413 California Ave SW, West Seattle 98136.

Sara…does she need any cat carriers?

    • WSB January 9, 2012 (2:22 pm)

Thanks, Sara and Erin. Patrick just went back over to check with Teri but those are specifics we don’t have – I will add to the main text of the story. – TR

  • Sara- AARF January 9, 2012 (2:43 pm)

    Deb,

Any thing will help! They where not specifically asked for but all of Furry Faces Foundations donations were Lost in the fire. I left work early and am shopping for her basic personal needs, if you have anything to donate either drop it off at beveridge pub place, or please email me at

  • Kat Missing Pet Partnership January 9, 2012 (3:08 pm)

Teri is a great friend to Missing Pet Partnership. We will get the word out to our volunteer network that donations to Furry Faces are needed. We could even help by participating in a fundraiser if one is ultimately organized. Please keep us posted (253-529-3999…thank you to the West Seattler who called us to alert us in the first place!)

  • miws January 9, 2012 (3:13 pm)

Thanks to everyone that is/will be helping Teri out. She’s a class act, and wonderful supportive friend.

    .

When she’s not working full time, she’s dedicating herself to running her all volunteer organization Furry Faces Foundation, and helping out pet owners in need. That also includes devoting a lot of time to organizing and working fundraisers for F3.

    .

One would never wish this situation on anyone else, and thankfully, it wasn’t much worse. However, it’s especially heartbreaking to have it happen to such a wonderful, caring, giving person that has devoted 35 years of her life to being a pet advocate.

    .

Unfortunately, about all I can offer Teri right now is moral support and virtual {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}.

    .

    Mike

  • Brian January 9, 2012 (3:20 pm)

Teri is a friend and a wonderful advocate for both people and animals. Definitely thinking of her and willing to help in any way possible.

  • Raechelle January 9, 2012 (3:28 pm)

If there is a specific brand of cat food, please post here in the comments. I’m happy to pick up some and donate. I know any kind of food would probably be appreciated, but I’d rather get exactly what is preferred.

    Thanks

  • westseattledood January 9, 2012 (3:33 pm)

Pet Pros (Westwood) Manager Yvette is putting a sign up and/or letting employees know to send customers with donations to BPP.

I didn’t know which precise items are most needed, but I told them everything feline related, gently or partially used or new? A List would be helpful I think.

  • Muttleys January 9, 2012 (3:36 pm)

We would be happy to collect items on this end of West Seattle if needed.

    Let me know

  • Lien Animal Clinic January 9, 2012 (3:48 pm)

Teri is a valued member of the veterinary community and a friend of LAC. We’ll also direct our clients to deliver any donations for Teri to Beveridge Place Pub. Please contact us if we can help her and her furry little ones in any way (206-932-1133).

  • Christopher Boffoli January 9, 2012 (3:50 pm)

Just dropped off to Beveridge Place: two 40lb bags of litter, two big bags of IAMS, two new cat crates, a few packets of kitty treats and a small bottle of bourbon. Best to you Teri!

  • steph January 9, 2012 (4:02 pm)

I work at Pet Elements in West Seattle, and have been lucky enough to become friends with Teri through store donation collection and drinks together at the Beveridge. She is a great person, who gives nearly everything to animals.
I spoke with some of the volunteers at Kitty Harbor this afternoon, and it sounds like besides putting on an adoption event for cats this weekend, they will also be collecting donations to help with the insurance deductible for Terri’s home. My guess is Gary and Terri at Beveridge Place would accept donations for this as well. Teri is the kind of person that would NEVER ask for help for herself, and always gives to others. In many ways her home is a shelter for animals, so it would go toward the animals.
This is a horrible thing to happen to such an awesome and caring person who is all about the animals.

  • Sara- AARF January 9, 2012 (4:24 pm)

    Hey everyone,

Thank you for such kind words for our dear friend Teri. I will try to work on a list of things that will be needed.

Kelly, it would be great if you could collect donations. I can come by when needed to deliver them to Teri.

If there are any other local business that would like to collect donations, please let me know, I would be more than happy to come and pick them up.

As noted above, you can also donate Muttley Crew Cuts on Admiral next to Metrolpolitan Market.

    • WSB January 9, 2012 (4:26 pm)

We’ll publish a separate update when there is a consensus on list of what’s needed, where to take them, etc. Thank you all for the updates – TR

  • lena January 9, 2012 (4:37 pm)

I’m so sorry Teri. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help or if your kitties need anything I can provide. Are their specific supplies that are needed? Kelly if Muttley’s becomes a drop off location as well, let me know and I will send folks up your way.

OMG… We are so sorry to hear about this. Teri is such an incredibly warm and giving force in this community with Furry Faces. Let us know how we can help (206-935-4546). Meanwhile we’ll send customers across the street to The Beveridge Place to donate.

Teri, our hearts and minds are with you.

Karma has fallen asleep on the job again it seems, but caring people in our community have not. So sorry this has happened to such a compassionate person and that one of the cats didn’t make it.

  • Emmyjane January 9, 2012 (7:03 pm)

Oh Teri I’m so sorry! We are awaiting word of what is specifically needed. Also we have room for storage here (milo’s old room). Thinking of you…

    I love this community.

  • munchkin22 January 9, 2012 (7:45 pm)

We’re betting we can get some grateful residents of NV to help with any anticipated cleanup of the damage at your place. We’re so sorry about the loss of your beloved cat and the roof over your head. We can’t imagine the depth of your sorrow at this point but please know our prayers are with you and we’ll do our best to be there when you need us. You have a huge community out there that is standing with you in this. Know that you are loved.

  • KD January 9, 2012 (7:52 pm)

PEOPLE!!! When things get organized & announced, let’s step up, and make this as easy for Teri as we can & give generously. Not only to help transition back to normalcy after a jarring event, but what a way to show appreciation for all the hard work of FurryFaces making life easier for dogs & cats & therefore enhancing the adopting humans lives. THANKYOU to all the people in the comments section that are lining up to help. Animal rescue work is already financially & emotionally draining without a house fire. Let’s show Teri a big thanks. ^ ^. o

Teri is one of the most amazing women I know – truly selfless. Arriving outside her home today, realizing she’d lost her kitty in the fire and seeing the condition her home was in was absolutely heartbreaking. All she could focus on was the animals she was fostering inside and making sure they were ok.

She gives so much to the animals and the people in our community, I hope we can all come together to lift her up during this difficult time. Please post to your friends and invite them to participate.

Hugs to you Teri. Our world is a better place with you in it.

  • Alice January 9, 2012 (8:12 pm)

Thinking of you Teri in this difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember your kindness to me when I and my kitties were in need. Now I am honored to reciprocate. Beveridge Place for donations but I will keep checking as to what else is needed. You have given so freely, thank you.

  • Steve F January 9, 2012 (8:28 pm)

I’ll be making a donation on my day off on Wed, and looking forward to helping when plans get dialed.

    Hi Everyone,

You all are truly amazing. I have just sent WSB a list of things Teri said she needed. So stay tuned for when that is posted. I also wanted everyone to know that Teri is beside her self with the out pouring of support you all have shown. After her neighbors filled her belly with amazing food they gave her a print out of this article and all of the comments and told her she was loved. Teri is reading all of your comments, and in the morning will be reading all of the emails everyone has sent in. Just watching her realize the support she has in each and everyone of you, I know this is helping her. She had a smile on her face more than tears in her eyes tonight, she just kept saying, “all of these people are reaching out to help me, thats amazing.” I just wanted everyone to know that Teri really appricates everything you are all doing for her.

  • Karen January 10, 2012 (7:34 am)

    Terii- glad you are safe

  • miws January 10, 2012 (8:26 am)

    Thanks for the update, Sara.

    .

All of us that know Teri, and that have been the recipients of F3’s, and Teri’s personal generosity, know that she often goes above and beyond the call of duty, and does so in a very humble manner.

    .

It’s very heartwarming, but not surprising, to see this outpouring of help and love during this unfortunate time for her.

    .

    Mike

Teri – I just wanted to let you know how much my heart goes out to you during this traumatic time. Having been through a fire myself, I know how devastating it can be. Sadly, I’ve not been in touch with you for awhile due to health issues and life just getting in the way (my bad), but you are always in my thoughts, especially now. You touch so many lives (both two-legged and four-legged), you make this world so much a better place for all of us with your selfless acts and caring. I tried to email Sara to pass on my cell phone — not sure if I still have your latest number. Just know that I am here for you in whatever I can do. Physical ailments prevent me from helping in that way, but I’ll be there with gift cards, donations, whatever you and FFF need. Give me a call if you need a shoulder. Big hugs to you my dearest… we love you. Jennifer M. (Former FFF Float Flamingo Queen) p.s. another friend, Terri C. went through a house fire about a year and a half ago. If you need some recommendations re the insurance maze, she might be able to give some advice.

  • Rose De Dan January 10, 2012 (11:49 am)

Teri, I just heard, so very sorry for your losses. Sending positive energy for all involved, although it sounds like the wonderful West Seattle community is already sending a lot of that your way!

I will send a shout out to my spiritual community of animal lovers, and ask for their assistance as well. If you need energy healing for yourself or any of the cats who may have trauma I am happy to be of assistance, no charge.

And I, too, am grateful to live in such a wonderful community. Thanks to everyone who cares, and most especially to WSB and the firefighters.
