AlkiRagdollParticipantI was talking to an older neighbor (55, so its older than me), who asked me if I know someone who would help her get in shape. She has had several medical conditions that have prevented her from getting any exercise in the last 3 years. Her Dr has given her clearance to exercise, but no assistance in where she can turn to help do it slow. He would not giver her a perscription for physical therapy, as I asked. Is there anyone in WS that is not associated with either AllStar or 24-Hr Fitness (she wont go there, as I have tried to get her to come with me) that does this type of thing? She is pretty over weight.

yikesMemberI would highly recommend the YMCA on 36th Ave SW. They have a seniors group and there is one on one coaching. Also, I find the Y to be a totally welcoming place no matter your shape or experience.

BonnieParticipantI agree with yikes. the Y would be a great place to go. Either the one on 36th or the Fauntleroy one at Fauntleroy Church.

AlkiRagdollParticipantThanks for the Y suggestions, as I will pose them to her. But i get the feel that she is seeking one-on-one help and not a class/audience.

DBurnsParticipantMy husband has been a personal trainer for almost 10 years in WS and trains many people with special circumstances. He trains privately at our home gym or yours. You can contact him at 206-919-8076 or queandd@aol.com
PS is 55 really considered a senior? Really? Oh dear…

WSBKeymasterThere are also a couple one-on-one bodywork practitioner/trainers on the WSB sponsor team.

ErikParticipantFT Fitness is also 1 on 1 training, and a WSB sponsor. Above Jak’s, down the hall from 8limbs yoga.

celeste17ParticipantShe could try curves. It is designed for woman and all ages and activity levels. They do have some one on one counseling and will help you when you get started and along the way.

charlabobParticipantThe Y also sells day (and week?) passes so she (and I) can try it out and see if we’ll actually participate without committing to a year contract. If she’s interested, contact me — sounds like we’re at the same fitness level and might be able to do something together to encourage each other. (charla at charla dot com)

JanSParticipantDBurns…..I am 62, have had my share of physical ills ( a 5 yr breast cancer survivor as of TODAY – yay, 2 hip replacements, etc.). And I have to stop and remind myself that I’m now considered “senior” – esp. to take advantage of some discounts. But 55? no way – it’s only a number, and it’s all in how you look at it :)

DBurnsParticipant:) You know, I say, “Bring it On” – but I was just wondering…

thomasMemberI am a personal trainer and a massage therapist who specializes in people with special health issues. I work both in a gym and in you home if you need. I would be happy to meet with you and dicuss your situation. My name is Thomas Alexander and my number is 206-940-0451 and my email is mitaqueasin@hotmail.com

lindaParticipantI’d like to add my personal recommendation for Thomas. I worked with him when my exercise routine had been completely derailed by a long term illness. He helped me to ease back into an exercise routine that allowed me to explore my new limitations without exceeding them. He is very knowledgeable and understanding and I truly enjoyed our sessions. I would still be working with him if financial issues had not come up.
Full disclosure: I emailed Thomas the link to the post becuase I didn’t want to post a useless recommendation: I wasn’t sure if Thomas was still working as a personal trainer.

ws4everMemberDefinitely would suggest having a personal trainer for a safe return to fitness. I have been way underwhelmed with fitness staff at Fauntleroy and Curves–unavailable at Fauntleroy, and kids talking on phones at Curves. Good technique and not exceeding limitations are so important to avoid injury as you’re starting back to health.
January 14, 2010 at 11:02 pm #686268
SueParticipantI would also advise to make sure a personal trainer is actually certified, and not just someone who “knows a lot about fitness.” While I’ve never been to Curves, I went to a similar type of place in NYC for a while, and the “trainer” was someone who knew less about fitness than I did.

DavidFParticipantThomas is awesome. I have worked with him for a few years, and he is by far the best trainer I have ever worked with,

librarianMemberAlikRagdoll,
I don’t know if you are still looking, but I enthusiatically recommend Jackie at Fusion Studio. I am 65 with a bad knee and have had the privilege of working with her for over 3 years. She is highly qualified, and always taking new classes. As well a personal training, she is a yoga instructor. During workouts and yoga, she always is aware and respectful of my body’s needs and makes modifications where necessary.
Good luck you your neighbor.
