“I have worked with investors for 60 years and I have yet to see anyone — not even when capital gains rates were 39.9 percent in 1976-77 — shy away from a sensible investment because of the tax rate on the potential gain. People invest to make money, and potential taxes have never scared them off. And to those who argue that higher rates hurt job creation, I would note that a net of nearly 40 million jobs were added between 1980 and 2000. You know what’s happened since then: lower tax rates and far lower job creation. “

Still waiting for someone to show me some hard evidence either way:

—Do wealthy people create more jobs and prosperity?

    . . . or . . .

—Does government taxing and spending create more jobs and prosperity?

    Of course liberals will say:

Wealthy people have been around for a while, yet we still have depressions and recessions.

    . . . and conservatives will say:

Government just keeps getting bigger, yet we still have depressions and recessions.

As far as I’m concerned, those two bits of anecdotal evidence cancel each other out. So I’m back to looking for hard evidence of just what creates more jobs and prosperity: wealthy folks or government spending?

    I love WArren.

On the other hand, has anyone read about our wonderful congressman from CA (San Diego), Darrel Issa? Article in today’s NYT:

read the whole article, and look to see if steam is coming out of your ears :D

    Why yes……yes it is.

He has secured millions of dollars in Congressional earmarks for road work and public works projects that promise improved traffic and other benefits to the many commercial properties he owns here north of San Diego.

But……but……I thought republicans were against earmarks.

Apparently Mr. Issack (pronounced EYE-suk) isn’t

everyone here jumps on Patty Murray for her earmarks…down there the city councilman says” That’s their job, to bring home a piece of the pie to the place they represent” They’re against gov’t. spending until it benefits them… you can’t win…

What have I been saying? Get rid of the loopholes. Then the “rich” will pay the share they should.

Just because you are a Republican doesn’t mean we are against all spending as some of you would like to paint us.

Republicans generally spend less than Democrats but they have spent. Notice the debt that has grown. Now it is time to reign in improper spending. Stop as much waste as possible, and get the country more productive.

The more stories on big spenders and hypocritical statements is better for all of us. That way I can elect the more fiscally responsible individual in the future.

At least Patty usually doesn’t preach fiscal responsibility. She just knows how to get more pork. And that is why some of you vote for her.

That is nothing to be ashamed of. But I will never vote for her.

what’sa matter, kootch? did that mean old syndicalist bolshevik, warren buffet, poop in your corn flakes?

now, rich, i’ll ask you the same thing i asked kootch in another thread:

what spending are you against? be specific. all i hear from you guys is vague platitudes about how the government is too big.

kootch is ready to cut all federal employees’ wages, benefits, and pensions, as well as their collective bargaining rights.

sounds severe. but it won’t cut $1.1 trillion from a $3.5 trillion budget.

at least you acknowledge that tax loopholes need to be closed. it’s a start. but i really want to know what you would cut.

    #732207

When we all dial down our personal protest slogans it is simply a fact that we need more revenues to operate our country.

Sure, cuts can certainly be made in a number of places but lets not cut the basics/safety nets from those that need it the most.

Lets not become the countries and leaders we have hated the most-

I for one want the fire department to show up when I call, likewise for the police etc. I want the roads maintained, bridges secured, investments in our future through green technology, expansion of rail, college tuitions, basic health care for all, affordable housing for those needing help- a military that can react to a crisis if required, a auto industry that is vibrant, hope in our people mixed with the pride that we Americans actually attempted to build that place we so often call, “the greatest country in the world.”

Those outside looking at us know we are not-why not try to become such, rather than becoming this angry, overweight, jealous old digger who is unable to see reality and throws baby punches at the weakest claiming a corner on strength—

    “Hey, I cudda been champ!”

We are becoming pathetic in our unique self centered fashion. We may pass from history leaving behind only tattered dollar bills fluttering on the broken egos of many-

Warren Buffett is so filfthy rich that even if you have exactly $1 billion dollars yourself, you’d oppose it.

nope… if he paid the taxes he was obliged to do…by law, and he thinks he should pay more. Write the check. I love the moral compass…it seems to always point to someone else. Doesn’t bother me a whit.

    #732212

MIWS-it is simple once we define what we really want-

Check out Charlie Rose and Buffett conversation from the Charlie Rose program last night….

I don’t think its about who spends more etc. It’s getting what we want as a people.

Having spent years and years living elsewhere I can assure you there are countries loaded with people who are happy to be where they are-now.

Those in desperate straights are looking for a leg up, comfort and opportunity.

Many do not want to offer that anymore to anyone from outside unless they look and believe exactly like the gate-keeper. That is a horrible way to re-define a country that was open to the experiment of immigration from all over the world.

Do we want to be some dwindling tin horn state bristling with military gear that brings us nothing-

    Perhaps-

    —Well said, Rich.

Do people really think one party has the corner on hypocrisy and greed while the other has the corner on caring and enlightment? That’s pretty naive.

Both parties have good people in them; the basic difference lies only in philosophy. I would like to see both parties talking more about their own philosophy and less about how evil the other guys are. And I’m still waiting for someone to demonstrate scientifically why one philosophy of economics (liberal or conservative) is better than the other . . .

“Republicans generally spend less than Democrats “

just spit my drink out… is this statement a joke????

spending has grown 64% faster when a Republican sits in the White House than when a Democrat does.

Debt increase by presidents: Reagan 186%, Bush 54% Clinton 41% Bush II 72% Obama 23%

71% of national debt happened during GOP presidencies; 28% under Dem presidents

wow. finally an admission of truth from a conservative.

“oh! these bums are disgusting and crime downtown is horrible! someone should do something!”

    or

“the city should pave the arterial that runs by my house! (but not the other ones.) the potholes are appalling!”

    followed immediately by

“don’t take my tax money and give it to some bum!”

    and

“VOTE NOES!!1!!1! ON ANY TAX INCREASES!!!1!”

yep. it’s always someone else’s problem.

    jamminj…

i had a similar response to DPs request for hard evidence ;->

taxes for corporations are at historic lows and unemployment at historic highs…

    and we need evidence?

perhaps we should look to the minor matter of revenue for evidence?

not only has job creation faltered…

    living wage jobs have faltered.

The unemployment rate for graduating college students is at an all time high in the United States..

and most of those who are employed are underemployed:(

We have scientists paying those student loans off via employment at starbucks..

or if they are lucky.. REI. REI employs a lot of underemployed scientists..

but hey.. lets wait for even the neo-conservatives to bend to the wisdom of stats…

tho it might be a long wait for those conclusive stats

they can’t even acknowledge global warming
