Hi Jim, Apologies in advance, this is TMI.
About 8.5 years ago I was laid off and part of my separation package was 6 weeks of career counseling/resume writing with Waldron (they’re downtown). I’m administrative support so my resume until that time was a list of responsibilities at each job as I had no idea how to otherwise quantify my value. At my first meeting I was given a workbook and weekly written assignments to bring in and discuss (I think it’s what going to therapy must be like). It was an intense six weeks of introspection and essay writing – describing every responsibility I had at each job and explaining how I was successful/why I was the right person to do that task. Yikes! Those essays I wrote ended up as the basis for my new resume. The counselor red-lined all the extraneous info and turned them into bullet points.
I ended up with a resume that one employer said was the only accomplishment-based one she’d ever seen for an administrative support person and was very impressed. Although I didn’t get that job she did contact me later for another position but I was already employed by then. What an ego-boost. I don’t know if Waldron still does the same type of work, and am guessing it was pricy but, if you’re looking to rewrite your resume it might be worthwhile to investigate. I learned an entirely new way to sell my abilities.
