curiouslyinquisitiveMemberI live and work on the other side of the pond. To be clear I am not a WS resident by day nor night. However, I have, and do, and shall continue to set foot onto the shores of New York Alki proper and there abouts for the forseeable future and then some. To say the least, I like West Seattle. My job in the past required frequent visits to WS and now it is WS that draws me there. Reading the WS blog has been refreshing and at times plagues me w/ spontaneous moments of cranial combustion(this is a good thing!). I don’t want to mislead anyone about where I currently live. Just wanted to put that out there. Call it an inexplicable urge to expose myself.

redblackParticipantwhich “pond?” elliott bay, puget sound, or the pacific ocean?
December 28, 2010 at 5:42 pm #712345
curiouslyinquisitiveMemberYeah Redblack. you’re right. I wasnt clear on which pond. It’s a hop over Elliot Bay, then a drive North through a bramble of buildings and cars… North Seattle. Just a hop skip and jump from another pond – Green Lake. Not too exciting I am afraid.

JoBParticipantperhaps you have a West Seattle state of mind?
December 28, 2010 at 5:48 pm #712347
redblackParticipantit is a world wide web, after all. you could be in port orchard for all we knew.
or japan. :)
but please, feel free to come over, spend money, and be polite whenever the fant’sy strikes you.

curiouslyinquisitiveMemberThanks. WS is nice and so are the folks. Atleast the ones that I have met and the ones I call my friends. The atmosphere is unique and geniune. I’m not one to over sell something, unless we are talking about something serious like amazing donuts or hot crispy bacon and don’t get me started on pumpkin pie… where was i? oh yeah. I am easily distracted by a donut, piece of bacon, slice of pumpkin pie, and/or a pint of IPA. You do have a little bit of paradise as Cities/ suburbs go. A little of everything, but not too much. Well I started this rant to make myself not feel too guilty, as a non-resident of WS. Thank you RedBlack and Job for your kind words…
I suppose this RANT could go another way, in that it could be a spring board for last chance 2010 confessions – before 2011???
I’ll go first:
1. I ate way too many donuts that I did not like.
2. I should know better which brand of bacon not to buy, but I am weak when it comes to bacon, always wanting to give the ‘sale’ brand a chance.
3. Costco Pumpkin pie is a really really good deal. Okay. maybe that’s not a confession, rather an admission. Otherwise I like the libby’s pumpkin pie recipe on the can – the non-pumpkin spice version.

redblackParticipantregarding doughnuts, there is a top pot between you and west seattle.
no one should suffer the indignities of inferior bacon. i’ll bet that swinery has some good bacon. husky deli, too.
you gotta pay to play, i guess. same thing with scotch, wine, and ale.
save the cost-cutting for toilet paper and dish soap. (both of which you’ll need in order to subsist on doughnuts, bacon, and IPA.)

JanSParticipantconfessions? you said “scotch”…I will confess that I didn’t drink enough of the good stuff :)
December 28, 2010 at 8:09 pm #712351
JanSParticipantand I only drink the good stuff :)

curiouslyinquisitiveMemberRedblack thanks for the TopPot recommendation. I have and will continue to eat some top pot donuts, but that stuff has a taste that is just too healthy for me. I love fried crispy crunchy foods. I have been a patriot of Winchell’s for quite sometime, starting when I was a kid, and try as I might to just walk away I kept coming back… but now there is no Winchell’s franchise in the state of washington. The closest one is at 640 E Laurel Dr.,Salinas, Ca 93906 (761 miles south according to their web store locator app)!!! ;(. I am not a fan of the other chains.
Note to self – MUST Get Bacon – Swinery – 3207 California Ave Sw… got it.
RedBlack. i’ll have you know that I do subsist on more than just doughnuts, bacon, and IPA… you forgot to mention pumpkin Pie! :)

DaveBParticipantA slight thread hijack…
It’s a long was from W Seattle (and not quite as far from N Seattle) but the best doughnuts I’ve had are at Frost in Mill Creek (http://www.frostology.com/). Top Pot is mighty good but Frost is better. If they had a spot in WS I’d weigh twice what I do now.

JanSParticipantFrost has the best maplebars w/bacon…what a great donut shop!
December 30, 2010 at 1:04 am #712360
sam-cParticipant(not to thread-jill even more..)
maple bars- that is all I could think of this morning when I was trying to tell my husband about the recent ski lift accident. ..
skiiing at maple-bar….
no, not maple bar, sugar loaf !
that’s similar, right? a maple bar is a loaf of sugar….. I hadn’t had my coffee yet (or doughnut)

angelescrestParticipantmore thread-jacking…
Has anyone had the cranberry-apple pies made by Whidbey Island Pies sold at the Met? Everything about that pie is superlative.
