Anyone who drives the eastbound onramp from Admiral/Avalon to West Seatle Bridge will see the turkeys who go into the BUS-only lane during rush hour with their right turn signal on as if that makes it OK (And of course their time is more important than everyone else’s who is waiting in the backup). Would love to see the enforcement of this, but it is a catch-22 – if a cop is in the area that very fact will make a traffic jam even worse.

I have seen traffic cops sitting and waiting… and nabbing violators as you described. It makes my day! Scofflaws!

Sometimes you’ll see some “self-enforcement” and a vehicle will go halfway the bus lane to annoy the scofflaws too. I’m often “HOV-4” (2 adults and 2 kids on way to daycare) so I often wish the bus-only lane would allow HOV-3… :-)

The real problem are the people that drive in the bus lane further up, sneaking in at the last minute to get on 99 N. I sometimes let these people in in front of me, only to be pissed that they can’t even give a ‘thank you wave’. When that happens, they get the ‘thank you finger’ from me. It’s not too difficult to give a wave, and it’s just one of those simple gestures that has a huge impact.

If a person does not know about the precision timing and lanes to be in, getting to the 99 exit can be tricky and impossible. Not everyone drives during the rush hour, and are not aware of the rules. I often forget about it because my regular commute is at 5 am and I get the whole road to myself. MY perspective is that YOU guys are being jerks because I have to get over and you simply will not let me. It is a horrible design, yet you would rather I miss my exit because I did not, could not get over. It take practice. Just let us in! We are not cheating, we are just trying to get to work just like you.

M, Thank you for bringing up the importance of the “thank you wave”! My family makes fun of me for doing it, yet I too think it is a very simple AND very important acknowledgment of road kindness.

AB, it only takes two trips on a road at rush hour to learn the pattern of traffic. The use of the word “often” in your sentence, “I often forget about it because my regular commute is at 5 am and I get the whole road to myself.” tells me that you aren’t used to driving with others on the road. Sounds like it’s time to learn to put the rush hour traffic pattern to memory so that those of us who are in the lanes we need, to get to work, don’t have to slow down and interfere with the flow of traffic JUST to let you in. (said with a Thank you wave!)

GN, Hear me out here I do come from Alki, which is difficult because the traffic is backed all the way up the bridge and OFTEN at this time near impossible to get over. I am not asking you to slow down??? You are virtually stopped. I have to get over there in the lane I need and the only way is to go across the bus lane and then look at a wall of cars staring blankly. “AB, it only takes two trips on a road at rush hour to learn the pattern of traffic” Seriously, I encounter WSB rush hour 4-5 times a year, and it is a whole other beast, how this tells you that I am not used to driving with others on the road is strange. Please tell me the right way to get over when OFTEN NO ONE will let me in. The pattern would require me to go up to the top of the W. Seattle bridge and come down in the right lane. The traffic design is flawed. You are actually inviting me to add another car to your morning commute . Brilliant. I am OFTEN in traffic the rest of the day. I feel lucky to avoid the Hell that becomes the bridge. You possess the exact attitude I was afraid of when I am stuck in a bind trying to get over beacause of the design or lack of. I made a freaking mistake and you will not have it. I wave, I blow kisses, I stick my hands out the roof and I throw rose petals and starbucks gift cards to the kind soul who let me in without judging me. The sense of entitlement people get because they happen to be in a lane they is so ridiculous. Sounds to me like I said I needed practice and was just offering another perspective to us turkeys. Good Day.

On the very rare occasions that I am driving downtown during morning rush hour, instead of taking Fauntleroy up to the bridge I turn onto Avalon, make a right onto Genessee, a left onto Delridge, and voila, you are in the correct lane for 99 once you get on the bridge. This saves me lots of grief in trying to get over when nobody will let you, or blocking buses. Even if this takes me longer, it’s much less stressful.

I just emailed him with this same argument that this bus lane should be carpool but if you have any suggestions for it, please email: Reiner Blanco with the Seattle dept of Transportation Arterial Street Operations Supervisor. sdotcrm@crm.seattle.gov

Everyone emailing him with these concerns is one of the only ways to take action on this “bus lane” that, by the way, is one of the few if not the only 100% full time bus lane within the county other than directly down town by the stadiums. All other places are a bus/carpool lane.

    Email away! sdotcrm@crm.seattle.gov

ha ha AB you crack me up! ill let you in if you throw rose petals and starbucks cards out the window!!! i take my daughter to school around 9 have you noticed the bride is seeming less crowded these days (knock on wood) i come from the top of the bridge and the law seems to be that as long as you cut in before the solid lines start which is like mid bridge its ok…i know im going to get grief for that…i hate angry people!

OK all, I admit the WS bridge is flawed and Charlie Chong was the only one on the City council who seemed to understand the problems. I will be e-mailing the SDOT as I do agree the bus lane is more of a hindrance than a help. I am usually one of the drivers who lets ONE car in at each bottleneck area, but do expect an acknowledgment by way of a “thank you wave.” This was my first attempt at “snarky” and apparently I have a lot to learn ;) Sorry AB if I was too harsh! Thank you Sue for the alternative route!

Here’s my “Getting on 99” road rules:

No driving your car in the bus lane deliberately.

No stopping in the bus lane to join the 99 backup line.

    No 90 degree turns.

    No honking.

    No fingers.

    No grudges.

Better yet, just take the bus.
