charlabobParticipantMany years ago we had the PTA — then, we decided to add students. Now I think it’s time to add “other” (community?) to the title and to the group. As school funding becomes more and more tenuous, we need to make clear that schools are vital to the community — not just to P’s, T’s, and S’s.
I have many debates with other folks, like the charla and the bob, who don’t fall into any of those categories and, therefore, tend to vote no on bond issues, etc. I think this would be a good way, both symbolic and real, to make sure everyone feels included.

luckymom30ParticipantAs far as I know everyone from the community is welcome at the PTSA meetings, whether you are a member or not. Maybe if the communities were so spilt and we all worked toegther all schools would have the same opportunities. I am all for neighborhoods supporting the schools in any way the can. It would also be great if people who don’t have kids helped with fundraisers and helped by being a crossing guard or volunteer at the school, all schools need volunteers. A background check and a good positive attitude is all that is needed.

pamMemberIndeed – community support is always encouraged. An hour a month is a big help!

addParticipantIf you are especially interested in the legislative side of education & schools, the Seattle Council PTSA has a very active committee on advocacy & legislative issues: http://www.seattlecouncilptsa.org/cat_index_42.shtml
If your interests are more local, by all means contact your neighborhood school PTSA and find out how you can be involved!
