JayDeeParticipantHas anyone in WSB land taken photography classes with Joanne? Can you recommend these classes?
I have a new camera (Canon G11) that is smarter than me when it comes to taking pictures and feel I am missing alot when I just default to “Auto” — Kinda like driving a Ferrari only to the 7/11. If anyone can provide feedback, that would be great.

JustSarahParticipantI’m also wondering if these classes are geared more toward point-and-shoot or DSLR owners. I am a new owner of a very nice DSLR and these courses would be a great deal if working with those cameras is covered, as well!

lazybeardParticipantI emailed the contact earlier this morning as I’m curious about the intermediate course. I’ll let anyone know what she says.

a ferrari is only a car
a beautiful car
that can respond very quickly
and go very fast
but it will also take you to the grocery store..
your camera is much the same
it will take time to learn to utilize all it’s features
but in the meantime you can still take pictures..

lazybeardParticipantI got a response back from Joanne Murray, the instructor for the courses. Here is the email…
<quote>Thank you for your inquiry about the digital photo workshops:
If you know how to access your menu’s and change your settings ( wb, iso, ev ) you should take the second intermediate cruise workshop.
Each workshop/lunch/cruise is $75. if you pre-register for one it would be $75., two would be $150., or all three $225.
We will also have an additional Intermediate to Advance workshop on Feb. 6th for those who want to learn even more, like how to reverse your lens for macros, use extreme settings and create images for wide angle panoramas, portraiture, etc.
I hope you will be able to attend and please pass the info. on to other associates, friends and relatives who have digital cameras.
You will learn more in one workshop than you would in a year of trial and error on your own.
Be sure you bring your camera manual so you can mark the refernces for future use.
The size of the vessel will be determined by the number in each workshop.

JayDeeParticipantI rec’d the same reply as lazybeard. I know what wb and iso are (although when I grew up it was ASA), and will figure out what ev is (exposure value?).
It sounds like a pretty good deal at $75/class plus lunch. It would be nice to have others with similar questions in the same class (up to a certain size).
Thanks to Clark5080 for your offer–I may try the class and see what I can get from it.
And to cjboffoli and JoB — I know I’ve bitten off more than I can handle, but I was attracted to the new features like image stabilization. It seems the new digital cameras are a lot like the self-checkout lanes at the QFC–you gotta work a lot taking the picture, and then you have to do the processing, and the “printing”- hard copy or print.

While I like the control, the amount of labor involved is higher than in the old film days (though the price/exposure is negligible compared to film).
