JiggersMemberI am in downtown and see that Westlake Park is emty. Only police paddy wagons and horses. Corporate companies rule baby! Either join them or suffer! The revolution is dead. Time to move on and join Amazon.
October 23, 2011 at 6:58 pm #738110
DBPMemberYou tried to save us, Jiggers. Perhaps the world just wasn’t ready for your message.
(Kidding. KIDDING!!!)
Dude, I beg to differ . . .
The Revolution is NOT over.
October 23, 2011 at 8:17 pm #738111
JiggersMemberThey won’t be back. They are all in jail doing thirty days for disorderly conduct right now and some csn’t even bail out.
October 23, 2011 at 9:25 pm #738112
JanSParticipantjiggers…the movement is still out there. Perhaps a few have been arrested, but..don’t count them out just yet. You sound almost gleeful that people have been arrested…geez!
October 23, 2011 at 10:03 pm #738113
JimmyGMemberA few hundred protesters (on a good day) does NOT a revolution make.
They like to chant “the whole world is watching”, yet hardly anyone is paying attention. Even the mainstream media here is Seattle is bored of them and that’s saying something.
Take the time and read their General Assembly minutes; there is in-fighting, they waste hours on “process”, they have come out with no meaningful way to address their myriad grievances, and now there is an infestation in the camp.
The fact they sit down there swilling Starbucks, livestreaming via their Apple products, and using the McDonalds bathroom shows their lack of a cohesive argument for why they are even there.
October 23, 2011 at 10:24 pm #738114
JanSParticipantso you would be happier if they were swilling swamp water, using a decade old Gateway, and peeing in the bushes?
October 23, 2011 at 10:29 pm #738115
kootchmanMemberYes. It would be more authentic. Viva la revolucion’ Ah, the depths of deep social conviction. Very very Seattle like.
October 23, 2011 at 10:32 pm #738116
JanSParticipantlolol…
October 23, 2011 at 10:58 pm #738117
JimmyGMemberI don’t care what they eat or drink, which products they buy, or that they piss in the bathrooms of one of the largest corporations in the world.
Yet their willingness to use these products and patronize businesses of which they claim to be ranting about takes away a huge chunk of their credibility as well as showing a lack of commitment to some of their self-identified causes.
It’s also a hilarious testament to their inability to see why the “movement” hasn’t taken off.
I’ve been at many of their GA’s over the past few weeks, I’ve watched them bog down in arguments over pitching tents, who can bang drums at what hours, and the proper use of their hand signals (bad twinkle, anyone?).
They have moved so far away from their original nebulous statements on why they’re there that I now view them as great street theater.
If I get my meal to-go at one of the nearby restaurants and take it over to Westlake Park, I get dinner AND a show.
What they do is of little consequence to me personally, and I support their right to protest but if they think they’re making progress in advancing their cause they are quite misguided.
October 23, 2011 at 11:02 pm #738118
JiggersMemberI haven’t heard a drum bang this afternoon at all …lol
October 25, 2011 at 5:48 am #738119
Betty TMemberIn case anyone’s interested, —No Nickelodians went to jail! The mayor offered them a place to camp.
October 25, 2011 at 5:54 am #738120
metrognomeParticipantthey’re only in Westlake during the day and they’re moving to SCCC over the weekend.
http://today.seattletimes.com/2011/10/occupy-seattle-votes-to-move-base-to-sccc/
JimmyG — kinda sounds like a participatory democracy to me, like we usedta have in this country until people decided American Idle was more important that watching CSPAN and understanding how your government works.
October 25, 2011 at 7:03 am #738121
kootchmanMembermetrognome a great post!!! Unintended maybe, or maybe not.
“American Idle” … now that is an apropos title…
Now, off to be idle and watch American Idol
October 25, 2011 at 8:07 am #738122
JanSParticipantit X Factor for now, not American Idol – lol. Actually, I’m acquainted with one of the 16 finalists on X Factor, so have a personal reason for watching. Check it out, and pay attention to Leroy Bell..he’s one terrific singer :) A local guy, even…not West Seattle local, but supported by many here in Westseattleland…
ok, commercial over…back to the original programming
October 25, 2011 at 8:30 am #738123
HMC RichParticipant99% nah. I believe in the 2%. http://www.funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/2773095/i+am+the+two+percent/
October 25, 2011 at 8:33 am #738124
HMC RichParticipantParticipatory Democracy? Well, at least you get to vote on American Idol, not on CSPAN.
October 25, 2011 at 12:49 pm #738125
redblackParticipant“corporations good, government bad.” eh, rich? now there’s a simple message.
October 25, 2011 at 4:02 pm #738126
365StairsParticipantJust got a call from the prostesters…They’re all stuck in the 99 traffic jam and will be a little late…
Seriously…D(B)P…not that I wanted out of the deal…I would’ve loved our field trip…but I can’t be chasing down no movin’ target protesters now…ya dig?
Although dinner AND a show intrigues me…I’m a day late and $$ short…in debt up to ears…
October 25, 2011 at 4:10 pm #738127
YardvarkMemberIt’s been awesome to hear all of the conversations that this movement is generating. I’m so grateful to all those who’ve been braving the rain and cold. Urban Camping isn’t what’s wrong with our economy, or our government, or the overlap of the two, though.
While the occupation delivers a useful daily presence, the real progress takes place when we all start participating in our government and demand that our voices and our votes (whichever form they take) count more than someone else’s dollars.
October 25, 2011 at 4:27 pm #738128
kootchmanMemberVotes or dollars… they mean the same thing. Ironic, last night’s rund raiser was in the Belaggio. Why not? If you are going to gamble high stakes, with other peoples money..there is no better place.
October 25, 2011 at 4:47 pm #738129
YardvarkMemberUgh. That’s gross. General admission to hear the US President speak at this event was $1,000. If you wanted to take a picture with him, he charged $25,000.
Here’s the invite:
http://media.lasvegassun.com/media/pdfs/blogs/documents/2011/10/23/POTUS_invite.pdf
Is this really how we want for public campaigns to be funded? By people who are willing (and able) to pay $25K for a quick photo? Inherently, these are folks who either have no idea how to rationally spend money or are expecting a nice return on their “investment.”
Either way, it seems we’ve somehow strayed from the path of a true democracy, beholden to the general public, and into a form of government that goes to the highest bidder.
October 25, 2011 at 5:36 pm #738130
365StairsParticipant$25K for a pic with prez…ok…high stakes photo shop opp…
How about universities & Corps paying individual Jersey Shore cast mates anywhere from $10k to $100K for speaking gigs…
What I wouldn’t give to watch a “Snooki” or “The Situation” elaborate on preparing others for the onslaught of life’s little mysteries…”Yo…where’s my hair spray bitches?”
Oh..damn…this was a thread jack…sorry…
October 25, 2011 at 5:46 pm #738131
YardvarkMemberSadly, it wasn’t a thread jack, 365.
You just successfully and reasonably placed The President of the Free World in the same company with Snooki & The Situation.
The truth of that comparison is painful to admit.
