BBBMemberMy house appears to have an ant problem. I would like to know if anyone has a recommendation for a honest, reliable post control company that services West Seattle. Thank you

hopeyParticipantA couple of things you can do on your own:
1) Watch and figure out the path the ants are taking through and, if possible, into your home. Wash that path thoroughly with soap. Ants leave a chemical trail for other ants to follow, so if you remove the path, they will find a dead end.
2) Go to the hardware store and buy boric acid powder. It’s cheap and will be in the pest removal section. Sometimes the packaging says it’s for roaches, but it works for ants also. Boric acid dehydrates the ants to the point that it kills them. They will actively avoid it. Use the boric acid powder anywhere you’ve seen the ants entering your home — ants were coming in one of my doorways, so I put a barrier line across the entire threshold. You can use it around your baseboards, anywhere you’ve seen them coming in.
The packaging will say it’s unsafe for pets, but from everything I’ve read that is only in large quantaties; if your pet walks across it and then licks their paw, it shouldn’t be a problem, but do your own research of course. (I use an ear powder for my dogs that contains boric acid as one of the ingredients, so it can’t be that toxic!)
I also seem to recall something about putting out a shallow pan of water to capture the ants, but I don’t remember how that’s supposed to work. I’m sure Google can give you some answers though.
Hopefully these tips will help you in the short term while you look for a pest control company… or maybe they’ll be enough to solve the problem on your own. :)

IrukandjiParticipantAnd if all the DIY work doesn’t get you the results you need, track down AAA Pest Control in Kent. They have been a great resource for info and services for us for YEARS, often steering us toward DIY measures rather than having us hire them. Don’t bother with Terminix.

squareeyesParticipantI was very happy with Cascade Pest Control. My problem was subterranean termites so I can’t comment on their ant control methods. But, while inspecting my termite problem, he did point out areas where I was ‘inviting’ ant infestation and made suggestions on how I could correct that.

HomerParticipantGoing off of what Hopey said, if you can find a thing of Boraxo (the granular cheap hand soap), this naturally has borax in it so this sprinkled around will cause the ants to carry this back to their “home” and “defeat” the nest

BBBMemberHey – thanks so much for all the input. I’ll try some of the DIY efforts. I also really appreciate the input on professional pest control places.

biankatParticipantJust had Terminix come out to spray our property for carpenter ants – they’ve destroyed our railroad tie retaining wall and were coming into the house. Very prompt and respectable servicemen did the work.

They do all kinds of pests. Have been in business for years. The owner is a friend of mine, but I use his company too. Others that have used this company in W. Seattle and Renton have had nothing but good to say about the service: fast, reliable, thorough, good follow-up, has taken care of the problem (in these cases with mice, yellow jackets)in 1-2 visits. Might have a website.

karentMemberWe had Nordic Pest Control come out. We wanted someone who used safe products. Using a Green company was important to us. I would recommend them to anyone. I hope this helps. Their number is 206-373-1334

anonymeParticipantTake hopey’s advice to start with. I’ve actually used regular Borax all along the door or entry area, as well as cleaned the floors thoroughly. Ants leave a scent trail that must be thoroughly removed, or they’ll keep coming back. If you absolutely have to go with a pest control company, there’s none better than John with Adept Pest Control. Look him up on the blog; nothing but rave reviews.
