WFMemberrespectful debate is part of a healthy democracy. the problem is that things in seattle have gotten way to one sided to left field.
what about those of us in the center who want to see government focus on basics first, infrastructure maintenance, libraries properly funded, parks, be top priority paid for via the general fund not levies?
July 18, 2013 at 2:19 am #793814
JoBParticipantWF..
as it happens, this is Seattle.. not say Cle Elum where the “conservative” voices outnumber the liberal.
that’s the way the cookie crumbles here..
this notion that we are all divided down some ideological line that has to be somehow fairly balanced is getting us nowhere.
now we have left, right and center all claiming the high road?
i think you would be hard pressed to find anyone in any political camp who doesn’t agree with this..
“who want to see government focus on basics first, infrastructure maintenance, libraries properly funded, parks, be top priority paid for via the general fund not levies?
the truth is that when it comes to individuals, we want pretty much the same things…
July 18, 2013 at 3:52 am #793815
WFMemberyes job we want these services and they should be paid via the use of general fund tax money NOT levies
July 18, 2013 at 5:15 am #793816
JoBParticipantWF..
agreed.. but if they aren’t, are you willing to give up those services because the only way they get paid is through levies?
just asking..
i’d like to live in the land of should too
but unfortunately it seems this is where i have landed

WFMemberi am willing to see the City spend less on social services. what the City has been doing for a long time is de-funding (taking away) basic services (street maintenance, parks, libraries) to fund social services! look at the street maintenance back log as an example.
if the City wants to fund social services put those items on the ballot and let the voters vote on them instead!

skeeterParticipantI miss Redblack. I didn’t agree with him on most issues, but he was always a very sharp thinker that caused me to pause and think. Wakeflood is another quality poster even though we rarely agree.
On the conservative side I particularly miss Hooper. WF is doing a fine job in his/her absence.

anonymeParticipantI agree with Skeeter. I miss redblack, and welcome wakeflood. Not only are they good writers, but I know (or knew, in the case of rb) to expect intelligent, well thought out, well-documented comments free of hyperbole and proselytizing.
July 18, 2013 at 2:18 pm #793821
miwsParticipantredblack is still around.
He had some (positive) life changes several months back, which are keeping him busy.
I’ve seen him pop up here and there, but maybe mostly in comments on Main Page stories.
As much as my thoughts and beliefs are aligned with the majority that post here, redblack is the one, that quite frequently while reading his comments, I wonder what the hell he’s doing in my head.

TDeParticipantSome folks have dropped off simply because of time constraints, which limits in-depth discussion on topics. Some of us may not be the best of writers or deepest of thinkers as others who are sorely missed in the forums, but I know of several, including myself who still enjoy reading when we can and will even drop a note here and there when time permits. There are others who’ve told me they became tired of the same old political fights that seemed to continue after the national election and wanted to move on. To imply that EVERYONE who has disappeared from the forums has done so because of any self-appointed monitoring is incorrect. Anyone may post any opinion or response to any opinion(within the guidelines) as they wish and as many times as they wish. Doesn’t make frequent posters into self-appointed monitors.

JoBParticipantWF.. we have different priorities..
July 18, 2013 at 4:22 pm #793826
WFMemberjob i believe basic infrastructure maintenance, libraries and parks as a core government function and it is not appropriate to fund these by a levy. if you want extra services beyond these use levies.
it would be refreshing to see the city not de-fund basic services and then use levies to fund the popular basics. this is very disingenuous process because they use the general fund money that they should be using for basics to pay for other items that voters may or may not approve levy funding for.
why not let the voters decide on these other non core services via levy? this would be much more appropriate and fair to everyone. explain to me what is unfair about this?

July 18, 2013 at 11:38 pm #793831
WFMembersummer is fleeting in seattle, enjoy the sun when you can
July 19, 2013 at 12:36 am #793832
JoBParticipantWF..
you get to decide. you can vote them out of office and vote someone in who you think will do a better job..
unfortunately. .that is part of the reality we are stuck with… regardless of our priorities

WFMemberjob it would be good if renters had to pay bi yearly tax bills to the county like property owners!
July 19, 2013 at 3:30 am #793835
WFMemberand why the city does not take care of basic services first is very disingenuous.
July 19, 2013 at 3:33 am #793836
JoBParticipantWF
we do..
you didn’t know that property owners include their tax bills when calibrating their rent?
mine went up last year.. due to taxes.
even though i pay the bill, the landlord gets the write off
how fair is that?
July 19, 2013 at 3:40 am #793837
WFMemberthat may be true, but it does not have the same direct effect of getting the tax bill and writing and mailing a check to the County twice a year.
what write off?
