I moved to West Seattle recently, so firstly: hello! My wife & I (and our newborn son) are enjoying living over here so far. Have been reading WSBlog since we moved, but time to jump on the forums now.

As per the title, it’s high time we bought a car. I’ve not owned a car before, so I’m trying to figure out lots of things (make/model/year in particular) but I thought I could turn to the forums for some local help.

Are there any used car places in/near West Seattle? I see a couple of old references to places that look like they’ve shut down.

If you know anywhere nearby that you’d recommend, that’d be most appreciated. It seems there’s something of a catch-22 here: because there are lots of used-car places out of town, you need a car to get there, so I’d prefer to try something closer to home first, if possible.

    Thanks!

If you’d post an idea of what you want and what you want to pay, maybe somebody would have something for sale, or know somebody who does.

The last Consumer Reports was an auto issue. You should be able to look at it in the library. It covers new cars, but also has a section on the reliability of used cars, indexed by maker.

While there are no used car dealers that I know of in the local area, if you are looking for a decent used car, you are spot-on to take Katherine’s advice and look at Consumer Reports’ reliability ratings. Once you’ve narrowed down what you want/need, then start your search here, Craigslist, or go through a Certified pre-owned type program through a dealership in the greater Seattle area (or Portland in some cases).

    Best of luck!

Not all local of course, but NW Auto in the Seattle Times is a great place to look for cars:

I just bought a certified used Subaru — the closest dealer is in Ballard. Love this car. The certified used program gives an extended powertrain warranty, plus original bumper-to-bumper warranty. Our car is like new, but several thousands of dollars cheaper. Lots of car makers have “certified used” cars. When you have a child, the warranty can really add peace of mind (ie. no big out-of-pocket expenses for repairs for the first few years of your child’s life).

But what are you looking for, and what price?
