hopeyParticipantWhy? What’s in it for me that I can’t already get on the WSB forums?
May 23, 2012 at 6:33 am #758943
JanSParticipantit’s not a news site…it’s just more intimate for your own neighborhood, to share ideas, to share whatever. If you don’t think it’s for you, then don’t join…but let others decide for themselves…and why does there have to be “something in it for you”? besides liking/supporting your own neighborhood. It’s good to know who your neighbors are, don’t you think?

hopeyParticipantNeither the initial post nor the link provided gave any compelling information about what unique benefits would be provided by joining. Technically the initial post was a statement, not an inquiry or invitation, which I also found a little strange. Normally people who want others to join a cause or community will have something a little more descriptive to say about it. Thus the “why?” question from me.
My free time is limited, so I would need to understand why I should spend more of it on a different site if WSB is already providing similar benefits to me.

JanSParticipantthis community is very lucky to have WSB. It’s unique to us. Not all communities have something like it. Nextdoor.com obviously helps those communities more. I just look at this as another tool in the tool belt, something specific to the community inside the community that I live in. For those who wonder what it’s about, here’s the basic link…

KevinParticipantNextdoor.com is a GREAT site! I’m a member of the Arbor Heights Nextdoor site. Membership is limited to folks who live in a specific neighborhood.
Think of nextdoor as a rather intimate venue to to discuss neighborhood news. Things that would probably NOT get covered on the WSB.
The site allows posting links and pictures.
Sign up and give it a try! If you don’t like it, you don’t have to use it. You also have the option to set up email notifications when some other neighbor posts. Nice to not have to manually check the site every day.
It is probably a little like a neighborhood block watch. In our group, we routinely get the word out about a solicitor on a specific street.
Probably one of the most compelling reasons to join is that you are able to “meet” more of your neighbors!

JanSParticipantthanks, Kevin, for the good word. I heard about this, and decided to start this Admiral Central Group..hope it works…

JanSParticipantyou might be more in the Belvidere region…maybe you could start your own Nextdoor neighborhood…

KevinParticipantIs it only the southern tip of the peninsula that gets this? Our Arbor Heights Nextdoor group has over 100 members and is still growing. We hope to at least double our membership before the end of summer.

JanSParticipantlol…no..have not gone door to door. I’m simply not that mobile. I have even emailed some of the businesses in the general area, hoping to even get some of them on board.
I think nextdoor is a great idea, and don’t know why more people aren’t joining this up here in Admiral. There are other Admiral neighborhoods on there, too. But this central area is huge, and I have extended the borders of it twice now. I only know so many people to invite, and hopefully those who have already joined will get the word out, too.
I dunno…maybe the people in my ‘hood are a bit more standoffish…a shame…I hope not

JanSParticipantby the way, folks…the borders of this Admiral District Central neighborhood on Nextdoor.com are…SW Hanford to the south, 48th SW to the west, SW Hill St. to the north, and Fairmount Ave. SW to the east, with a little outpocket on the north side of Admiral Way to include Belvedere and Grayson. If you live in that area, please consider joining us, and sharing events, resources, information…get to know your immediate neighborhood and neighbors
May 25, 2012 at 11:15 pm #758954
GinaParticipantIt looks like a large area, until you consider that West Seattle High School, Hiawatha, Lafayette, Safeway, Met Market, the PCC and all the businesses that occupy land, but have no residents. Are businesses welcome at Nextdoor?
May 25, 2012 at 11:33 pm #758955
JanSParticipantI have invited some…I figured they’re part of the ‘hood, too. The owner of Angelina’s has become a member. We need two more members to be “official”.
One scenario I thought about was…a business is robbed, the perp runs away through the neighborhood. Word can go out immediately to tell people to look out…

WSBKeymasterI just request that those who get involved in these microsites don’t forget that this is not so huge a community that a robber or prowler in Admiral won’t turn up in The Junction minutes later, even in the two minutes it takes you to put word out on your microsite instead of to the larger community. Walled gardens may have their benefits but they also have their downsides. – TR

JanSParticipantTrue, that, TR.
