herongrrrlParticipantJust curious how things are going with other hummingbird feeders in the area.
We had at least 4 Anna’s visiting our feeder on a very regular basis through the winter. We would see them feeding at regular times throughout the day and had to refill the feeder at least once a week to keep up with their demand.
Suddenly, nobody’s coming to the feeder at all! I am assuming (hoping) this is because they now have better options as flowers are starting to bloom, but it seems pretty abrupt and I’m hoping they didn’t somehow come to harm. Anyone else still seeing Anna’s at their feeders?

melissaParticipantHummingbird-palooze here in Arbor Heights. All kinds of hummingbird hijinks in the neighborhood, as well. I had two males having a face-off in my yard today and saw several (heard several more) as I walked down the hill towards the Fauntleroy Ferry.
There are so many delecatable flowers out there right now that they have lots of options besides our feeders. They’ll come back when they need to.

MargLMemberYep, lots of them in Arbor Heights for sure!
Haven’t seen them at the feeder but last week had 2 buzzing around the front yard gathering seed fluff from the Japanese anemone to do some nest building.

timeslidParticipantI also had two very active feeders with Anna’s this winter. Now they have also vanished. Moved out to better flowers perhaps.

christopherboffoliParticipantI’ve had traffic INCREASE at my feeder near the Junction. During the winter I’ve had my regulars. But lately I’ve seen some new birds including a male Anna that I call the “Darth Maul” hummingbird as his red cap and markings remind me of the villain from Star Wars The Phantom Menace. My garden is a LONG way from having anything to attract them away from the feeder. Everything was devastated by the freezing this winter. Even the usually hardy rosemary got wiped out.

AnonymousInactivechristopherbollofoni – do you have any pics of the Darth Maul bird??!?!???

christopherboffoliParticipantThe Darth Maul hummer has been notoriously difficult to catch on film. But I was able to get this one solitary image:

I’m beginning to think I’ve discovered a new species. When I see him take out a tiny little double-sided light saber to chase the other hummers away from the feeder I’ll know for sure.

AnonymousInactiveThat’s uncanny. Hopefully there’s an Obi-Wan bird out there to keep this guy in check.

RainyDay1235MemberThere were a small collection at Camp Long (Rufus and Anna) on Saturday at our clean-up party!

B-squaredParticipantWith the warmer weather, they don’t need quite so much nectar. there are also quite a few things in bloom that they can take advantage of. also, i would think they would thinking about nest building soon and might be off doing that. watch for the rufous hummingbird – they are up here now. i have had a couple using the feeders now that the anna’s are pre-occupied.

CreightonMemberUp here just West of the Junction we see a few of the same ones visit several times a day. Not many, but very consistent in their visitation. Just realized that they make a buzzing noise, er humming noise, when they fly…hence the name humming bird…oh I get it now.
