YardvarkMemberI went on the grand opening night, Saturday.
Maybe the kindest review is just to say the grand opening is always the most challenging night a restaurant is likely to have.

JanSParticipantYardvark…thanks for finding something positive to say :)
January 11, 2010 at 3:56 pm #686288
beachdrivegirlParticipantI had friends go on Satuday night. It sounded like they were out of alot of their food. And they got their martini warm, but like yardvark said it was opening night.

voodooMemberI also heard a similar report from a friend who went on Saturday night. She did say she would give them another try, though, before passing final judgement. I may give them a couple of weeks then stop in to see for myself.

QueMemberMy family went on Sunday night and in response to the difficulties that they had on Saturday night with the full menu, they had an abbreviated menu that they were offering and it was Happy Hour pricing from 4pm to close. So, we had a bunch of appetizers and salad and a burger was split between my daughter and husband.
Most stuff was pretty good actually. The fries that came with the burger are tempura-style and were too greasy, but the rest of what we ate was pretty yummy.
I talked to them that if they have decided that they want to attract a family croud, then they need to have a kid’s menu.
I think that they are still working the kinks out, give them some time to figure things out and I think that it is promising.

GAnativeParticipantWe went last night and with mixed reviews…there were 6 of us.
We tried 4 of the apps – the No Ka Oi Crab Cakes and Honey Walnut Prawns were good; the Crispy Calamari was cooked too long and was tough; I didn’t have one of the Blue Cheese Stuffed Chicken Wings but the others said they didn’t see or taste any blue cheese in it.
The Crab Bisque was very good.
For entrees we had the Lamb Shank Osso Buco, Gulf Prawn Etouffee, Famous French Dip, Smokey Cheddar Buffalo Burger and I think it was called the Triple Medley (3 petite filets and mashed pots) and everything was good except for the french fries which were cold and greasy.
They had a 2007 Cote du Rhone on the wine menu for a great price which they ran out of before we needed a second bottle. Guess everyone else thought it was a great price too…
For dessert we ordered 2 of the Chocolate Fondant and they accidently brought us the Chocolate Truffle and then brought us the correct one at no charge. Both were yummy.
The staff was attentive but we had to ask for catsup a couple of times.
All in all we enjoyed it and will go again.

NWESMemberUnfortunately for me, I have been to Table 35. This past Saturday, March 20th, has been my final attempt. I live around the corner, and after years of my tried and true favorites like Elliot Bay, Jak’s, and WE5, I was eager to have a new addition in the hood. I didn’t judge Table 35 on their frantic opening, or even a month later when they suddenly announced they weren’t doing happy hour from 4- close. Ok, I can pay double the price for the meager appetizers. They taste good, most of the time.
But this last weekend topped the chart. I also work as a cook in a downtown restaurant, so I think I can relate to the stress amongst restaurant staff. I have never witnessed anything like I saw Saturday. The owner of the restaurant, in his pastel-colored vest and suit, insulted and reprimanded our waitress right in front of our table. I was honestly uncomfortable. We asked her for another few beers at our table, and when she went to order them, he screamed at her to get in the office. I don’t know what’s going on within their private restaurant life, but there is no excuse to be humiliating workers like that in front of others. I don’t know what he was angry at, and perhaps he had his reasons. But you just don’t expose your guests to the problems within the staff. It was awkward and inhospitable, and I don’t want to waste good money on an experience like that. Thankfully, we have so many better choices in this area!

todd_ParticipantNWES – So, you witnessed something Saturday night. Another wait person commented here yesterday (Wednesday) about the way customers were treated by the owner and that they were yelled at infront of customers, and fired that Wednesday night, but it was taken down about 5 minutes after it was put up. WSB perogative no doubt.
.
I wont be going to this restaurant based on the 2 first hand accounts of how staff is treated and how more than one customer has been made to feel uncomfortable by management there. BTW, if one has a rant against a place of business and the rant is with the manager, how is one supposed to follow the pre-ranting rules by speaking with the manager???
March 26, 2010 at 5:04 am #686294
NWESMembertodd– that is a great question!! I kept re-reading the rant rules while writing my post, wondering if I was violating rights. I wish I had read that other person’s post before it was deleted. They probably saw the same thing I did.
March 26, 2010 at 5:11 am #686295
The Velvet BulldogParticipantEven if the problem is the manager–you should tell that manager. I once had a Safeway checker (someone who’d been there forever and was obviously a manager) dress down a bagging assistant for being late. He was clearly embarrassed and walked away. I let her know that I didn’t think it was necessary to do that in front of a customer. She responded “Oh, he doesn’t care.” I said, “Well *I* care.” She ignored that and just rang me up and sent me on my way. I suppose the manager can choose to ignore your complaint (as this one did) but it’s still good to make him aware of inappropriate behavior.

miwsParticipantIf you ever have any questions on whether something is appropriate to post or not, you could probably just run it past WSB via e-mail, at editor@westseattleblog.com, first.

MargLMemberHmm… now see this goes back to Christopher’s post on “scary” chefs and intimidating restaurants. I hardly ever interact with the chefs, except thru the food, but the waitstaff and management have such an opportunity to make an impression, good or bad. If it’s bad, I’m not sure I’d go back even if the food was fantastic!
I still haven’t tried Table 35 or Porterhouse but I’m hesitant to try either…
March 26, 2010 at 7:25 am #686298
JanSParticipantMargL..I doubt that I will ever set foot in Table 35. There is nothing to entice me about the place. When they first announced that they were going to open, they said it would be unlike anything else in West Seattle. In a way, I guess it is. I’m very suspect of why they closed their place on the eastside and moved over here.
I’ve been to Porterhouse, right after they opened. It was OK…just OK…great beer, though. We have choices now in the Admiral District. Mission, Circa, Angelina’s, Royal India, and soon to be Heartland Cafe. I don’t find myself thinking that , oh, I should go to Porterhouse, when I infrequently go out to eat.
NWES..so sorry you had to witness that. I think I would have gotten up and left(paid the bill first, of course! with an extra tip for the waitperson just because)
March 26, 2010 at 2:02 pm #686299
SmittyParticipantI’ve been there two times and had great food and very good service both times. IMO that is a difficult place to make “work”. They have done a wonderful job with the ambience via lighting, well-placed “dividers” and soft (live) music.
It doesn’t hurt when you also have a good wine list, attentive service and good food (from sliders to filet mignon).
I really hope they make it.
edit: Wow, guess I’m in the minority – what’s new!
March 26, 2010 at 2:04 pm #686300
HelperMonkeyParticipantI have a friend who was also there on the same night as NWES, it sounds like. She said it was awful to watch. A little tact would have been in order here – if you’re going to dress down the waitress, do it in private – not in front of paying customers…some of whom work in the service industry!
March 26, 2010 at 2:45 pm #686301
webshafParticipantWe went a couple of weeks ago for lunch. Good food, good service…I’m a bit of a miser, so the prices were a bit high for me…had some great Motown music playing.
March 26, 2010 at 3:39 pm #686302
KBearParticipantI was looking forward to trying Table 35. I guess I won’t now. I don’t care how good the food is, I don’t want to support an owner who treats his employees and customers that way. Even if the reprimand was necessary, doing it in front of the customers is completely unacceptable.
March 26, 2010 at 5:53 pm #686303
HSAlkiMemberHi there. I am the waitress who was fired on Saturday night from Table 35. And it didn’t happen because there were issues with my employment– it happened because of the owner’s temper. When he yelled at me in front of my customers, I didn’t get defensive or upset. I followed him in the office and told him calmly that I think there was a misunderstanding. He screamed at me to get out now.
Thank you very much to the people on this blog who have sympathized. Two of my customers actually followed me out of the restaurant to offer their moral support. I am so grateful to people for speaking up about this, because the injustice of it all is still frustrating me.
March 26, 2010 at 6:42 pm #686304
todd_ParticipantHSAlki, I was going to respond to your original post the other night but by the time I logged in, it was gone. I am glad I saw it though and I am glad a number of people witnessed this incident in the restaurant and can share what they saw and how they felt, independently, by commenting on this blog.
I am glad you checked back in with us. I meant to state earlier that your original post was very mature and reasonable and I saw nothing wrong with what you said.
I feel bad for you that this happened but you are better off not working there. Best of luck to you.
March 26, 2010 at 6:53 pm #686305
HSAlkiMemberThank you todd– you just made my Friday a little lighter!
You are right, I will be better off. As far as the post being deleted, I did email the editor to ask why– I was told it was flagged as inappropriate by a member. I can only assume it was a “member” of the restaurant.
But sincerely, thank you. I appreciate it.
March 26, 2010 at 6:55 pm #686306
GenHillOneParticipantI can see why the first post was pulled, only because one never knows the motivation and it’s only one side of the story. (btw, a “member” is a forum member – any registered user – not necessarily anyone with the restaurant) A judgement call for sure, but better safe than sorry. It sounds like there are unrelated substantiations in this case though…eek.
March 27, 2010 at 12:44 am #686307
texasMemberI witnessed a temper tantrum by the owner of one of our west seattle coffee shops. I am sure anyone who has worked there knows exactly which one I mean. I will never go there again. Someone with a temper problem has no business managing people.
March 31, 2010 at 12:47 am #686308
HelperMonkeyParticipantRegardless of anything else about Table 35, I would like to say I think it looks TRASHY from the outside. Crappy looking sign all crooked, and now they’ve put in a scrolling LED light at the front window. Trashy. Such a change from the last two wonderful restaurants that were there. If I didn’t know anything else about it, I wouldn’t go there just based on the appearance from the street. Just my opinion.

rdmParticipantBring back Godfathers, or better yet Shakeys.
