JoBParticipanti apologize for starting a new thread but my headache won’t let my eyes get to the old one…
i have been taking incredible calls and emails for donations for bags for our Handbags for Hunger silent auction event to benefit the West Seattle Food Bank and Dress for Success tomorrow (sunday) at the Beveridge Place Pub from 2:30 to 4:00 PM.
I have also received two bags of clothing to bring for dress for success tomorrow.. and a fair amount of food….
and of course… a certain someone has threatened to show up with a shopping basket full of food… we will see… he may just take it directly to the food bank:)
and i have not been the only one to recieve handbags so far and the list of designer labels is pretty impressive… spade, Dooney and Burke, Follis, Monsac, Coach, Liz Caliborne, etc… and that’s just a few…
there are still bags that will show up unannounced tomorrow….
in fact, you are welcome to bring your own donations…. we will be accepting bags from 2PM to 2:45 PM tomorrow for the auction … after that any coming in will go directly to dress for success…
we also have a fair number of utility bags.. shopping bags, book bags, small bags, briefcases… backpacks… all new or nearly new.
We are going to have a lot of bags! … with a fair number of high end designer bags nestled among the merely trendy…
There will be literally something for everyone!
We also have representatives from the West Seattle Food Bank.. and from Dress for Success who will be on hand to take our donations and tell us something about the services they provide our community.
We are prepared to take non-perishable food donations for the food bank… women’s work attire for Dress for Success and checks for both organizations in addition to what we will generate at the auction.
We are sorry we won’t be able to accept debit or credit cards at the auction but will gladly accept your cash and checks:)
At this point we know we will have plenty of bags and a fair number of donations…
all we need now is for you to show up…
I know i speak on behalf of your fellow WSB members who are hosting this event when i say we can’t wait to meet you and have a great time tomorrow..

JoBParticipantour event gets billing :))))
We are in the top right corner.. right under the search bar.
how cool is that?
thanks WSB for helping us get the word out!
March 16, 2008 at 1:21 am #618967
JanSParticipantI second the thanks to WSB…this whole thing has snowballed and come together so quickly..it’s wonderful.
And I want to thanks JoB for her wonderful idea to begin with. :)
Now..is there something I can do to help your head before the big event? :)
March 16, 2008 at 1:23 am #618968
charlabobParticipantIf you have last-minute donations and you live around Admiral, or between Admiral and BPP, let me know and we’ll pick them up on our way — of course, we’d much rather you show up in person and BUY!
There are going to be some great things for sale, far beyond the “look in the back of your closet and bring your rejects,” genre we’d originally imagined.
March 16, 2008 at 2:13 am #618969
JoBParticipantdress code ????
what are we going to wear with our incredibly sheik new handbags????
clothes would be good. we will be in a public place….
it’s a pub… We’ll be in jeans:) or chinos:) or….
this is west seattle after all:)
isn’t that why we live here?
besides, with any luck the house will come out from under his bridge…
and we really do want to make him feel at home…
though i have known many a well dressed troll to wear a tux:)

WSBKeymasterFYI all, so that we can get a picture on the site in a timely manner, one of us will drop down the hill (we live a straight-line mile south from BPP) to get a photo of the amassed handbags and organizers probably around 2:10 or so, will race back to post it for the ‘happening now’ item, then will be back an hour or so later for photos in the thick of things. After it’s over (no rush, whenever you compile the #’s), please make sure somebody sends us a note (or posts it here in the forum and alerts us it’s posted) with the total take. We won’t be able to hang out for the duration because our son is sick for the first time literally in years (102 fever at the moment) – happened very suddenly after we got home from last night’s Skylark event – and so we’re both very nervous. (I’m sitting around googling how much ibuprofen is safe for a 12-year-old of adult weight …) Anyway, enough about us. Just wanted to let you know we’ll be down for a pre-event pic.
March 16, 2008 at 4:03 am #618971
JanSParticipant:( I’m so sorry to hear about your son, TR…there is so much crud going around out there at the moment. But 102…that sucks for sure. Hope he gets some sleep and feels better soon…

JoBParticipantMarch 16, 2008 at 5:20 am #618973
SueParticipantI am hoping to get there – I’ve got an appt. from 2 to around 3pm and am begging my husband for a lift over on his way elsewhere. So if I don’t make it, we can blame him, okay? :)
March 17, 2008 at 12:25 am #618974
JoBParticipantthanks to everyone for making this event a real success… We had a great turnout… and plenty of handbags for everyone.
We raised nearly $700 for the food bank… in both donations and auction proceeds… and Pete from the food bank said he thought we had at least 300 pounds of donated food. They were very pleased since all of that will be doubled in their donation challenge,
There were nearly 150 handbags and other bags donated… and at the end, Dress for Success Seattle took at least 50 bags back for their clients.. along with some donated cash and 3 huge bags of women’s clothing.
Windemere Realty on California is a local collection site for Dress for Success Seattle.. so if you didn’t get to the event today and want to donate… you can drop women’s work and interview attire (clean and on hangers), shoes, handbags, accessories and donations there.
the social portion of the event was also a huge success.. i left at 5 and there were still a huge number of forum members gathered having great conversation…
We already have an idea for the next event…
anyone interested in a West Seattle Blog Forum addicts social either before or after the Community Recognition Awards?
March 17, 2008 at 12:50 am #618975
WSMomParticipantSo funny you would use the word addict…my husband & children have been calling me a “blog addict”. Thank you JoB for organizing Handbags for Hunger. I so enjoyed putting faces to names. There are some people I wish I had a chance to meet…kayleigh, JT to name just two. I hope we do another get together again very soon!
March 17, 2008 at 1:12 am #618976
katydidMemberJoB, The Charla half of C/Bob, JanS, Franci and was the other lady Jan too? did a wonderful job in a week…somebody should hire this team. Congratulations to the five of you…
I would love another WSBF addict social.
It was fun to meet all you WSB’ers there and put names to faces. And House is gonna help me out with my Sprint problem. Turns out he is a really nice guy (even tho he’s a registered R) :-)
March 17, 2008 at 1:45 am #618977
BonnieParticipantcongratulations on a wonderful event!
March 17, 2008 at 2:33 am #618978
JoBParticipantI would thank all the volunteers who made this event happen today individually.. but i am honestly not sure who all of them are.
This was truly a community event with many volunteers who just came forwarded and worked to make this a success.
We were unprepared for so many handbags:)
I am proud of us today.

GinaParticipantUp until 2 I was hoping for a miracle healing of my broncitis, no such luck. I really wanted to go!
March 17, 2008 at 3:22 am #618980
AnonymousInactiveI had SUCH a great time today meeting everyone! That was the coolest get together, we raised over $600.00!! I love my new bags! Thank you, JoB and everyone else that put their time and effort into putting that together!
March 17, 2008 at 7:46 am #618981
charlabobParticipantIt was great meeting new people, seeing people we hadn’t seen for at least a week — and generally doing good and having fun. My beret is especially off to House for coming early, staying late, donating, and engaging with the people and the cause. WS and the forum-ites really are a community.

hopeyParticipantI am lousy at socializing in a crowd, but I was there! I do better when I can be part of the event planning & organizing I guess. My schedule is a little more forgiving these days, so hopefully the next event (there WILL be another one, won’t there?) I’ll be able to participate more.
March 18, 2008 at 12:04 am #618983
JoBParticipanthopey.. we would love to have you in on the planning for the next one!
March 18, 2008 at 3:15 am #618984
TheHouseMemberI had a really good time yesterday. It was actually cool to meet all of the folks that make the blog tick (Jan, JoB, Charla, Bob, NewResident and Beachdrivegirl). The one disappointment I had was that I didn’t get a chance to meet any of the actual folks that run the WSB. I really wanted to tell you in person how happy I am to see you both turn a little tiny blog with just a handful of readers into what it is today. Awesome job!
I also thank JoB for starting the spark that created our get together.
I wish I could have gabbed with more of you, but Charla started a debate that I couldn’t resist digging my teeth into.
On a really positive note, Beveridge Place Pub announced that Charla and Jan will be permanent fixtures at the bar every Sunday. Their table will be in the corner and will have the sign “Whine Cellar” above it. Love you, libs!

JenVMemberah, I have finally achieved the ultimate in Liberal Enlightenment- I have become invisible to Republicans… :)
March 18, 2008 at 4:26 pm #618987
AnonymousInactiveLOL, JenV. I hate to burst your bubble, but it was really great to meet you and chat the little that we did. You weren’t invisible to this Republican. In fact, at the next get-together, I look forward to talking with you more!
March 18, 2008 at 5:12 pm #618988
andreaParticipantI want to say that I too had a fabulous time on Sunday and am so glad that I was able to meet so many of you forum members and finally put faces with names. I certainly hope that there are more opportunities for get-togethers in the future, cause I’m willing and able to particpiate in any way I can. Thanks everyone :)
March 18, 2008 at 5:14 pm #618989
charlabobParticipantJenV I’d be more than happy to share my place of honor with you. All you have to do is ask embarassing questions and listen to the chirping of crickets, while you await the answer. That’s called whining and I’m delighted to plead guilty. :-) It was amusing “debating” House — his responses were not always completely predictable.
And NR, I actually *enjoyed* meeting you.
Hope to see (almost) everyone again soon.
