charlabobParticipantAre you watching? What are you Wearing? Who will win? They SNUBBED “True Grit” so, imnho, who cares? :-)

DPMemberDo you think new TG was equal to the original TG?
How could that even be possible?
Might as well try to remake Casablanca.

JoBParticipantDP..
if remaking casablanca produced as good a film as remaking true git produced.. i’d pay to see it.

DPMemberOK, JoB. That’s three people I’ve heard say they liked the new version so far. I’m just interested to know in what way people think TG2 was better than (or even equal to) TG1.
Was there a more realistic horse-chase scene?
Do the characters dodge bullets in slow-mo, a la The Matrix?
Was Jeff Bridges’ Rooster Cogburn grittier than John Wayne’s?
What?

charlabobParticipantWell, I thought the first TG dragged on and on and … I watched it the day after we saw TG II and I was surprised that I preferred the second.
I think Casablanca would be harder to remake because it’s more “dated,” in some ways. Or because I like it more, so I couldn’t like a remake.
BTW, I suspect Ricky Gervais is hosting his last GG’s. People don’t seem to be rolling in the aisles at his snark. (I am — if we had aisles, I would be.)

QueMemberI loved the new True Grit, and yes, Jeff Bridges’ Rooster is grittier than John Wayne’s was. The film felt more alive to me. The cinematography was excellent. I also felt like the pacing for the new one was better.

cjboffoliParticipantI guess Paramount failed to sufficiently pay off the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for whatever a Golden Globe costs these days. At the very least the Coen brothers are laughing all the way to the bank. The film is apparently the most commercially successful of their career.

DPMemberI think I’m going to kill myself now.
No wait! I’d better go see the new movie first, like everyone else is doing.
Then I’m going to gather together all my John Wayne memorabilia (including my life-size autographed poster) and weep uncontrollably as I shoot myself in the head (with my authentic John Wayne “signature” Colt 45 army service revolver replica.)

dhgParticipantYipes. DP don’t do it!
I was never a fan of the Duke. Can’t stand any of his movies.
I am a big fan of the Cohen Brothers, who created TG2. Fargo is one of my all time favorite movies.
I haven’t seen TG2 but I remember the original and did not care for it.

JoBParticipantDP…
I don’t know how one could compare John Wayne and Jeff Bridges’s Rooster…
Grit can be measured so many ways.
the joy of theatre is that the same play (or movie) becomes a new experience with every new director and cast…
I enjoyed the Cohen bros True Grit far more than i enjoyed the original… but then.. my tastes have grown with the art.

dgirlMemberTotally loved Jeff Bridges in True Grit. Well, well, well worth seeing! Not just for Jeff (vs John Wayne) BUT, the 14 year old girl is absolutely amazing and astonishing. Loved it….as if you can’t tell!

anonymeParticipantTwo words: Jeff Bridges. This guy has aged and mellowed into something phenomenal. His Oscar-winning performance in ‘Crazy Heart’ last year was one of the most deserved Best Actors awards I’ve seen in quite a while. NPR did a piece on the new film’s language; apparently a lot of work went into researching the speech patterns of the time period, which were much more formal (no contractions!). I’ve never been a John Wayne fan, so no contest here…
Personally, I love Ricky Gervais as well. I don’t think many Americans in general (or PNW natives in particular) appreciate snark and sarcasm as they do across the pond.

JiggersMemberAl Pacino wasn’t allowed back into his post victory party. He eventually got back in, but I’m sure that security guy lost his job. How can you not know who Pacino is unless you live in a closet.

DPMember— Jiggers, ahmo letchoo finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of ALL TIME!!!!
