ScaryB4CoffeeMemberIt’s summer, and the doors are open, and the dogs are out. Woof Woof Woof on and on and on. Does this sound familiar? I’d like to see WS neighbors be considerate of others, and the dogs. I can’t believe the dogs really like to bark forever, either.

timeslidParticipantYup, its a real drag. Its like the fourth of July just turned down but constant.

JoBParticipantit’s summer and the windows are open and i get to listen to your soap opera and music and fights with your family and ….
not to mention the smells emanating from your kitchen that are making it difficult for me to stick to my diet

WSresjMemberI’m not talking about the occasional woof, woof. We have a neighbor that has three weiner dogs that get severe separation anxiety – they bark and howl, bark and howl, with short breaks for catching breath. They do this when the owners are not in the same room with them – when they go away, its all night long. I swear some dog owners are so used to their dogs that they can’t hear it any more.

wakefloodParticipantInability to understand how one’s actions impact other humans is endemic in this country. The rugged individualism has metastacized into a “that’s YOUR problem” mentality.
This is why I’m more than pleasantly surprised when anyone who is doing something like this is approached (even deferentially)and DOESN’T respond with some “step off” comeback.
I suspect there’s a correlated increase of passive/aggressivism as a predictable response, manifested as a desire for conflict avoidance until the straw breaks the camel’s back.
Good thing we’ve also learned as Americans that the quickest/easiest way to resolve conflict is to flash that sweet, new glock.

WSresjMemberwakeflood – you’ve hit the nail on the head – all “rights” but no corresponding responsibility.

timeslidParticipantBut its just a dog, or a couple of junk cars or gas leaf blower, or construction on Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m.. Consideration is what’s lacking or as I once heard somewhere, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” or some such thing.

HomerParticipantWell put Wakeflood!!
Essentially, put yourself in the other person’s shoes and not just dismiss it as who cares, it’s not bothering me. I found there are three areas that you can’t talk to people about in life: Religion, politics, and cats (dogs). The holier than thou and I’m right, your wrong mentality shows 99% of the time.

WSresjMemberHomer, but at least its fun to argue about religion and politics – not so much about the four-leggers.

JoBParticipantif a knock on the door or a note in the mailbox doesn’t work..i believe there is some place you can report them.

fc43ParticipantAnd for goodness’ sake, people, a nice day doesn’t mean you need to burn stuff. I have asthma and I feel your smoke even before I can smell it. On a muggy day like today all this smoke is just going to sit in my house as I hardly get any breeze in it.

etohick616Memberone more, well said wakeflood!

JoBParticipantthere is a neighbor kid.. a young woman.. who gets delivered home nearly every night about 2 AM…
it is irrelevant whether her ride rolls the windows down or not.. his stereo system shakes my bedroom windows…
yet.. she arrives home safely.
i asked my neighbor to ask him to turn it down.. and he did.. but down is a relative term.
on those nights where his stereo wakes me i try to remind myself that a young woman has arrived safely home…
and in the long run that is what matters most.

JTBParticipantPolitely letting the neighbor know their animals are creating a nuisance may do little to resolve the situation but is a necessary first step. The simplest method for the owner would be to leave a television on when they are away in hopes the sounds would make the animals less anxious. A more direct, highly effective method is a bark collar. In any case, the issue is more with the owner than the animals.

JTBParticipantfc43 I’m sorry you have to deal with asthma. As a former pulmonary technologist, I’m familiar with how challenging that can be. It sounds as though you are very sensitive and tuned into some of the things that are troublesome. However, I am perplexed that you think you can “feel” smoke in the air before you can smell it. In order for smoke to penetrate into your upper airway and trigger a reaction, it would first have to pass through your smelling sensors which are pretty keen. I suspect the extremely high pollen count and big change in barometric pressure a few days ago may have combined to aggravate your condition. Even if that’s so, by the time you’re smelling smoke, it’s apt to be yet one more irritant and likely make things worse. Not knowing anything about your living quarters, I’m wondering how much smoke could enter it when you say there is not enough breeze to evacuate it. But opening a window on the downwind side of the house and turning on a small fan would be a good way to compensate for lack of natural air movement. I assume you have a good pulmonologist and or allergist to help manage your condition. In my experience, even very skilled general practitioners or internists simply don’t have the training and experience to stay on top of this rapidly evolving field to the same degree those specialists can do. Best of luck in managing your condition.

ScaryB4CoffeeMemberBack to the dogs – my neighbors that have large dogs are very considerate of their barking. It’s the one with the small dog that will allow it to bark, even when they are in the yard with it. They are very nice people. They just think I don’t like the dog. I’ve asked what command I could use to tell it to stop, and they’ve simply told me they don’t have one. I posted this because I’m hoping to spread some awareness of the impact it has on neighbors that are relatively quiet. I would be nice if we could all be more considerate. Myself included.

wakefloodParticipantWarning: tangential comment follows.
I read someplace recently (maybe a thread here?) that police suggest that a barking dog is a very good/best deterrent to house burglars.
Wonder when those internet video camera companies are going to add “real barking dog noise” to their systems when they’re tripped by motion?
We return you yet again to the dog conundrum. ;-)

HomerParticipantSorry ScaryB4Coffee…glad you’re spreading the awareness….don’t forget about when people let their cats roam free and scratch up other people’s gardens and poop in their planting areas too!
May 16, 2014 at 7:23 pm #808384
schwaggyParticipantI came to hijack this thread to say that this thread is seriously hijacked.
May 16, 2014 at 7:36 pm #808385
wakefloodParticipantYeah, but who’s on second???
May 16, 2014 at 7:40 pm #808386
sam-cParticipantcan I hijack the thread too, please? the kids at the house behind us and down a few are outside playing all the time now that the weather is nice. screaming for about 2-3 hours. ok, so the sounds doesn’t bother me (too much). but my kids says… “how come they can stay outside and play until 9 pm when I have to go to bed at 8?” :)
luckily he buys the ‘some families have different bedtimes and they may not have to get up the same time you do.’
but to further hijack… the other night- (3 am- 5 am Monday morning actually) some truck within hearing range was doing something where they were backing up every couple of minutes…. beep, beep, beep, beep. I know sound carries funny at night with different weather conditions and it could have been down the other side of the hill near duwamish or something but damn, was that annoying..

JoBParticipanti don’t mind so much that the neighborhood cats scratch and poop in my flowerbeds.. but i wish they would stop taunting the dogs
it’s hard on fences

Ms. SparklesParticipantI have 3 dogs, one of whom is part hound- his bark is deep and loud and carries. He’s never left outside when we’re not home & I bring him in when he barks. I wish the owner of the black cat that taunts him by slowly skirting our house would show the same consideration.
