Ok… Someone explain to me what the difference between a local sales and a State sales tax is? Here’s my breakdown of the taxes for my plan. Is this excessive or the norm? You can do the math. I feel I’m getting hosed.

    Mylast billing;

    Federal Universal Service Fund: 0.94

    State Sales Tax: 3.22

    City Utility Users Tax; 2.62

    Local Sales Tax: 1.49

    State 911: 0.20

    County 911: 0.50

Perhaps this web page will help.

Local usually means a city-imposed tax. Not sure what the City Utility Users Tax would mean though. Who is your provider? I work for AT&T, and if that’s who it is, I know some folks in the billing dept that might be able to explain.

Would it be the difference between what the state base tax rate and the cities rate?

Ooh, this is a pertinent topic for me. I’ve been trying to figure out how much I can expect to pay for cell phone taxes when I switch my account from my home state to here.

I’m switching to AT&T, does anyone know how much the total taxes are? Thanks!

Here’s the break down… The only difference between the carriers are the surcharges (Admin. Fee and/or Regulatory Program Fee)

Federal Universal Service Fund: Rate based pass through from the carrier to the customer. Carrier required to pay into fund for the provisioning of rural telco. services, etc.

    State Sales Tax: 6.5%

City Utility Users Tax: Seattle @ 6% (actually 6.383% because the tax itself is also taxable)

Local Sales Tax: Seattle @ 2.9% plus Regional Transportation Authority @ 0.1%

    State 911: self-explanatory

County 911: self-explanatory (but specific to wireless)

    My carrier is T-Mobile.

Made a mistake. The state 911 fee, not the county fee, is specific to wireless.

We’re all getting hosed by the taxes imposed on our cell phone service. Estimates range around 20% (cumulative).
