wakefloodParticipantSo, I witnessed something funny about a week ago and thought it was a one-off but apparently my big tabby Ruben has an ongoing battle with a male Anna’s hummingbird.
For the second time in a week, I watched them do a lean in/fall back, face-to-face dance on the porch no more than two feet apart. And the hummingbird appeared to be the instigator both times.
Ruben was sitting on the steps staring out into the yard and the bird would swoop down to right in front of his face and dart in toward him – almost but not quite paw-length away. Ruben would take a half-hearted swipe knowing full well the bird was both just a bit too far away and quick enough to dodge any potential hit – and the bird would slide back a foot.
A few seconds would pass and they’d repeat the sequence, with Ruben getting more agitated each time until after about 3 or 4 of these moves, the bird flew off – presumably to tell his buddies how he messes with this big cat.
I know these little guys get full of attitude with each other but I didn’t realize that they’ll take on just about anything, apparently?
Anyone else have that or something similar happen??

sharktankMemberFunny. Both my cats(mancoon tabbies ) experienced this same action from a group of 4-5 birds but only two got really close. They effed with my cats for about 3 mintes

PangolinPieParticipantOh yeah, I was just yesterday watching one taunt my cat. I keep an eye on her when she’s outside so that she doesn’t go after birds, but those hummingbirds are so fast that she has no chance. I watched one scoot all around her with not a care at all. It was entertaining.

wakefloodParticipantYeah, I was cracking up at how pissed Ruben was getting. Although, the second time, he didn’t take many swipes having figured out the game.

anonymeParticipantI’ve had hummers do that to me while I was working outside. One got so close I thought he was going to poke me in the eye with his needle-like bill. Reminds me of an expletive my BF from the Bronx used to use…won’t repeat it here!

IrukandjiParticipantI’ve seen them try this with the pugs when they’re sitting on the porch. The pugs bow down.

wakefloodParticipantHummingbird as Travis Bickle. “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me??”
I’ve had one bitch me out something crazy when I moved the hose I was holding in the air that he was drinking out of. Just clicking up a storm buzzing my head.
Hey anon – we’re all hoping you give us the quote. You can use as many $#@*&’s as you need. :-)

CMParticipantFunny. My LARGE black lab mix has a white tip on his tail. Many times I see him cluelessly wandering around the back yard with a hummingbird or two tracking his wagging tail tip about a foot away. Wish I could get video.

wakefloodParticipantCM, I can totally see that. You gotta’ get that on video somehow.
