just an fyi to dog owners…had to take my greyhound in to the vet yesterday and he mentioned that giardia is a major issue right now in our area. he has stated that about 25% of the dogs they treat have been affected this year. primarily from sharing water at dog parks. it’s a pretty nasty parasite and spreads quickly. it can be treated with medication. symptoms to look for are lethargy, nausea, runny stools and even blood in them. i just thought i would let the readers know to be aware. it made for a $200 visit to the vet and a very uncomfortable pet.

    here’s a link i found with some info. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/giardia.html

fwiw, Safe-Guard dewormer is the same thing as Panacur (Fenbendazole), which is commonly prescribed for giardia. I know Safe-Guard is available at PetSmart; not sure if it’s available at PetCo or not. The dosage-by-weight on the box is accurate, but the boxes are only a 3-day treatment so you’ll need to buy several. Stick with your vet’s recommendation on length of treatment; my vet was conservative and recommended a 15 day treatment. Believe me, the Safe-Guard is much cheaper than prescription Panacur!
