charlabobParticipantThis is great news (and the first person who uses the word “pork” or “earmark” will incur The Wrath of Charla.) :-)
Seriously, it was the only decision that makes sense–both technically and economically. (And, yeah, I read extensive summaries of both proposals — that’s the kind of geeky nerd I am.)
Congrats, funkie (and all the rest of you — including my many neighbors on 47th Ave who are associated with Boeing.)
Now, if they use American(tm) labor to fulfill this contract, it may actually get built and fly.

F16CrewChiefMemberThis is great and needed news for our region. But we (Boeing) got lots of work ahead of us.

RarelyEverParticipantnot to rain on anyone’s parade, but – is this the FINAL final word? are we sure this isn’t going to change again?

hooper1961Membergenesee hill – the point is maybe no contract at all should have been awarded!

Genesee HillParticipantHooper:
I know what you meant and I apologize for my sarcastic comment. I have mixed feelings about this kind of spending as well.

AlkiKmacParticipant@RarelyEver – I thought the same thing. Is the the final final? A month or two ago, several insiders were convinced Boeing was not getting the contract, so this was surprising news.

DPMemberFrom Boeing’s promotional Web site:
Tankers are critical to the U.S. armed forces, extending the range of fighters, bombers and other aircraft by transferring fuel to them in flight. The NewGen Tanker combines the latest, most advanced technology with the proven Boeing 767 commercial airplane.

I have decidedly mixed feelings about the tanker deal. On the one hand, it will provide American workers with well-paid jobs and will theoretically make us safer as a nation. On the other hand, it will help keep the nasty old military-industrial complex humming right along.
Of course, as a peace activist, I have mixed feelings about Boeing in general. They design and build great civilian aircraft, and I’ve flown on quite a few of them in my day. Never crashed yet.
Unfortunately, Boeing also makes weapons systems that kill and hurt thousands of innocent people every year, in places like Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Palestine. That is morally wrong.
I would feel a whole lot better about this deal if we were talking about a multi-billion dollar contract to build schools, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. I’d bet you dollars to donuts that there’d be a bigger jobs “payload” too.
Unfortunately, our government still labors under the delusion that war solves more problems than it creates. Most of us ordinary folks know better, but as long as our livelihood is on the line, we’re willing to hold our tongues.
And that, my friends, is why bad things keep happening to good people.
Peace out.

grrParticipantI have honest mixed feelings about this. One one hand, DUH..of course this should go to an AMERICAN company. Why ship the jobs overseas? This OBVIOULSY should be done in the USA!!
-on the flip side..if only ONE American co. is capable of doing the work, isn’t that a monopoly?
-just to toss some popcorn on the fire…on the flip side of THAT..where the hell are all the STOP THE SPENDING Republicans on this?? Is the Defense Budget NOT open to negotiation? Why can’t they build 20 LESS of these planes and use that money to pay for things like, say…teachers, schools and police??
discuss :)
February 25, 2011 at 7:28 pm #718545
West Seattle Art AttackMemberThey can’t build “20 less of these things” because the current contract that was just awarded is only for 4 planes with the potential for more at a later date.
February 25, 2011 at 7:37 pm #718546
grrParticipantwow..those are some spendy planes :)
