oddrealityParticipantCar ready for 120,000 mile service and needs a few things done. Where is the best, most reliable, place in WS to go?

grrParticipantI’ve always found Tom’s Automotive behind Alki Lumber to be fairly priced and especially professional.

MousePotatoMemberWe discovered Dere Automotive (35th and Barton) almost by accident about 10 years ago. We were in a desperate situation with my wife’s car not starting and they were able to take us on short notice with a very fast turnaround. They spent some time working on it and found if I remember correctly) a loose cable and fixed it. When I asked how much we owed they said “don’t worry about it.” They saved us AND fixed it for free. We’ve been back many times and they are ALWAYS very reasonably priced and we have had other situations where they simply did not charge us. Very friendly, excellent service and always available no matter how busy they seem. I’ve dealt with many shifty mechanics over the years that seem to tack on supposed fixes that we absolutely needed though never saw symptoms regarding the ‘repairs’ we so desperately needed. I highly recommend Dere Auto; especially for an older car with many miles on it. Sadly, when we upgraded to a newer car (Land Rover Discovery) a few years back they admittedly did not have the capacity to do any serious work on it since they did not have the computers necessary for that car. At least they were honest about it and recommended we go to a dealer for some situations. Great shop…..

oddrealityParticipantAny other suggestions? I have called a few places and Toms was 3 times higher than anyone else!! No can do….Not sure what to do. Need to get the timing belt done at least and ASAP. HELP… auto mechanics scare me!

JayDeeParticipantHave your tried “Harrah’s Automotive” in the Admiral District, just north of Blockbuster? Granted my old Trooper is ancient (and while it has a computer, a “Tickle Me Elmo” is brighter than one in the Trooper). I felt the guys at Harrah’s were honest mechanics, but I’ve never had a timing chain done there, just brakes.

girltraceyMemberAs a single girl who worried about dishonest auto mechanics I spent a lot of time researching the best mechanic to care for my car. I choose Westside Imports on Alaska. I take my 160,000+ miles Toyota to them for everything. 932-0200.

shadowpilotMemberI have taken my small truck to Westside Imports (they work on domestic cars too) several times with great results and reasonable prices.

DunnoParticipantBeen very happy with Ty’s auto repair on Delridge.
Sent all my friends and family there for best price and great results. Been kinda busy lately
but will save you $$$$.

B-squaredParticipantI still opt for Alki Auto. The guy that i always talk to (Ridge) is honest (i am a single female also and this is important.) And they are always very accommodating. i have a subaru and they seem comfortable with it. Since you know exactly what you need done, you can find a few recommendations on the blog then call around. but don’t be surprised if they all don’t find more things that “need” to be fixed. at the 120,000 mark, there is usually a laundry list of things that need to get serviced.
Many years ago i had Westside auto on Alaska do an oil change on my celica. imagine my surprise when i got home and found oil seeping through my grill. oops! forgot to put that oil cap back. nice. should have steam cleaned the engine comparment after that since there was oil everywere, but they didn’t. got to enjoy that smell for a good, long time. they also fixed an oil pan leak with some squirty crap gasket maker stuff instead of using a proper gasket. that didn’t last long. never been back after that much fun.
Harrah’s seemed very expensive to me but it was also some years ago. The guy was nice and seemed very honest though. Sometimes you might pay a little more at a shop that takes care of their customers and employees alike.

MousePotatoMemberSorry oddreality…. Please disregard my lame and totally over sensitive comment… My apologies….
March 11, 2009 at 10:09 pm #659931
MrJTMemberMousePotato – Your apology is an excellent example of how to fix a “bad”. Something we don’t see a lot of these days. Thanks for just being courteous.

MousePotatoMemberThanks… I’ve made a serious note to self; Never blog in a bad mood…. :-)

JoBParticipantI just took my 12,000 mi car to the chevron on 35th and Holden or so.. across from the Mars Hill Church. i really like the mechanic there.. he likes keeping cars running and they gave me great service at a good price.
March 12, 2009 at 3:45 pm #659935
DunnoParticipantJoB,
The Chevron is the place at 35th and Holden, been
owned by the same family, Hegge I believe?
I go there for great tire work and brakes.
The best thing to do is take these suggestions and shop em. For major work, Ty’s on Delrige
delivered a price 1/3 of several others, and also
backed up the work. Very happy with them, just a little busy for the smaller stuff like oil, tires, brakes. 763-4066.
My mom used to get raked over the coals at place
no longer in biz in WS, but she went there by habit.
Thanks to everyone for your favorites!! Networking works. WS Blog is very cool.

JoBParticipantdunno…
it’s possible i might have gotten the work done cheaper.. i don’t know.. they were competitive when i called around pricing a new fuel pump… but i wouldn’t have had so much peace of mind leaving my car with an open work order while i went on vacation…
i told him to give me a new fuel pump.. it had been going out for a year.. and to check the car over because i had decided to keep it and wanted to be safe and drive it for a long time. There were several small things out…
she was sick before and she purrs now… my spark plugs had never been changed and he bloodied knuckles getting them out rather than risk breaking them off…
sometimes it comes down to trust.. and i trust them.

zaogardeningParticipantGood service, good prices.
I had some problems with a vehicle, and it took some expensive troubleshooting and backtracking to finally nail down the problem. They didn’t charge me for a lot of work that seemed appropriate at the time but later turned out not to be the issue – super fair and easy to work with. I have 4 work trucks and my wife’s car there too, always great service.

KatherineLParticipantLet me add my recommendation for Westside Import Repair. They’ve taken care of my car for 19 years and it’s still running. Now and then I’ve asked them to do something, but they’ll say, “I’ll do it if you want, but it really doesn’t need it.” I’ve heard other people say the same.

PugHugsMemberRidge is now at Tom’s. Three long term people recently left Alki Auto and started their own shop on 35th at the old Swedish Building – West Seattle Autoworks is the name – give them a call

VanessaParticipantWe love Doyle’s Automotive near the Y. 935-2600 Been going there for many years and recommended many people. Fair price and always explains what’s up.I trust them… Foreign & domestic cars.
