Well here’s one “conservative” movement that has even Skeeter scratching his head a bit. Apparently some folks protest Obama and environmental regulations by modifying their diesel pickup trucks to spew toxic chemicals in the air we breathe and water we drink.

I’m not convinced this activity will be coming to the Emerald City anytime soon. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry? Part of me wants to laugh at the ridiculous behavior. Part of me wants to cry that the irresponsible behavior of a few can offset the efforts of thousands who are doing everything we can to minimize our impact on the environment.

Skeets, if you ever wonder why some of us Progressives get heated or can’t take a joke or can’t let some things roll off our backs, you’ve just highlighted the reason – for me, at least.

It makes me wonder whether anything can offset the sheer stupidity and hubris we humans suffer from – even if it resides in a distinct minority. The damage they do has erased our margin for error and I look around and see this and other things and vacillate between anger and despair.

These people don’t want to be educated, they enjoy their comforting, self-reinforcing ignorance.

The more I learn about our supposedly intelligent species, the more I’m convinced we’re doomed to destroy ourselves and this little miracle of blue we’ve lucked into.

Skeets, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you may have conservative financial/economic leanings but I gotta’ believe your open mind and intelligence is telling you that the “conservative” political brand is anything but.

It’s radical and is killing us as a society and we’re going to take the planet down with us.

We have the opportunity to be a beacon of forward-thinking and creating a future our grandkids would be proud of. And instead, we’re going to hand off a desperate mess. And all for the sake of a few rich men who’s primary driving forces are greed, narcissism and hate.

If I’m wrong, please correct me. I don’t know how to look at the scenario and parse it differently.

And while I’m beating this dead horse, I thought I’d offer this thought on Randian “Objectivism” as a functional ideology.

I’m open to an explanation that can convincingly extract greed, narcissism, and indeed hate from any formal or informal execution of Objectivism as a functional ruling paradigm. Can you?

I can’t see it. And if those elements are inextricable from the ideology, then I can’t see how it could possibly benefit the whole of society? If ones suggests that it isn’t SUPPOSED to benefit all, then we can at least agree that Objectivism is simply a way to create a permanent Oligarchy and permanent desperation for the masses.

Society managed by emotionally-stunted children. Now there’s an aspiration…

Wake, sorry for my lack of response. I’ve been on the phone with every auto mechanic in West Seattle asking if they can make my Subaru shoot out tons of black soot. I wanna join the protest. I’m sick and tired of being able to breathe (relatively) clean air.

Seriously, I’m pretty sure I have little in common with these folks who “protest” clean air. I can even prove it. Last night I was at the market garden buying some local veggies and the WSB was taking pics. You can see me here: https://westseattleblog.com/2014/07/happening-now-first-week-for-high-point-market-garden-farm-stand/ Look close – I’m the guy in the safety vest on a bicycle with my daughter on the back of my bike. My bike gets me all around these days – work, childcare, store, etc. I often don’t even turn the car on for days at a time. Please don’t think that just because I didn’t vote for Obama that I support these ignorant clowns who take perverse joy in polluting our world.

    I’m afraid you are right.

Hey Skeets, you KNOW that I know you’re doing your best to be part of the solution. It’s obvious from your posts. I’m sorry if I implied otherwise.

I was just bemoaning those that have so little compassion for our heirs and such tiny dreams for our future.

Remember when this society dreamed? Remember when we thought about doing great things for the culture and our way of life?

Instead, we’ve been as a kid with a box of matches skipping through a forest, scratching them into flame and randomly tossing them one after another, as we nervously giggle at the pending mayhem in our wake…

It’s in the Puget Sound area, I’ve been smoked out by someone while driving my Fit. It was horrifying and disgusting.

Well, THAT’S reassuring, trickycoolj. Good gawd.

Although I guess it’s to be expected. I’ve heard some pretty crazy stuff come out of people’s mouths around here so some of them are likely to act on their neurosis/psychosis.

Okay I did a little more research on this Rolling Coal fad. It’s really quite troubling. Some coal drivers seek out Prius cars and bicycle riders and intentionally “smoke out” the victims. It’s really messed up and terribly dangerous. If you have a few minutes to waste, some of the quotes in this video would be amusing if they were not so troubling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09BZ6ikBZ54

trickycoolj I agree that’s messed up. Sorry it happened to you and I am glad you didn’t get in a crash because of it.

I only recently became aware of this “fad” myself, like in the past few weeks. Don’t remember from exactly where, perhaps in one of the “Activist” e-mails I regularly receive.

Anyhoo, for those on Facebook, the Anti-Rollin’ comments are……entertaining:

Little nervous for the STP this weekend, drivers of big pickups are not particularly patient when 650 cyclists per hour roll through rural towns. Had a couple nerve wracking close passes on the highway between Spanaway and Roy behind JBLM last year. :(

tricky we’ll be with you in spirit. We’re doing the “mini” STP ride from Seattle St to Portland St in West Seattle. Should be a really fun ride.

stupid is as stupid does. These are the same folks who support fracking, despite emerging evidence that a recent spate of earthquakes in OK was likely caused by … you guessed it.

skeeter — I like your version of the STP, even if you voted for Mittens.

Definitely saw a coal rolling equipped truck on Hwy 30 between Gobel and St Helens, OR on the STP yesterday. He wasn’t doing the big black smoke but it was being loud to scare us riders (there were 2 car lanes each direction and a wide shoulder we weren’t impeding traffic at all) and the best part was that he was hauling a farm tractor on a trailer, was just so… Fitting.

Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, I wish I had a bazooka mounted on a Nissan Leaf.

I think coal rolling would justify use, as would the random, horizontal fireworks set off by neighbors last night.

I half expected some coal rolling on the STP but I only recall one or two cars that even gave a close shave.

This is a fascinating phenomenon akin to…well I can’t write it her. Suffice to say, why one would intentionally make their vehicle less economical to operate and intentionally violat anti pollution laws deserves to get the proverbial book thrown at them.
