jack218MemberWe’re moving to West Seattle and as we’re searching for homes we’re wondering just how busy 48th Ave SW gets? Too busy for pets/small kids?
Thank you!

dobroParticipantIt is an arterial street and people often drive way too fast on it. If you have outdoor pets or kids who don’t stick to the yard you might think twice about it IMHO.

ZenguyParticipantI have never thought of it as being busy, but I guess that depends on your definition. Seems more residential to me. Spend a half hour there during a busy time to get an idea…maybe like 6:00pm.

KBearParticipantIt also depends on which block. The entire length of 48th is not arterial.

jissyParticipantjack — I moved my family onto 48th, along the arterial about 3 years ago. It is busy and yes, people drive way too fast (I’m thinking of 2 Porsche owners in particular!!!!!)
I was a cat person, but have purposefully chosen NOT to have a cat while living in this house b/c of the arterials…. I know most people recommend to keep cats indoors and while I see the wisdom in that, I prefer to allow them to roam the outdoors as well and used to live on a greenbelt which supported that.
One of the more surprising things for us has been the road noise on this street. You sort of just get used to it after awhile, but it is a busline as well. We love the area and it’s proximity to Lincoln Park and Ercolini, but it does have its drawbacks.

bsmommaParticipantWhat part of 48th is an arterial? I’ve lived on 2 different ends of 48th and for the life of me I cannot figure out where the arterial is?

dobroParticipantas you come down edmunds from california it curves into 48th. from there down to the north end of lincoln park its an arterial and a bus route.

squareeyesParticipantI live on 48th between Findlay & Juneau and I love my location (and my neighbors!). It is a busy road and cars really get moving on my stretch – particularly late at night. Other than the late-night speeders I no longer ‘hear’ the road noise and that’s with my bedroom and living room on the road side of the house. A few cars have lost their side mirrors over the years – it pays to pull the side mirror in if you’re parking on the street.
As for children and pets – I don’t see many children playing out front unless their front yard is fenced; I think most play in their backyards. While I would love to let my cats out, I keep ’em in the house. Several of my neighbors do have cats they allow to roam, but it seems like most of the stupid/unlucky cats have long since been hit. I haven’t seen or had to move a carcass in probably 6-7 years, but there had been a string of about five cats right in front of my house over a 2-year period before that.
It’s walking distance to both the Alaska and Morgan Junctions and Lincoln Park so very conveniently located. As long as you aren’t hyper-sensitive to road noise I’d say go for it.

Leah PParticipantI don’t think of it as a majorly busy road, although a bus does run down it. I would just make sure the back yard is fenced off from the front yard. There are some really charming houses in that area close to Seaview. Good luck!

jack218MemberThhs been really helpful. It looks like the consensus is to aim for a fence, and not let this street stop us. Very much looking forward to making WS home!
