Junction Merchant’s Sidewalk Sale. Because the streets weren’t closed and it was a battle to get down the sidewalk.

Still called the HiYu parade to me. Northwest Art and Frame still gets called HiYu art store.

Official, formal names vs popular names that stick are interesting.

I think you guys are joking but it isn’t the Hi-Yu Parade, for anyone new in town who pops by here and gets confused. You can certainly call something whatever you want, and I can appreciate the sentimentality, but if people are searching for information on the Hi-Yu Parade … they’ll be lost.

It’s been the West Seattle Grand Parade for a looong time. Hi-Yu does not organize it (though their float is always an entry in it); West Seattle American Legion Post 160 did for quite some time, but now it’s a production of the Rotary Foundation. (Yes, we know it WAS the Hi-Yu Parade for like forever. I’m just mentioning this for new arrivals’ sake.)

Just came back from this year’s lineup meeting and will have lots of *West Seattle Grand Parade* previews throughout the week. See you there! – TR

I am with Mike and Me on 28th, it was hard to get past calling it the sidewalk sale, I now refer to it as the street fair and seriously didn’t notice the name changed to summer fest. I still say Hi-Yu parade too. I really am getting old! :)

1: Shocking! Say it ain’t so!! I thought I got here through immaculate conception!!

    2: Actually, I AM a boomer.

    3: Yup.

4: Who said I was “worrying”? Just stating the facts. BTW, climate is (or rather, was) something that we absolutely could have, and should have, controlled. Weather, no. Climate, yes. It’s now well past the point that a few Hail Mary’s can fix, and denial won’t save anyone.

Hello, West Seattle. My lovely wife and I have just arrived in Seattle from Kansas City. Sadly, the houses we were going to tour this weekend have all been gobbled up by other renters. This means that she and I and our lovely pups are stuck in a crummy motel by the airport (yuck!) until we can find a place. The first thing we did when we arrived was head to West Seattle to look for ‘For Rent’ signs, but my wife’s exhaustion from the drive here coupled with the gobs of people enjoying a Friday night out on the town made it quite difficult. We aren’t particularly picky, but do need some sort of yard or outdoor space for our rescues. We are absolutely desperate for a place, not just for ourselves but for our dogs as well. We’re good people, in our 30’s, former home owners, respectful of others and, here’s the sexy part, have EXCELLENT credit. Anything you can offer in terms of suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact either of us at francke13@gmail.com or lmfg3@hotmail.com. Thank you in advance and we can’t wait to hear from you.

    Yup.

Did you notice the number of fires that were deliberately caused by individuals throwing lit fireworks from cars into tinder-dry brush?

Our celebration of ‘freedom’ is beginning to seem less like Independence Day and more like ISIS.

I was told that it is actually “honeydew” from the aphids in the trees but whatever it is, it’s VERY sticky and an annual event in the summer going back at least 25 years that I’m aware of. I have a very clear memory of my windshield from parking under those trees when I lived on California Ave in 1992. It is also the reason the concrete under those trees is darker. If you stand under one of those trees you can feel the “mist”. Yuck.

Yes, it’s the trees. Sometimes my shoes will even stick to it! Yuck! I don’t know why they planted those trees but I think they aren’t allowed to plant them anymore. They have a list of approved trees now and I don’t think they are on them for that reason. Or I could be wrong.

Seattle Parks – which backed the ill-advised Go Ape zipline in Lincoln Park a few years ago – could be on the brink of another terrible idea.

They are now proposing the Supplemental Use Guidelines, which if approved would open up our protected natural areas to be developed for “unspecified new uses.”

The vast majority Seattle’s parklands have already been developed for active recreation, sports, or other uses. Only about 1 or 2% of Seattle’s total acreage is park natural area. It should remain preserved for passive, low-impact use only, and for wildlife habitat.

Nature is a dwindling, precious resource, and access to it must be fair to all people. Walking in nature is the top-rated activity (78%) in our parks. The few remaining natural areas should remain fairly allotted to the widest, and most inclusive user-group, not parceled out to specialized-user groups.

If you’d like to learn more, check out the link below and write to Mayor Murray and the Parks Department.

Remember the Go Ape Zipline debacle? Fortunately, West Seattle spoke out loud and clear against it, and the Parks Department withdrew this ill-advised proposal.

Now the department has drafted a new policy that would open our natural areas and greenspaces to unspecified “new uses.” Hmmm….. What’s wrong with keeping natural areas natural? We need them now, more than ever.

    Thank you.

Tried Ripple Cafe (35th & Henderson) last night and it was great! We got the turkey pesto sandwich and the roasted pork with caramelized onions (OMG). They were both out of this world. The owner roasts her own pork and makes her own delicious home-style potato salad. Definitely a worthy addition to the neighborhood and a welcome rotation to our take out options – give it a try!

Checked out my old neighborhood Safeway visiting friends in Greenlake last night. Found tons of flavors from Arrowhead, Canada Dry, Refreshe, and Dasani has even gotten in the seltzer game. Not a huge fan of Refreshe, I’ve bought it in the past but it has pretty big bubbles and often tastes like canned California tap water (yuk). I guess I’ve been spoiled by all the nice ones I drink visiting family in Germany. Geroldsteiner is fantastic post workouts or hang over :)

I agree that the parking lot is nasty dirty.

But my biggest complaint about this store is that the picture girl remembers all the pictures we print there. As in “more wedding photos, didn’t you already get married last summer?” (had two ceremonies)

    Yup. Creepy.
