I watched a heavy set man (with a female companion) walking through our neighborhood last week. He went to our neighbors door across the street and was yelling something about, “Does my presence make you uncomfortable?” through their front door (they wouldn’t open).
I then heard him say that he would come back when the man of the house was home (how he would know when that is, I have no idea) and left.
What was interesting to me was that they only went to that one house. They saw me, I’m pretty sure, on my porch (had to have heard my barking dog), but never came to talk to me.
Weird.
With all the rants lately I wanted to post a quick RAVE to all the wonderful, careful, and considerate drivers I’ve encountered during the past week in the Highland Park/West Crest area. I’ve been riding my horse through the neighborhood to the park, and have been gradually getting her used to the traffic/neighborhood. I’ve encountered the kindest and most considerate drivers who have slowed down and gone out of their way to make her feel safe. I’ve also come across great dog owners recently who are quick to grab their dogs. Thank you all so much!
Where on Alki did the POTUSA perform? That one certainly wasn’t on our radar … we try to track live music but we’re terminally unhip so if it’s not the usual suspects (Skylark, Easy Street, etc.) we miss it … TR
Karl – thanks for checking in – but we don’t leave until this weekend. I’ll post an update with some feedback/reflections when we return:)
P.S. – We’ve settled on the farthest camp from the entrance at Kintla Lake that’s only accessible by a narrow one lane road (i.e. no RV’s, trailers or boats – only tents), so we’re very psyched! Definitely will be in grizzly territory but have brought bells and whistles!
Wonder how Shihtzu’s trip was recently?
And where I come from: God speed and traveling mercies.
I can’t confirm that they were designed by FLW, but I can vouch that the one by the wading pool smells worse than any bathroom I’ve ever been in. If they were designed by him, the city should be ashamed by how dirty they are. I won’t complain as much about the locker room at Colman after the wading pool restroom. Disgusting.
Flowerpetal: Thanks much for the recipe. I’m leaving on a 1 week trip tomorrow AM, but will try the recipe as soon as I get back.

Sorry for the delay: I install wells as part of my day job, and you should try “United Pipe and Supply” in the yellow pages.
They have multiple locations and offer clean and sorted sand in different size gradations. If I was you, I would mix two types of sand, maybe 10/20 mixed with 20/40 (though I’d encourage you to see what these sizes are–10/20 is pretty coarse, no mud pies. 20/40 is finer, and could be nice by itself.
BTW, I agree that the sand sold by hardware stores as playground sand is fairly “dirty”. United Pipe is open 8 AM to 5 PM and the sand is available in 98-pound sacks (2 cubic feet?) each (7.48 gallons per cubic foot). The price was $7-$8 last time I checked 4 years ago…
My two cents.
TR, what’s fwiw? These abbreviations make me whacky (or whackier!)
I mentioned one on 16 ave sw. no it is not near many shops but has HUGE backyard. I lived there for 3 years with 2 80lbs dogs. Most places won’t even look at you with a dog. I know the landlords and are pretty easy going.
Has a GREAT view of the olympics. w/d AND Full bath. has a deck. 2 bedrooms, about 850 sq feet.

the rent inclueds electricity, water, sewage. the rent is around $1200.00.
Actually, my comment was just a comment. I feel very fortunate to live here (except when there is viaduct trouble.) I’m amazed that people think it is too far to come here (except on a sunny day, everyone seems to find Alki.) Maybe we need to give them better food at our parties and they will come? If we feed them, they will come… (and maybe come back since they will soon realize what they have been missing coming all the way over here!) A side note, as a bus rider, it does amaze me how freaked out people get when they miss the last stop downtown. You’d think they were in Timbukto!
quimbyd- please email me at vanmatrejennifer@gmail.com
think I might have a great lead for you. it’s not listed yet, though. opens up in September.
thanks!
Are you talking about the semi-buried ones by the beach? I believe they were built around 1970, while FLW died in 1959.
great review…but…there are wonderful desserts, too, and not mentioned. Gotta try the one called simply “Chocolate”…absolute heaven…
I’m thinking these are not if I’m remembering the insides correctly. FLW added as a feature to public bathrooms in larger buildings the “hung wall” which did not reach to the floor and therefor made it easier for cleaning purposes (and for a certain Senator from Idaho to toe tap).
The bathrooms at the beach at Lincoln Park don’t have hung walls.
He didn’t earn any points up this way, and seems he and friend(s) left our neighborhood and headed right to yours. Frustrating, eh?
It would be cool if they were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. All I am able to confirm is they smell way bad!!!!! Don’t go in there unless you have a sugical mask doused with lilac or something
At the risk of sounding completely gullible . . . a while back a long term resident of Alki told me that the restrooms at Lincoln Park were the only public restrooms designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I haven’t been able to finding anything published to support this, but thought I would throw it out to the West Seattle community. Anyone heard of such a thing or was I just the victim of someone’s tall tales?
Yesterday evening a heavyset gentleman came to our door soliciting something he never had the chance to talk about (we no longer do business at the door, but invite solicitors to leave their information for consideration).
He had no information about his visit or employer to leave with us and no badge that we could see. As he left we asked about a solicitor’s license. He became upset claiming to have been working at this for 10 years, tried to develop the inquiry into a race issue, yelled a bit from across the street then began to leave the neighborhood. As he did he was ranting about the community blog and that he is not “the one you’re looking for.”
Once around the corner I heard him talking loudly with what sounded like a young woman, though I did not see the companion. We asked police to come through because of the combined concerns in the area (37th & Admiral) of both casing and soliciting without license.
The best links are toward the end of this specific report we wrote after one of the periodic citywide forums to provide information about co-existing with coyotes and other wildlife.
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=5623
(Another one was held earlier this month; it conflicted with four community meetings the same night in WS, so we didn’t make it over to Beacon Hill, but the information is somewhat timeless.)
Even more than Lincoln Park, we have heard from nearby residents that Fauntleroy Park (which is less developed than L-Park) is particularly coyote-laden these days.

Hi – it’s OK to post a link but copyrighted material CANNOT be reposted. This link is included in a compendium of notes I just put on the home page, fwiw – however, I am going to have to take out the text. Same standard applies to when other sites quote us – a link is fine but text is not, as it is copyrighted. – TR
beachdrivegirl! EXACTLY! The guy whining about West Seattle being too far away to come to us works in the International District and most often he drives there from North Seattle (Northgate-ish) every single day! It isn’t that much further, and we only ask that he comes to us 1 time out of 10. BAH!
And yeah, I have taken cabs here from a number of places in the city and I don’t know if I’ve ever spent more than $25-30.
This place will pay you a quarter per pound if you have a bunch:

This article has some decent general info about disposable camera recycling and suggests that you may be able to take them to a photo processing shop (but might want to call first, as not all shops care to bother with recycling said items):

And a decent overall area recycling resource despite not addressing disposable cameras:

Does anyone know where, oh where, in West Seattle one can have sensitive documents shredded? Over the years I have accumulated a large stack of credit card and bank statements that I would like to safely rid of. I have a personal shredder at home but it would take a very long time to shred this amount of documents – page by page (not to mention the stress on the machine). Thanks for your help!
